Book Synopsis The Effects of Immediate and Delayed Feedback Following Correct Or Incorrect Responses on the Long Term Retention of Paired Associate Learning by : Abby Costello
Download or read book The Effects of Immediate and Delayed Feedback Following Correct Or Incorrect Responses on the Long Term Retention of Paired Associate Learning written by Abby Costello and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current research investigated the effect of feedback on the retention of paired associate vocabulary items after a delay that would be long enough to be relevant to the retention of comparable material in the real world. Participants learned twenty-six Swahili-English paired associates. Following three training trials, participants were given a recall test in which each Swahili word was presented, and participants typed the corresponding English word. One group of participants received feedback that was presented immediately following their initial responses and another group received feedback after a delay period. The final group did not receive any feedback. Then participants returned and took a second recall test after two days had passed. Results indicated that there was no significant interaction between feedback condition and the correctness of initial test responses. However, subsequent analysis indicated that when participants received immediate feedback following correct responses, recall was better than it was without feedback. Additionally, when participants received either immediate or delayed feedback following incorrect responses, they had a higher percentage correct on the final recall test than the no feedback group.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Learning and Cognitive Processes (Volume 4) by : William Estes
Download or read book Handbook of Learning and Cognitive Processes (Volume 4) written by William Estes and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-06-20 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976, this is Volume 4 of a series that reflected the current state of the field at the time. In this title the focus shifts to modern developments in cognitive psychology. The emphasis is primarily on attention and short-term memory, as these concepts came to be understood in the decade leading up to publication. In addition to presenting the major concepts, the authors outline fundamental theories and methods, all in a way that will be readable by anyone with a reasonable scientific background. As the editor notes in the Foreword, each author "has taken on the assignment of giving explicit attention to the orienting attitudes and long-term goals that tend to shape the overall course of research in his field and to bring out both actual and potential influences and implications with respect to other aspects of the discipline." This volume, as all volumes of the Handbook, will be invaluable for those who want an organized picture of the current state of the field as it was at the time.
Book Synopsis Imagery and Verbal Processes by : A. Paivio
Download or read book Imagery and Verbal Processes written by A. Paivio and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978. In this book the author has attempted to present a systematic theoretical and factual account of the role of higher mental processes in human learning and memory, and certain aspects of the psychology of perception and language. The major orienting theme of the book is its dual emphasis on nonverbal imagery and verbal processes (inner speech) as memory codes and mediators of behavior. Based on recent experimental evidence, the conceptual approach in a sense represents an integration of pre-behavioristic and behavioristic views concerning the nature of thought. The book is intended both as a textbook and as a theoretical monograph.
Book Synopsis Foundations of Human Memory by : Michael Jacob Kahana
Download or read book Foundations of Human Memory written by Michael Jacob Kahana and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Human Memory provides an introduction to the scientific study of human memory with an emphasis on both the major theories of memory and the laboratory studies that have been used to test those theories and inspire their further development. Written with the undergraduate student in mind, the text assumes no specific background in the subject, but a general familiarity with scientific method and quantitative approaches to the treatment of data. Foundations of human memory is organized around the major empirical paradigms used to study memory in the laboratory and the theories used to explain data obtained using those paradigms. The text begins with a focus on memory for individual items, building up to memory for associations between items, and finally to memory for entire sequences of items and the problem of memory search. Several major theories of memory are considered in detail, including strength theory, summed-similarity theory, neural network based theories, retrieved-context theory, and theories based on the division of memory into separate short-term and long-term storage systems. The text emphasizes basic research over applied problems, but brings in real-world examples and neuroscientific evidence as appropriate.
