Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to measure the muzzle blast overpressures upon a simulated AH-1S Helicopter TOW Sight Unit (TSU). Different weapon configurations were fired to examine the effect of gun caliber and the presence of muzzle devices. Surface pressure distributions were measured along the line of symmetry of the TSU and were supplemented by spark shadowgraphs of the blast wave propagation. Limited data was acquired in the BRL Aerodynamics Range to measure the trajectory perturbation association with the internal gasdynamics of the muzzle devices.

Book excerpt: It has been conclusively demonstrated that aqueous foam can effect significant (greater than 10 dB) reductions in major-caliber (5'/54) gun muzzle blast peak sound pressure level; reduction of more than 15 dB was attained. Containment of the foam in a muzzle-mounted canister was investigated. This report addresses related areas of gun ballistics, interior barrel ballistics, effects on projectile velocity, and general gun operational effects.

Data are collected describing the blast overpressure in the free field and upon a surface adjacent to the cannon. Scaling relationships are demonstrated to describe both pressure pulses reasonably well. The influence of muzzle devices upon the blast and flash characteristics of the weapon is examined.

Book excerpt: Pressure measurements were recorded at the Weapons Technology Directorate (WTD) of the Army Research Laboratory to verify predictions of a blast model used at Benet Weapons Laboratory (BWL). An array of eleven piezoelectric gages was placed in a vertical line perpendicular to the gun barrel and positioned at various locations behind the muzzle during the testing of two perforated muzzle brakes. The two muzzle brakes were designed and fabricated to fit on to a 20mm Mann barrel. The two brakes were compared to a third device with no perforations that served as a baseline. The first muzzle brake was a scaled down version of the EX35 and the second was a special design that had two rows of holes relocated between 7.5 and 9 calibers behind the muzzle (split brake). The pressure gage array was used to measure the portion of the blast profile that affected the area behind the gun. This test was performed in conjunction with the first phase of the test where far field pressure measurements and blast wave shadowgraphs were obtained. This paper will present the characteristics of the blast pressure wave as it travels back along the gun axis correlating the pressure profile data with the shadowgraphs that were taken at the same locations. Results from the present blast profile test provided quantitative information for precise comparisons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muzzle devices intended for use on large guns and artillery were investigated experimentally at reduced scale (40 mm). These muzzle devices reduce gun muzzle blast overpressure behind and to the side of the gun muzzle, at the expense of increased overpressure in front of the muzzle near the line of fire and increased recoil impulse. Detailed data are presented for blast field and recoil parameters for several device shapes. Overpressure reductions behind the muzzle exceeded 50 percent, with increases in recoil impulse ranging up to 10 percent. The results are applicable to a wide variety of gun sizes and types. Book excerpt: This study was undertaken to establish the subthreshold, threshold, and suprathresholds for nonauditory injuries in a simulated muzzle blast environment like that produced when firing a 120mm M121 mortar system. A vertical axis explosively driven shock tube, in combination with reflector shields, was used to produce the required muzzle blast pressure-time pattern. Varying numbers of anesthetized sheep were subjected to 6 or 50 blasts of simulated muzzle blast waves in 1.5- to 3.0-dB increments. The results of the study demonstrated that sheep could be exposed to Pmax levels consisting of 6 blasts of 36 kPa each and 50 blasts of 30 kPa each and sustain no injuries to trivial upper respiratory tract injuries at most. Threshold injuries were calculated to occur at 53 and 34 kPa for 6- and 50-blast exposures, respectively. Suprathresholds for URT and GI tract lesions were predicted to be 69 and 46 kPa for 6 and 50 blasts each. A suprathreshold for lung hemorrhage was predicted at 277 kPa for 6 exposures. Comparative analyses of this study with previous complex wave studies demonstrated that the safe nonauditory subthreshold for as many as 100 complex blastwave exposures was 22 kPa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate modeling of near-field wave propagation is critical to determine blast wave overpressure of large caliber muzzle brakes. Experimental testing to determine blast overpressure is costly, making computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of these flow-fields a viable alternative. Techniques and specialized CFD codes are being developed in order to properly model the unsteady, very high-pressure flows of gun muzzle blast. Two CFD codes, Fluent 6.1.11 (a prerelease version of Fluent) and the Discontinuous Galerkin Code (DG) were developed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY. These codes were used to compare experimental shadowgraph data from the 7.62-mm NATO rifle G3 using a DM-41 training round for the purpose of developing CFD modeling techniques and validation of the CFD codes. Unsteady grid adaption was used with both solvers in order to reduce solution error near unsteady blast waves and shocks. It is possible to get good results from Fluent with high levels of adaption, however DG can model blast with courser grid adaption. It was also found that DG required an order-of-magnitude longer solution time than Fluent for a given number of grid elements. The 7.62-mm NATO G3 CFD precursor flow results matched experimental shadowgraph results well, however, the main propellant flow results did not match well.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of impulse noise criteria is becoming more critical as many new weapons exceed exposure levels for single hearing protection set forth by the MIL-STD-1474D. Previous man-rating studies have consistently shown that auditory injury does not occur at these levels. Consequently, there is general belief that the current standards under predict the threshold at which injury occurs. Four impulse noise auditory injury criteria adopted by NATO countries, namely, the MIL-STD-1474D (USA), Pfander (Germany), Smoorenburg (Netherlands), and L(Aeq8) (France), are evaluated against human volunteer data. Four data sets from subjects wearing single hearing protection exposed to increasing blast overpressure effects were obtained from tests sponsored by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command. Two data sets were obtained from free field and bunker tests using RACAL earmuffs modified to simulate poor fitting. Two other data sets came from the M198 howitzer and Viper man-rating studies using EAR earplugs. Injury threshold was taken as a temporary threshold shift (TTS)>/- 25 ("3 at any frequency. Using logistic regression, the four criteria were each correlated with the test data. The analysis shows that all four criteria are overly conservative by 4-12 ("3. The MIL-STD-1474D for single hearing protection is 9.9).
