Book excerpt: The majority of Dual Language Learners (DLLs) in American public schools are immigrants of Hispanic/Latino descent. Research has shown that these students face a variety of unique challenges to physical and psychological wellbeing, and that the negative effects of these challenges may be tempered by improved resilience in a multicultural educational environment. This quasi-experimental, exploratory study examined the effect of group music therapy interventions on the developing resilience of multicultural subjects. Seven elementary school students (both dual language learners and native English speakers) were individually tested on several factors of resilience as measured by the Child and Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM-26) (Ungar & Liebenberg, 2011). All subjects participated in six group music therapy sessions over the course of 11 weeks; interventions were designed to promote the development of personal skills, to increase subject perception of peer support, and to improve subjects' sense of belonging in educational and cultural contexts. Subjects were retested individually following the final session, and results indicated statistically significant increases in overall resilience for the group as a whole. Significant increases were also noted in subject perception of overall context and sense of belonging, sense of belonging in cultural contexts, and in the psychological caregiving subscale cluster. This evidence suggests that targeted group music therapy interventions may be effective for increasing overall resilience and contributing factors thereof in elementary school children of varying primary language backgrounds.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyze the contents of experimental research from 1975-2009 in the field of music therapy that involved school-aged children with varying exceptionalities. Sixty-four published and unpublished studies met criteria for inclusion and were catalogued and coded for the following characteristics: type of source, total number of participants, population, age range, research design, duration of study, presentation of music, non-musical objective, method of evaluation, intervention strategies used, and effectiveness. The content analysis revealed that 62.5% of the 64 included studies reported that music therapy was significantly effective in meeting non-musical objectives set for participants in the research studies. Almost all of these studies reported a level of significance better than .05. Another 14.3% of the studies reported that interventions were effective, but did not cite a level of significance; 6.3% were effective, though not significantly so; 3.2% reported effectiveness anecdotally, but did not offer statistical significance. Interventions that were not effective accounted for 14.3% of the total. There were no clear trends in interventions that produced significant results versus those that were found not to be effective. A wide variety of strategies were used, including background music, mood-inducing music, music as a mnemonic device or instructional tool, musical antecedents, and music used as a contingency or to facilitate structure. Musical activities included singing, playing instruments, moving to music, listening to music, songwriting, using sign language with music, and musical games. Results of this content analysis support the use of music therapy in schools to address the educational objectives of children and youth with special needs.

The purpose of this project was to investigate the benefits of music education and to design an elementary education music curriculum that addresses social skills development and the academic learning of students with diverse needs. The author investigated the positive effects of music education, the benefits of a music curriculum for special needs students and music therapy interventions. With the literature review in mind, two existing music curricula were compared and analyzed for use of the best practices. The author then created a three-week music curriculum for elementary students with mild to moderate disabilities. The music curriculum includes fifteen, thirty-minute lessons to be used in special day classes from kindergarten through third grade. Each lesson consists of an objective, standard, setting recommendations, materials required, procedures and assessment. The lessons are designed to reinforce social skills development and listening skills, increase vocabulary, motivate students, and develop fine and gross motor movements through musical activities. Further development of this curriculum could include a music curriculum that is designed to teach students from fourth grade and above.

Book excerpt: Autism Spectrum Disorder is currently recognized as a neurological disorder characterized by impairments in communication, socialization, restricted movements, and language development. The purpose of this study was to design a program that utilized song-based music therapy interventions to address language development as part of a collaboration with a speech-language pathologist for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Through the analysis of current music therapy, speech-language pathology, and psychology literature, five malleable mediators were identified as having the potential to affect language development for children with ASD: (a) to develop a safe and trusting relationship with the therapist; (b) to develop imitation skills; (c) to improve turn-taking skills; (d) to develop understanding of words using the augmentative communication tools; and (e) to increase vocalization and/or verbalization. Those malleable mediators were paired with action strategies, which were identified from the literature and from the author’s clinical experience. A weekly goal-oriented music therapy intervention program was developed to address language development with children on the ASD, consisting of approximately 16 weekly 30-minute sessions divided into eight blocks. The child would progress from one block of sessions to the next once the necessary skills had been acquired. This design with target words or phrases incorporated into songs using visual materials can be used in music therapy clinical intervention contexts and can also form the basis for further research.
