Book excerpt: Bluegills and channel catfish were exposed to four applications of malathion at two concentrations in ponds over an 11-week summer period. Fish losses ranged from 8 to 44 percent but could not be correlated to treatment levels. Neither acute nor chronic pathology developed, nor were depressions in the brain cholinesterase activity significant or reproducible. The total number of aquatic insects from plate sampling the low-treated ponds was not significantly lower than that from the untreated ponds, but the number of organisms from the high-treated ponds was significantly lower than that from either the low-treated or untreated ponds. Chironomidae was the dominant family of aquatic insects, and formed about 70 percent of the total benthos. This group showed a significant reduction in numbers in both low- and high-treated ponds after the third application of malathion.

Third world countries had to response to increasing demands for increasing population, proverty, illiteracy, poor sanitation etc together with the pollution related problems. Pesticide applied to food crop in the field can also leave potential harm ful residue. these increasing pesticide residue effect adversely on whole environment, fauna and flora Including man. The toxicological impact of organ phosphorous pesticide Malathion on the general and behavioral aspects. histopathological analysis brain tissue cf the Indian cat fish H Fossilis was investigated. After exposing the fishes in different Malathion concentrations exhibited abnormal behavioural response with various toxic symptoms as indicated by visible changes in various physiological activities, including a marked increase in respiratory activity . Therefore, pesticide monitoring and risk assessment should immediately be undertaken in North Eastern Sates of India and the banned as a agrochemical to conserve the healthy aquatic environment and to promote the natural rhythm of fish production

Book excerpt: This volume of the IARC Monographs provides evaluations of the carcinogenicity of some organophosphate insecticides and herbicides, including diazinon, glyphosate, malathion, parathion, and tetrachlorvinphos. Diazinon acts on a wide range of insects on crops, gardens, livestock, and pets, but most uses have been restricted in the USA, Canada, and the European Union since the 1980s. Glyphosate is the most heavily used agricultural and residential herbicide in the world, and has been detected in soil, air, surface water, and groundwater, as well as in food. Malathion is one of the oldest and most widely used organophosphate insecticides, and has a broad spectrum of applications in agriculture and public health, notably mosquito control. The insecticide parathion has been largely banned or restricted throughout the world due to toxicity to wildlife and humans. Tetrachlorvinphos is banned in the European Union, but continues to be used in the USA and elsewhere as an insecticide on animals, including in pet flea collars. The IARC Monographs Working Group reviewed epidemiological evidence, animal bioassays, and mechanistic and other relevant data to reach conclusions as to the carcinogenic hazard to humans of these agents.

Book excerpt: An experiment was conducted to study the effects of some selected pesticides on the mortality of tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus). We also observed water quality parameters of the experimental buckets. Six pesticides were used in this experiment. Among them three were insecticides (Malathion, Diaginon and Curatar) and three were herbicides (Amclore, Silah and Top). The pesticide Curatar had significant effect on the mortality of tilapia fish. Curatar proved to the most destructive effect on tilapia fish. It killed 1.859 out of six fingerlings. This was follwed by Diazinon, which killed 1.641 fishes. Again, Malathion followed Diazinon which also killed 1.391. After that, Silah was follwed by Malathion. Lastly Amclore (0.844) and Top (0.813) had identical toxicity in respect of killing fishes, and they killed the lowest number of fishes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pesticide should cause effect on the target pests and be selective enough to spare the non-target beneficial. The book deals with the pesticide toxicity to predators, parasitoids and microbes which are used for pest management in the agroecosystem. The other beneficials exposed to pesticides are pollinators, earthworms, silkworm and fishes. The book contains information on the modes of pesticide exposure and toxicity to the organisms, sub-lethal effects of insecticides and method of toxicity assessment, risk assessment of pesticidal application in the field. The purpose of the work is to compile and present the different procedures to assess pesticide poising in organisms related to the agroecosystem along with discussions on risk assessment procedures with clear comparison of toxicity of pesticides to target pests and non target beneficial organisms.
