Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION What is common between a child choosing a larger piece of a cake, a mouthwatering recipe from mother, specific forecasting of tomorrow’s weather, composing a pleasant musical note, predicting the spread of a pandemic or precise launching of a space craft to another planet which is also in motion? The answer is Mathematics - the language of universal science. Without even realizing, every one of us is applying mathematics in our daily life- from playing a game, solving sudoku, estimating time to destination, telling time from shadows, solving Rubik cubes to generating OTPs. Nature manifests itself in mathematical patterns – the number of petals in flowers, the geometry of honeycombs, the spirals of nautilus shells or starry galaxies, pattern on a tiger’s or zebra’s stripes, the list is endless. Popular authors like Norton Juster, Martin Gardner and Ian Stewart have written wonderful books to dispel the fear of mathematics and to popularize and render understanding mathematics an enjoyable experience.

Book excerpt: In this study, it is aimed to determination of the relationship between learning styles and TIMSS mathematics achievements of eighth grade students. Correlational research design that is one of the quantitative research methods, was used in this study. The sample of the research consists of 652 8th grade students 347 are male and 305 are female and the students continue their education in 11 different middle schools in the centre of Bayburt in Turkey. In the research, two data collection tools were used. The first tool is Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire (PLSPQ) that was developed by Reid (1987) and translated by Bengi ̇(2008) into Turkish. The second tool is 45-questions achievement test that selected from TIMSS 2011 mathematics questions according to experts' opinions. Frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, ANOVA and correlation analysis were applied through SPSS for data analysis. The most dominant learning style of the students is auditory and the second one is kinaesthetic learning style. Students' general TIMSS scores vary between 11 and 94 and the average TIMSS achievement score is 43.38. Additionally, it was seen that there is no significant relationship between TIMSS mathematics achievement and learning styles.

Book excerpt: "Having taught middle school mathematics for more than 20 years, I truly believe this is an awesome math methods book for middle school teachers. This research-based book fully documents the different learning styles and demonstrates tangible strategies that meet the NCTM process standards. Each chapter includes best practices, defines various strategies, and provides variations and extensions. Each strategy is explained in detail with actual practice problems and great discussion." —Edna F. Bazik, Mathematics Education Program Coordinator National-Louis University Make mathematics instruction more effective by engaging learners of all styles! One key to raising achievement in mathematics is to recognize that all students have preferred styles of thinking and learning. By rotating teaching strategies, you can reach learners through their preferred styles, as well as challenge students to think in other styles. Styles and Strategies for Teaching Middle School Mathematics provides a set of powerful, research-based strategies to help middle school teachers differentiate mathematics instruction and assessment according to their students′ learning styles. Presenting four distinct mathematical learning styles—Mastery, Understanding, Self-Expressive, and Interpersonal—this book offers classroom-tested instructional strategies that can be mixed and matched to reach all learners. Compatible with any curriculum or textbook, the book: Explains how the strategies address NCTM process standards and students′ learning styles Includes step-by-step directions, examples, and planning considerations for each strategy Provides reproducible forms for implementing the strategies Offers variations and ways to adapt each strategy to meet a variety of instructional demands With assessment components woven throughout, this invaluable guide helps middle school mathematics teachers effectively reach and teach today′s learners.

Book excerpt: Use of learning strategies has been found to be one of the most important predictors of academic achievement, which makes the assessment of learning strategy use crucial. The first purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties (i.e., reliability and validity) of the learning strategies domain of the GOALS-S (Dowson & McInerney, 2004) with 8th grade students. The learning strategies domain of the GOALS-S items assess students' use of cognitive and metacognitive learning strategies. This study also examined the relationship between self-efficacy for self-regulated learning, learning strategy use, and math achievement. The data were collected from 399 eight grade students near the end of 2018-2019 academic year. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to evaluate the psychometrics properties of the GOALS-S. Following the CFA, the relationship between self-efficacy for self-regulated learning, learning strategy use, and math achievement was examined by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results obtained from this study provided evidence for validity and reliability of the learning strategies domain of the GOALS-S. The data supported the hypothesized six-factor model with minor modifications. The results of the structural model indicated that learning strategy use had a direct impact on mathematics achievement. Also, self-efficacy for self-regulated had direct effect on mathematics achievement, as well as indirect effect on mathematics achievement mediated by learning strategy use. Discussion of the findings, implications for teachers, policy makers, and researchers, and limitations and future directions are presented.

Book excerpt: Eighth-grade students who are placed into Algebra 1 but fail end-of-course exams may experience lowered grade point averages (GPAs) and loss of motivation for math or avoid taking advanced mathematics courses in high school. Middle-achieving students present challenges in terms of mathematics placement. Self-efficacy theory and locus of control theory suggest the noncognitive traits mathematics self-efficacy (MSE) and academic locus of control (ALOC) are associated with mathematics achievement and could predict achievement in eighth-grade algebra. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine whether MSE, ALOC, and prior-year State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) mathematics score predict achievement in eighth-grade algebra among middle-achieving students in South Texas more accurately than prior-year STAAR mathematics scores alone. The sample included 111 eighth-grade algebra students in a large suburban school district in South Texas, whose scores on the previous year's STAAR mathematics exam fell between the 25th and 75th percentiles. MSE predicted meeting grade-level standards (R 2 = .229), performance category (R 2 = .327), and percent score on the NEISD Algebra 1 Benchmark exam (R 2 = .317). ALOC was not associated with achievement on the NEISD Algebra 1 Benchmark exam. These results suggest that predictions of achievement in eighth-grade algebra for middle-achieving students were improved with the addition of measures of MSE, but not ALOC. Suggestions for future research include developing a mathematics locus of control instrument and broader studies exploring the relationship between MSE and achievement in eighth-grade Algebra 1.

Book excerpt: This case study of a rural West Tennessee school district examines the relationship of the learning styles of middle school students and the learning and teaching styles of middle school teachers and the effects on student achievement. With the use of the Index of Learning Style Survey (ILS), the Paragon Learning Style Inventory (PLSI), and the Survey of Teaching Styles Questionnaire, 577 students and 30 teachers were surveyed to explore if there is a relationship between the learning and teaching styles of teachers, as well as determining if students' learning styles impact their achievement. The study finds that there is a significant relationship among 1) teachers' learning styles and students' learning styles; and 2) teachers' teaching styles and students learning styles. Results show that there is no significant relationship between student achievement and students' learning or between students' achievement score and the teaching and learning styles of teachers. Seventh grade English was the only time a significant difference was found in student achievement when teachers had different styles of learning.
