Book excerpt: Fatigue crack initiation can be affected by surface phenomena and the possibility exists for improving the fatigue performance by altering the state of the surface without greatly changing bulk properties. This program was initiated on 1 March 1978, with the objective of determining the effect of ion implantation and ion plating on the cyclic stress-strain response and fatigue crack nucleation of a metal substrate. To meet this objective, we have selected surface film-substrate combinations designed to separate the various parameters, e.g., crystal structure, SFE, shear modulus, misfit, residual stress, etc., which control near surface deformation and associated crack initiation. This report summarizes our progress during the period 1 March 1979 - 29 February 1980. Three aspects of the program are discussed: (1) The effect of silver and nickel ion plating on the low and high cycle fatigue behavior of polycrystalline copper, (2) x-ray diffraction analysis of ion implanted crystals, and (3) the effect of aluminum-ion implantation on the fatigue crack initiation of polycrystalline copper. Book excerpt: A number of materials, copper, aluminum, titanium and steel, have been examined for microstructural evolution, deformation and fatigue behavior in the ion implanted, as - implanted and implanted + annealed conditions. A wide variety of implant species that produce residual compressive stresses, residual tensile stresses or cause precipitation have been chosen to examine the above effects. The main goal has, however, been to choose implant species that would enhance deformation and fatigue resistance through a modification in the surface microstructure and/or by providing residual compressive stresses. In instances where no major changes in the surface microstructure are observed it appears that surface dislocation sources either become inoperative or become operative on a larger number of slip planes, limiting the size of the slip steps that would nucleate fracture. In materials where major changes in the microstructure are observed, slip is dispersed, also resulting in fine slip that enhances resistance. Ion implantation is being used to modify surface-related mechanical properties such as friction and wear, fatigue, corrosion and recently, near surface deformation at high temperatures.

Book Synopsis The Effects of Ion Implantation on Friction and Wear of Metals by : Nam P. Suh
Download or read book The Effects of Ion Implantation on Friction and Wear of Metals written by Nam P. Suh and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of ion implantation on the friction and wear behavior of metals was investigated. Experiments were conducted with iron, titanium, and copper implanted with nitrogen ions, iron implanted with aluminum ions, and copper implanted with zinc ions. The significant reduction in friction and wear of the iron and titanium systems is attributed to a hard layer formed during the ion implantation process. This hard layer minimizes plowing and subsurface deformation and hence reduces the delamination wear process, i.e. crack nucleation, crack propagation, and the formation of delamination wear sheets. A finite element model of an elastic semi-infinite solid under the contact of a stationary rigid asperity showed that the hard layer does not change the subsurface stress distribution by supporting the load, but rather that this thin layer decreases the plowing component of friction. The model predicts that this decrease in the friction coefficient in turn, substantially reduces subsurface deformation and thus wear. The implanted copper specimens which did not appear to have a hard surface layer showed little improvement in their tribological behavior over the unimplanted copper.
