Book excerpt: Spatial disorientation (SD) accidents are a major contributor to the Class A mishap rate in the US Air Force. A recent investigation showed that transitions between visual meteorological conditions (VMC), when pilots use real-world visual cues to fly, to instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), when pilots have to use instruments to fly, were a leading cause of SD. In VMC, the true horizon is the primary visual cue pilots use to orient themselves. In IMC, pilots must rely on a representation of the horizon as their primary visual cue to maintain spatial orientation. Research has shown that when pilots fly in VMC, they tilt their heads in the direction opposite that of aircraft roll in an effort to keep the horizon fixed in their visual field. This implies that pilots use a world frame of reference for determining orientation. However, pilots do not tilt their heads in IMC when viewing the horizon symbol on a head-down, aircraft-referenced attitude indicator. Because pilots must transition between these two frames of reference when transitioning between VMC and IMC, this may be causing SD. The helmet-mounted display (HMD) is currently being tested as a means of displaying attitude information. The HMD symbology tested portrays a conformal horizon symbol which overlays the true horizon. In VMC, pilots see the true horizon and the conformal horizon symbol simultaneously. In IMC, pilots see only the horizon symbol. It was hypothesized that pilots would tilt their heads in VMC and in IMC (due to the fact that the conformal horizon represents the true horizon). Eleven pilot-subjects completed a VMC and an IMC flight task. Results showed no practical head tilt in either task. This was attributed to the nature of the task. Task demands determine the visual information to which pilots attend. This attention narrowing may influence the strength of the OKCR.

Book excerpt: For over sixty years, researchers and engineers have based investigations and the design of cockpit displays and structures upon the presupposition that, during flight, the pilot maintains a head alignment coincident with the aircraft's vertical axis (Z-axis). Recent flight simulator studies have verified the existence of a pilot neck reflex which refutes this long-standing assumption. This reflex, named the optokinetic cervical reflex (OKCR), occurs during visual flight and is theorized to be an attempt by the pilot to stabilize a retinal image of the horizon to maintain spatial orientation. As a result, pilots view a fixer-horizon image and not a moving-horizon. The objectives of the research were to determine if the optokinetic cervical reflex occurs during actual flight of high performance jet aircraft and to model the response. This was an observational study in which the head positions of nine pilots were recorded during actual F-15 aircraft flight and analyzed. Results indicate that the OKCR caused pilots to tilt their heads during aircraft bank. Also, the reflex was found to be independent of the bank phase: entering versus exiting the turn. The OKCR was shown to be a strong, natural response and the flight results correlated extremely well with the simulator results. The impact of these results on pilot training, spatial disorientation, physiological injury and safety, and the re-design of displays for aircraft attitude and virtual reality are discussed.

A major benefit of this is that the pilots will be able to take this information with them when they look off-boresight. However, when looking off-boresight, the question arises as to what is the best orientation, or frame of reference, for attitude symbology against the horizon (i.e., forward or line-of-sight) in order to maximize interpretation and performance. This study tested five different symbologies (standard HUD, visually coupled acquisition and targeting symbology, arc segmented attitude reference, theta ball, and non-distributed flight reference) of which three have both forward and line-of-sight orientations. The experiment consisted of two distributed tasks, with the pilots performing either facing the monitor or rotated 90 degrees and looking over their shoulder (off-boresight). In the first task, pilots maintained straight and level flight with simulated turbulence. The second task had pilots interpret a static representation of their attitude and respond via a key press, and then the display went live and they had to fly to a new commanded attitude. This second task was similar to a recovery from unusual attitude methodology, except the end state was never straight and level. Instead, a second unknown end-state attitude was commanded by the experiment. Results indicate that performance is letter when the symbology is forward as opposed to line-of-sight referenced. Further, performance was best in both tasks for the non-distributed flight reference. We discuss these results in terms of implications for helmet-mounted display symbology design.

The mission included four tasks, which allowed variation in the frequency of alerts. Book excerpt: The current research utilized configural displays within the domain of aviation to assess what design features of configural displays contribute to the formation of operator situation awareness (SA). Configural displays map system information relevant to operator goals onto geometric shapes called emergent features. An emergent feature is formed from the combination of individual line segments to produce a global feature more perceptually salient and recognized sooner than the individual parts themselves. Configural displays have been shown in previous research to provide better operator performance for integration tasks where multiple pieces of information must be considered at once, yet the design aspects of configural displays that impact the formation of operator SA have yet to be determined. The current research compared the design features of three aviation configural displays over four experiments to quantify what aspects of configural displays would impact operator SA. The research sought to determine whether the simple act of representing system information in configural displays using emergent features is sufficient for facilitating operator SA or do other design factors need to be considered? Operator SA was assessed using explicit and implicit measures of SA from operator task performance in addition to a subjective SA rating scale. The recognition of aircraft attitude (climb/dive flight angles) when briefly presented to pilots in Experiment 1 revealed significant performance differences for the Arc Segment Attitude Reference (ASAR) configural display which mapped aircraft attitude information onto a circular shape versus the traditional aircraft head-up display (HUD) ladder found in the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) HUD and Dual-Articulated (DA) HUD. The current research in Experiment 1 provides evidence that configural displays such as the ASAR that utilize emergent features well mapped to fully relate the information needed for a task will facilitate pilot Level 1 SA (i.e., perception of information) for integration tasks. The performance results for the dynamic aircraft control task in Experiment 2 were inconclusive as performance differences between the three configural displays approached significance, but did not reach significance. Experiment 2 investigated design differences of configural displays impacting operator SA beyond perception, that is, once information extraction has taken place, how does the pilot utilize the information to build and develop Level 2 and Level 3 SA? Given the brief duration of the task from Experiment 2, it’s recommended that the benefits of configural displays for higher-order SA be investigated in a more complex and extended task that would allow SA to be developed over time and possibly sampled more extensively than the task used in Experiment 2 that lasted from 1-2 seconds for the performance measures used. Experiments 3 and 4 compared operator SA for using the same three configural displays as used in Experiments 1 and 2 but for switching between attitude displays during task completion. The findings from Experiment 3 show that when using a configural display off-axis in a helmet-mounted display (HMD) that allows for aircraft attitude to be readily perceived and understood (i.e., the prevailing format from Experiment 1), the transition forward to the primary flight display (i.e., forward configural display) poses little impact on either pilot (expert) or flight test engineer (FTE, novice) ability to transition between the two displays and still control the aircraft. The results from Experiment 4 showed that experts and novices both choose to rely upon aircraft instruments for obtaining orientation cues and aircraft attitude state when using a HMD off-axis, but how expert and novice aircraft operators utilize flight instruments and real world visual cues off-axis in a HMD during extending off-axis viewing still needs to be examined. An application of the design recommendations for configural displays thought to benefit SA formation for operators is provided as a basis for how to design configural displays to provide for all three levels of SA. The results from the current research support the converging evidence that the critical distinction in providing system information to operators with configural displays lies in the degree to which the mapping of system information onto emergent features corresponds to operator goals, and extends existing configural display research by providing insight into the configural display design features that impact operator SA formation when using a single configural display, and for the first time, the transitioning from one configural display to another during completion of an integration task. The current research also contributed to the theory of SA by examining the use of configural displays to provide a design approach to assist operators in developing and maintaining SA. The theory of SA provides a framework for what must take place for SA to be established and developed (i.e., information should be highly salient and related to operator goals), but SA theory does not provide a specific means by which this can be achieved. For the current research, configural displays were provided as a means for providing a design approach that would inherently provide for information saliency (i.e., emergent features), comprehension of task goals (display mapped to system information relevant to task), and the ability to predict system states when emergent features changed over time to express emerging critical conditions in the system.

The Air Force Research Laboratory's (AFRL's) Helmet-Mounted Sight Plus (HMS+) program seeks to provide further enhancement by enabling the presentation of multi-color symbology and sensor imagery. To take proper advantage of color-capable HMDs, systematic evaluations must be conducted to identify the best color-coding techniques. The experiment described here is the second we have conducted to address this need. The first experiment identified the better of two competing color coding strategies for air-to-air weapons symbology and indicated that pilots preferred the color codes over an otherwise equivalent monochrome baseline. The present experiment compared the "winning" color code to the monochrome baseline during trials of a complex multi-player air-to-air weapon delivery scenario. Twelve fighter pilots representing three different countries (U.S., U.K., and Sweden) flew simulator trials that included target identification, intercept, attack, missile launch, and defensive maneuvering tasks. Participants subjective feedback and performance data indicated a preference for color coded symbology.
