Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the career development experiences of students with disabilities who participated in a unique collaborative program consisting of three university entities: Disabilities Services, Career Services, and the College of Education, as well as community-based service agency, the state vocational rehabilitation agency in the State of Michigan. Guided by the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and through semi-structured interviews with 12 participants, half alumni and half current students, this researcher collected information about how the Careers Collaborative services had assisted with the participants' career preparation and development, particularly in terms of their interaction with professional staff, how their personal and learning experiences impacted decisions related to their field of study, what role disability had in their decisions, and the supports and barriers perceived by the participants. For each of the six SCCT constructs, themes emerged that were described as follows. Construct 1 Self-Efficacy and themes: Soft Skills Attainment, Positive Outlook on Future Employment, Barriers and Supports, Educational and Professional Past Experiences. Construct 2 Learning Experiences and themes: Previous Academic Experiences, Work Experiences and Exploration, Personal Experiences, Impact of Others. Construct 3 Person Inputs and themes: Personality Characteristics, Effects of Disability, Educational Factors Influencing Career Path, Accommodations and Support Services in Higher Education. Construct 4 Outcome Expectations and themes: Participant's Employment Outlook, Future Plans are Guided by Expectations, Personal Fit of Job, Preparing for Potential Challenges. Construct 5 Interests and themes: Past Experiences, Personal Values, Passion, Autonomy. Construct 6 Personal/Choice Goals and themes: Continued Education or Training, Gain Experience, Active Engagement with Partners in the Careers Collaborative, Value-Driven Decision. The results of this study showed promising and positive outcomes of participants who received a program that supported and provided both academic and career-related services for college students with disabilities. It demonstrated that professionals of different specialties who work collaboratively are likely to maximize the outcomes. Implications for practice, future research, and education will be discussed.

Book excerpt: While a college degree typically expands career options for students with learning disabilities, degree attainment does not necessarily ensure students a smooth transition from college to employment (Aune & Kroeger, 1997; Gerber, 1997). An essential college service, the career development center, is uniquely positioned to ameliorate this transition (Hitchings & Retish, 2000). This study explored the practices employed by career development center directors in nine degree-granting institutions in a New England state in addressing the career development needs of students with learning disabilities and disability issues that affect career placement. The study was guided by three major research questions regarding practices employed by career centers in addressing the unique needs of college students with learning disabilities, disability issues that affected career placement, and recommendations of participants for serving these students. ^ Interview data were analyzed qualitatively for common patterns and themes. The major findings indicated that the selected career development centers employed no specific practices for serving students with learning disabilities; nor were formal approaches utilized for addressing the impact of learning disabilities on career placement. All directors offered reflections regarding how the centers might assist students with career issues related to learning disabilities. ^ Based on findings and the literature, actionable recommendations were developed for use by college career development center directors and higher education leaders in addressing the unique career development needs of college students with learning disabilities. Recommendations include the provision of professional development in federal disability laws, learning disabilities, and disability-related career issues, the strengthening of collaboration and referral processes with the disability support services office, and the use of multiple modalities and formats in the implementation of career services and communications.

Book excerpt: It is common knowledge that employment is a large part of participation in society for all adults; and, one role of public education is to prepare students for these adult roles. Despite increasing school accountability measures for post-school outcomes of students with disabilities, a significant gap in employment between those with and those without disabilities remains. Work experience during high school has been established as the most consistent predictor of post-school employment. The problem is the lack of intervention research demonstrating ways of implementing programs that are associated with acquisition of work-readiness skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of structured work experience on the work-readiness skills of students with disabilities, and examine whether or not disability, or type of program, affected student outcomes while controlling for number of participant contact hours. To accomplish this purpose, a quasi- experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was selected and used. The target population for this study was high school students with disabilities in three high schools in Texas. The final sample included 37 students. The Becker Work Adjustment Profile: 2 was the instrument used to measure the participants' work-readiness skills. The pretest was administered within two weeks of student entry into the program. The posttest was administered within two weeks of student exit from the program. Descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted to answer the primary and exploratory research questions. Inferential analyses included a dependent sample t test and an ANCOVA using number of participant contact hours as the covariate. Results indicated participation in a structured work experience program had a positive effect on the work-readiness skills of these participants. ANCOVA results indicated (a) disability type was not a significant factor affecting the work-readiness of the participants, (b) program type produced a statistically significant main effect, (c) there was no statistically significant interaction effect between disability type and program type, and (d) number of contact hours produced a statistically significant main effect. Future research studies should focus on replication of the current study results and examination of the long-term effects of participation in structured work experience programs on post-school outcomes. Book excerpt: Individuals seeking career counseling often present with a complex array of issues, and thus it is often difficult for counselors to separate career satisfaction and development from other mental health issues. Career, Work, and Mental Health examines this tightly woven connection between mental health issues and career development and offers practical ways for counselors to blend career and personal counseling. Taking this integrative approach, author Vernon Zunker offers step-by-step procedures for delivering effective intervention strategies – tactics that are meaningful and relevant to career choice, career development, and the interconnectedness of personal problems.
