Book excerpt: The field dependency and independency cognitive style affects the academic performance of students. It has been generally accepted that the needs of field dependent students could be accommodated in learning environments. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of two instructional support features (model transparency and feedback) on the performance of field dependent and field independent students in a Web-based simulation environment. In this study, there were two treatment groups. One group, consisting of 14 participants, received a black-box simulation (no model transparency) with no feedback (black-box + no feedback), and another group, consisting of 8 participants, received a glass-box simulation (with model transparency) with feedback feature (glass-box + feedback). The model transparency was provided in text-only format. The feedback was diagnostic and immediate. To assess the participantsʹ cognitive style, the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) was implemented. The participantsʹ achievements were evaluated with a performance assessment method that showed the near-transfer skills. The results of this study revealed that the simulation performance was similar for both the participants interacting with the glass-box simulation with feedback feature and the participants interacting with the black-box simulation with no feedback feature. There was no statistically significant correlation between participants' degree of field independency (GEFT scores) and their simulation performance. Finally, there was no interaction between the treatments and the cognitive style of participants. Significant performance differences were reported in the literature for field dependent and field independent students in learning environments. The results of this study were contradictory to the literature review. Directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Selected as an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Magazine, January 2010 From the depressed and lonely college student to the business executive at midlife experiencing decreasing levels of career satisfaction to the couple where one partner has been unfaithful in the relationship, counselling is the intervention that numerous individuals turn to each year as the challenges and stress of daily living exceed their normal coping abilities. Counselling is practised by counsellors, social workers, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, and psychiatrists. Counseling is to be differentiated from psychotherapy in that the latter deals more with mental illnesses and psychological disorders while the former is more concerned with normative stresses, adjustment difficulties, and life transitions (e.g., adjusting to unemployment or going through a divorce). The Encyclopedia of Counseling will be the definitive resource for members of the public who are interested in learning about the science and practice of counselling. It will also be a useful resource for undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals from other specialties. Covering all of the major theories, approaches, and contemporary issues in counselling, the set includes over 600 entries. The Encyclopedia will consist of four volumes: (a) changes and challenges facing counseling, (b) personal counseling for mental health problems, (c) career counseling, and (d) cross-cultural counseling. Each volume is organized alphabetically and will contain a comprehensive index and cross-referencing system to entries in other volumes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been in the making since my days at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, in the Faculty of Education. I had always wanted to produce a book that is small and easy enough to read and yet succinct to meet the needs of the undergraduate or graduate students in Education who are preparing for their sessional exams! The book has undergone considerable revisions to meet that target goal. In part these revisions have been necessitated by the geometric increase in our knowledge of general psychology, as well as science, in the last two decades. This is to say nothing of the psychology of learning. The increase in our knowledge- base has further been doubled by the new technology of the Internet. Some have even argued that, the availability of the Internet has rendered the publishing of such books redundant. However, I'm convinced that books would continue to play a central role in our lives for the foreseeable future. I had wanted to include most of the material that psychologists subsume under the heading of learning. I have tried to include important topics as well as new developments in the field that I believe an undergraduate student will find useful. Also included are "cultural Implications", which are applications of the general topic in a classroom setting in the relevant culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about using the Internet as a teaching tool. It starts with the psychology of the learner and looks at how best to fit technology to the student, rather than the other way around. The authors include leading authorities in many areas of psychology, and the book takes a broad look at learners as people. Thus, it includes a wide range of materials from how the eye "reads" moving graphs on a Web page to how people who have never met face-to-face can interact on the Internet and create "communities" of learners. The book considers many Internet technologies, but focuses on the World Wide Web and new "hybrid" technologies that integrate the Web with other communications technologies. This book is essential to researchers is psychology and education who are interested in learning. It is also used in college and graduate courses in departments of psychology and educational psychology. Teachers and trainers at any level who are using technology in their teaching (or thinking about it) find this book very useful. Key Features * Distinguished authors with considerable expertise in their fields * Broad "intra-disciplinary" perspective on learning and teaching on the Web * Focus on the Web and emerging Web-based technologies * Special attention to conducting educational research on-line * Emphasis on the Social and Psychological Context * Analyses of effective Web-based learning resources * Firmly grounded in contemporary psychological research and theory
