Book Synopsis The Effect of Experimenter Bias on Handling and Performance of the Albino Rat by : Dennis B. Sprague

This book was released on 1971 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty naive male Holtzman albino rats served as subjects and twenty psychology students served as experimenters in an investigation to determine if experimenter bias leads to differential handling of the albino rat, and whether or not differential handling effects the performance of a rat running a maze. Both subjects and experimenters were randomly assigned to one of four different groups (Maze-bright handled, Maze-dull handled, Maze-bright non-handled, and Maze-dull non-handled). A 2 x 2 factorial design was used in which experimenter bias and handling were the independent variables. The two dependent variables used in the experiment were lapsed time and number of wrong turns into blind alleys. The results of the experiment showed that: 1.) Experimenter bias leads to differential handling; 2.) Differential handling leads to superior performance by rats in the handled groups. It is believed that the experimenter communicated his "bias" or "expectancy" to the rat through the quality of tactile stimulation while handling the animal. The rat, in turn, responded by performing well in the maze.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years is a long time in the life of a science. While the historical roots of psychology have not changed since the first edition of this book, some of the offshoots of the various theories and systems discussed have been crit ically reexamined and have undergone far-reaching modifications. New and bold research has led to a broadening of perspectives, and recent devel opments in several areas required a considerable amount of rewriting. I have been fortunate in the last fifteen years to have worked with about 2,000 psychologists and other behavioral scientists who contributed to several collected volumes I have edited. As the editor-in-chief of the In ternational Encyclopedia of Psychiatry, Psychology, Psychoanalysis and Neurol ogy, I have had the privilege of reading, scrutinizing, and editing the work of 1,500 experts in psychology and related disciplines. In addition, I have written several books and monographs and over one hundred scientific papers. Armed with all that experience, I have carefully examined the pages of the first edition. Chapter 8 required substantial rewriting and several new sections have been added to other chapters: "Current Soviet Psychol ogy" (Chapter 2, Section 7); "New Ideas on Purposivism" (Chapter 5, Sec tion 4); "Recent Developments in the Sociological School of Psychoanalysis" (Chapter 9, Section 4); and "Present Status of Gestalt Psychology" (Chapter 12, Section 4). Chapter 15 was omitted, and two new chapters were added: Chapter 14 ("Humanistic Psychology") and Chapter 16 ("Selected Research Areas").

Download or read book Cognition written by Frank H. George and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1962, the problems of cognition dealt with in this book include learning, perception, thinking, memory and linguistic behaviour. It is not a textbook in the ordinary sense, since it presents a particular approach to the subject through experimental psychology, and also, to some extent, through philosophy, cybernetics and logic. A brief mention is made of ethological and physiological matters. It argues that cognition is a stepping-stone to integration with allied sciences. A large-scale study of the organism-as-a-whole needs to be supplemented by other biological and logical studies, but preparatory to this, cognitive psychologists must try and discover more rigorous ways of presenting their theories and models, since the mode of communicating an idea can never be wholly separated from that idea. Furthermore cognition, even at the organism-as-a-whole level, needs to broaden out and link up with social studies and studies in personality and individual difference. This book, pointed to a new direction that psychology should take; without contributing greatly to existing knowledge in the obvious sense, it suggests new methods and new ways of regarding the existing knowledge at the time.
