Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between extracurricular activities participation and disciplinary infractions caused by at-risk male adolescents. Participants for this research study were male high school adolescents who met the criteria of being at-risk for becoming high school dropouts and participate in extracurricular activities. The participants ranged in ages from 14 to 18. The extracurricular activities included participation in the following activities: football for African-American males and soccer for Hispanic males. This research study was completed at a rural high school in the southeastern portion of Alabama. Disciplinary records, free and reduced lunch records, and extracurricular activities rosters were analyzed for this study. The results of this study conclude that participation in football for African-Americans and participation in soccer for Hispanics are equally effective with respect to the number of disciplinary infractions for the two groups when comparing the number of in-season infractions and the number of out of season infractions. Although no statistical difference was observed, the researcher concluded that in-season athletic activity for both groups were beneficial, therefore one proactive approach to aid in reducing disciplinary problems in schools is encouraging students to become involve in extracurricular activities.

Book excerpt: Zero tolerance policies are commonly implemented in school districts across the United States. These policies utilize punitive consequences such as in-school and out-of-school suspensions. There is some research to suggest that these practices may be more likely to promote future misconduct and increase student risk of poor academic achievement, antisocial behavior, and dropping out of school. Despite the recent research documenting deleterious correlates of punitive consequences, inquiry about the relative benefits of varying types of consequences is sparse. Specifically, few studies have compared consequences that exclude students from instruction (e.g., suspension) versus those that are more student-centered (e.g., conferences). Student-centered approaches in particular, tend to foster student skillsets that aid in student self-management and behavior regulation. Following a sample of 9th grade students from two diverse Northeastern high schools over nine months, the current study examined whether conferences relative to exclusionary consequences, such as in-school suspension and out-of-school suspension, were linked to fewer future infractions. It was hypothesized that students who received student-centered disciplinary actions, such as restorative conferences, would receive fewer future disciplinary referrals when compared to peers who received more punitive consequences, such as in-school and out-of school suspensions. However, multiple regression analyses did not support the hypothesis. Results indicated that the type and frequency of consequence received did not significantly impact future rates of office discipline referrals, out-of-school suspension, or in-school suspension. There was, however, a noteworthy finding: when students were referred for reasons related to missing class (e.g., tardiness, unexcused absence), they tended to receive more frequent future disciplinary referrals, relative to their peers who did not receive referrals for these reasons. This suggests that missing class may be an early indicator of serious underlying challenges that contribute to the development of negative discipline trajectories in the first years of high school. Future directions and implications for practice are discussed.

Book excerpt: Adolescence is a distinct, yet transient, period of development between childhood and adulthood characterized by increased experimentation and risk-taking, a tendency to discount long-term consequences, and heightened sensitivity to peers and other social influences. A key function of adolescence is developing an integrated sense of self, including individualization, separation from parents, and personal identity. Experimentation and novelty-seeking behavior, such as alcohol and drug use, unsafe sex, and reckless driving, are thought to serve a number of adaptive functions despite their risks. Research indicates that for most youth, the period of risky experimentation does not extend beyond adolescence, ceasing as identity becomes settled with maturity. Much adolescent involvement in criminal activity is part of the normal developmental process of identity formation and most adolescents will mature out of these tendencies. Evidence of significant changes in brain structure and function during adolescence strongly suggests that these cognitive tendencies characteristic of adolescents are associated with biological immaturity of the brain and with an imbalance among developing brain systems. This imbalance model implies dual systems: one involved in cognitive and behavioral control and one involved in socio-emotional processes. Accordingly adolescents lack mature capacity for self-regulations because the brain system that influences pleasure-seeking and emotional reactivity develops more rapidly than the brain system that supports self-control. This knowledge of adolescent development has underscored important differences between adults and adolescents with direct bearing on the design and operation of the justice system, raising doubts about the core assumptions driving the criminalization of juvenile justice policy in the late decades of the 20th century. It was in this context that the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) asked the National Research Council to convene a committee to conduct a study of juvenile justice reform. The goal of Reforming Juvenile Justice: A Developmental Approach was to review recent advances in behavioral and neuroscience research and draw out the implications of this knowledge for juvenile justice reform, to assess the new generation of reform activities occurring in the United States, and to assess the performance of OJJDP in carrying out its statutory mission as well as its potential role in supporting scientifically based reform efforts.

In general, the effect of extracurricular activities on a high school student's overall experience was investigated. One hundred and one high school students provided data on their extracurricular involvement, amount of choice in life, life satisfaction, academic achievement and frequency of flow experiences. Data was gathered in person within their high school. Mediation analysis was performed examining the relationship between boredom, time spent in activities, flow experiences, choice, life satisfaction, and GPA. The results of the mediation analysis within this study did not support the researcher's hypothesis. However, multiple significant correlations amongst variables were noted and discussed in detail.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Substance use during adolescence is associated with numerous undesirable short term and long term consequences. This study examined rates of substance use, as well as rates of elevated anxiety and depressive symptomalogy, among 138 students attending a predominantly Hispanic, low-SES high school. The current study also examined the complex relationships between adolescent substance use, mental health problems, and involvement in school-based extracurricular activities, among this ethnically diverse sample. Results included that a significant proportion of adolescents in the sample fell in the "at-risk" category for a clinical diagnosis of depression and/or anxiety disorder. Further, those students who reported smoking cigarettes and using marijuana were more likely to endorse feelings/thoughts related to school avoidance. Results also indicated that the more adolescents reported being involved in prosocial/academically oriented school-based extracurricular activities and/or special interest clubs, the less likely they were to report smoking cigarettes. Finally, involvement in athletics protected students with social anxiety from using cigarettes. Implications of these findings for future research as well as practice are also discussed.
