Book excerpt: Forty-two beef cows composed of six breed-age groups were milked four times during their lactation to establish production levels, constituent percentages, and lactation trends. Fourteen additional cows of the same breed-age groups, and calving a month earlier, were milked to estimate the persistency of lactation trends. Milking was done by machine with the use of oxytocin. A 12-hour milk yield of one-half of the udder was multiplied by four for a 24-hour yield estimate. Milk was analyzed for butterfat, protein, solids-not-fat, and total solids. Calf milk consumption was measured in the first month. Breed-age group averages for 24-hour milk yield ranged from 8.2 to 18.5 pounds with a herd average of 14.2 pounds. The beef cows showed a decline in milk yield from the first to the fifth month, which is different from dairy cattle lactation trends where a rise normally occurs from the first to the second month. The difference was probably due to the effect of calf suckling. In the first month of lactation, milk production was generally in excess of the calf's capacity to consume, and there was a physiological restriction to increased production. However, in those breed-age groups where the calves were found to consume all the milk available in the first month, milk production did increase to the second month. Lactation averages for butterfat, protein, solids-not-fat, and total solids were 3.9, 3.5, 9,1, and 13.0 per cent, respectively. Butterfat increased from the beginning; very sharply toward the end. Other constituents decreased to the second month and then increased. Data from the 14 cows indicated a continuation in the rise of butterfat and total solids and a levelling-off in the rise of protein and solids-not-fat percentages. An analysis of variance showed that breed of dam contributed significantly (P

Book excerpt: As members of the public becomes more concious of the food they consume and its content, higher standards are expected in the preparation of such food. The updated seventh edition of Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle explores the impact of cattle's biological, production, and environmental diversities, as well as variations on nutrient utilization and requirements. More enhanced than previous editions, this edition expands on the descriptions of cattle and their nutritional requirements taking management and environmental conditions into consideration. The book clearly communicates the current state of beef cattle nutrient requirements and animal variation by visually presenting related data via computer-generated models. Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle expounds on the effects of beef cattle body condition on the state of compensatory growth, takes an in-depth look at the variations in cattle type, and documents the important effects of the environment and stress on food intake. This volume also uses new data on the development of a fetus during pregnancy to prescribe nutrient requirements of gestating cattle more precisely. By focusing on factors such as product quality and environmental awareness, Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle presents standards and advisements for acceptable nutrients in a complete and conventional manner that promotes a more practical understanding and application.

The major study involved 40 Hereford cows with 20 purebred (HE) and 20 crossbred (XB) calves, each group having 10 males and 10 females. The results from the second observation and from the six extra cows and calves were not used. Purebreds averaged 3.1 and crossbreds 3.4 sucklings per day in June and 3.6 and 3.8, respectively, in August. The peak nursing times were early morning, noon and late afternoon. Milk yield for the 46 cows was measured in July, August, September and October. The average 24-hour milk yield was 4.0 kg, with a range from 2.3 to 6.0 kg. The monthly average yields for dams with XB calves declined from 5.4, 4.0, 3.3 to 3.1 kg/day and those for dams with HE calves from 5.8, 4.1, 3.3 to 2.8 kg/day. The milk yield of the former was significantly (P-=cn0.01) higher in the later stages of lactation. The greater persistency of lactation of dams with XB calves was probably influenced by the higher frequency of nursing and heavier weights of their calves. The males were heavier throughout the suckling period, but only significantly (PC0.05) so at birth. The average daily gain (ADG) from birth to weaning for XB and HE calves was 0.69 and 0.65 kg respectively; the crossbreds gained consistently faster throughout the period and significantly (P

Book excerpt: Research has shown milk yield (MWT) has an important influence on calf pre-weaning ADG (PRWADG), but MWT accounts for only a moderate amount of variation in PRWADG. The objective of this study was to determine if milk fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), alone and in combination with MWT, could improve accuracy of prediction of PRWADG. Forty-five beef cows sired by Bonsmara, Brangus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford and Romosinuano bulls were used in a 2-year study. Spring-calving cows were milked 6 times per year every 28 days beginning late May, and milk samples were analyzed for milk fat and protein. Milk samples collected in May, July and September each year were analyzed for FAME. Percentages of 42 FAME in each milk sample were acquired using a gas chromatograph flame ion detector. Milk weights, quality data, and FAME were averaged over collection dates prior to analyses. Stepwise regression was used to identify linear models to predict PRWADG using MWT, age of dam (AOD), and percent FAME. The R2 and associated condition index (CI, an indicator of collinearity) were used in model evaluation. Condition indexes less than or close to 30 were considered to have low collinearity. Regression of PRWADG on MWT resulted in an R2 of 0.35 with a CI of 9.4 while inclusion of AOD gave an R2 of 0.4 and a CI of 21.6. A regression equation using 8 FAME accounted 54% of the variation in calf ADG with a CI of 33. When MWT and AOD were included with FAME as predictors, a prediction equation with 8 FAME, MWT, and AOD accounted for 69% of the variation in PRWADG with a CI of 29. Partial least squares regression (PLS) was also used to predict PRWADG from FAME, MWT, and AOD. Results from PLS analyses yielded a dependent variable R2 of 0.61 using all 42 FAME with 7 extracted factors and a dependent variable R2 of 0.78 28 when MWT and AOD were included with the 42 FAME with 7 extracted factors. Results from these preliminary analyses suggest that FAME composition of milk influences calf ADG and that data on percent FAME in combination with MWT and AOD can improve the accuracy of prediction of calf PRWADG compared to MWT and AOD alone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Factors Affecting Calf Crop summarizes the latest information available from leading cattle physiologists and geneticists regarding factors known to influence the production of live calves at weaning. You get practical information on management techniques for improving reproduction efficiency in the herd. You'll also learn about the functioning of the reproductive system and how this may affect reproductive processes in the cow herd. Managers will benefit from a clearer understanding of the factors known to limit efficient reproduction, while veterinarians and other professionals who advise cattlemen will appreciate the substantial reference material and color photographs for defining cow condition scores. Color photographs are also used to illustrate the discussions of testicular thermographies and their applications. Other chapters in the book cover developments in improving reproductive performance of the replacement heifer, the brood cow, and the bull. Topics on reproduction include physiology/endocrinology, the use of growth promotants, genetics and physiological and economic considerations in selecting the age to breed heifers, heritability of fertility, length of the breeding season, prepartum and postpartum nutrition, nursing by the calf, cloning of embryos, and much more.
