Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to compare the feedlot performance and carcass characteristics, including; body weight (BW), dry matter intake (DMI), average daily gain (ADG), gain to feed ratio (G:F), hot carcass weight (HCW), 12th rib fat, body wall thickness, longissimus muscle area (LMA), calculated % of boneless, closely trimmed retail cuts (%BCTRC), estimated boneless, closely trimmed retail cut weight (EstBCTRCwt), calculated yield grade and camera yield grade of lambs produced by the U.S. Sheep Experiment Station terminal-sire composite (TSC), SIREMAX® composite, and Suffolk breeds, when used as terminal sires mated to range-type ewes. We hypothesized that finishing performance and carcass traits will be similar among TSC-, SIREMAX®-, and Suffolk-sired lambs. Crossbred lambs were produced in 2015, 2016, and 2017 by single-sire mating of Suffolk (n = 24), SIREMAX® (n = 24), and TSC (n = 24) rams with mature (2 to 7-year–old) Targhee (n = 213), Polypay (n = 206), and Rambouillet (n = 208) ewes. After weaning, lambs of the same sire breed and sex were fed in replicated feedlot pens (n= 24). Lambs were blocked by dam breed, with approximately equal numbers of lambs by each dam breed in each pen. Within each pen and dam breed, lambs were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 slaughter groups and targeted for slaughter at mean BW of 56, 61 and 66 kg. Furthermore, periods were used to report the feedlot performance results. Period 1 includes all lambs within pen from slaughter group 1, 2, and 3; period 2 includes all lambs within pen from slaughter group 2 and 3 and period 3 includes lambs from slaughter group 3. A total of 755 lambs were harvested across 3 years. Lambs were harvested in a single commercial abattoir. Hot carcass weights (HCW) were determined, and yield grades were estimated based on image analysis of unribbed carcasses. After images were obtained and carcasses were chilled at 2 to 4°C for approximately 24 h, carcasses were ribbed and longissimus muscle area (LMA), 12th-rib fat depth, and body wall thickness were determined. The effect of sire breed was significant (P = 0.0027) for initial body weight (BW) and BW in period 1 (P

This book was released on 1982 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effects of sire breed and weight on the performance of 117 crossbred wether lambs born at the Oregon State University Agricultural Experiment Station, Corvallis. Lambs were produced by mating Clun Forest, Polypay, Dorset, Border Leicester, and Suffolk sires to Columbia-type ewes. After weaning at approximately 90 days of age (34 kg), the lambs were separated into two groups for experimentation, 1) 30 individually fed, and 2) 87 group fed lambs. Both groups were fed similar diets. Individually fed lambs were slaughtered at 57 kg live weight. Group fed lambs were randomly assigned live weights of 43, 50, and 57 kg. Average daily gain (ADG) and carcass data were collected from both groups; feed per unit of gain (F/G) was also collected from the individually fed group. Lambs produced by the five sire breeds were similar for ADG and F/G. Differences were found among sire breeds for some carcass traits: loin-eye area (P
