Book excerpt: The vibrations of a cylindrical shell with an axisymmetric initial imperfection and axial preload are studied. Small asymmetric harmonic vibrations are superposed on the basic static axisymmetric equilibrium and the frequency of these vibrations is evaluated. The analysis is based on the nonlinear equations of shallow shell theory, and follows closely an earlier stability investigation by Koiter. The study is restricted to initial imperfections similar to an axisymmetric buckling mode of a perfect cylindrical shell and represents a first approximation only. Such imperfections exhibit a strong influence on the frequency of the vibrations. The possible implications of this effect are discussed. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book excerpt: Koiter's well-known buckling analysis of cylindrical shells with periodic axisymmetric imperfections yields a solution which is valid for imperfection of different wavelengths and amplitudes. Numerical calculations were carried out to evaluate several of these cases. Of particular interest are imperfections of the wavelength which are larger than the one considered in Koiter's original analysis. In such cases, the validity of the solution may be extended to imperfection amplitudes of a much larger order of magnitude hitherto considered. The numerical results are plotted and tabulated. A rederivation of Koiter's analysis is added in an appendix together with a brief description of the computational method that was used. (Author).

Book excerpt: The influence of two types of asymmetric initial geometrical imperfections on the vibrations and buckling of axially loaded isotropic cylindrical shells is studied. The analysis is based on a solution of the Karman-Donnell nonlinear shell equations by the Galerkin method. The results indicate that the influence of the initial geometrical imperfections depends strongly on the mode of the initial imperfection and its relation to the mode of vibration. The imperfections may lower or raise the frequency. The buckling loads also depend strongly on the relation between the corresponding modes. In general, a reduction in buckling load is predicted, but in some cases the solution predicts an increase in buckling loads due to imperfections and in certain cases even large bending deformation without buckling.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the investigation described in this paper is the study of the effect of very small nonaxisymmetric initial deviations from the exact shape upon the deformations and the critical time of a thin-walled circular cylindrical shell which was manufactured with larger initial deviations of an axisymmetric type. The calculations are carried out in a manner similar to that of a recent paper by the senior author. It is assumed that all the deformations are due to nonlinear steady creep governed by Odqvist's law. In consequence of the nonlinearity of the constitutive equation and the use of three terms in the expressions for the deformations and the stresses the trigonometric calculations become so complicated that they must be carried out by means of the high-speed digital computer. For this purpose use is made of the 'REDUCE' program. It is found that in a particular case the critical time of the shell is reduced to about one-half the original value when one adds to the small axially symmetric component of the initial deviations a nonaxisymmetric component which is ten orders of magnitude smaller. The reduction in critical time is represented by a factor of about 1/15 when the amplitudes of the axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric initial deviations are equal. (Author).

Book excerpt: The first edition of this book appeared over three decades ago (Wiley-Interscience, 1983), whereas the second one saw light on the verge of new millennium (Dover, 1999). This is third, corrected and expanded edition that appears in conjunction with its companion volume .Thus, the reader is able to both get acquainted with the theoretical material and be able to master some of the problems, following Chinese dictum: I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand — Confucius. The main idea of the book lies in the fact that three topics: probabilistic strength of materials, random vibrations, and probabilistic buckling are presented in a single package allowing one to see the forest in between the trees. Indeed, these three topics usually are presented in separate manners, in different specialized books. Here, the reader gets a feeling of true unity of the subject at large in order to appreciate that in the end what one wants is reliability of the structure, in conjunction with its operating conditions. As the author describes in the Preface of the second edition, this book was not conceived ab initio, as a book that author strived to compose. Rather, it was forced, as it were, upon me due to two reasons. One was rather a surprising but understandable requirement in the venerable Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands to prepare the lecture notes for students with the view of reducing skyrocketing costs of acquisition of textbooks by the students. The other one was an unusually warm acceptance of the notes that the author prepared while at Delft University of Technology and later in Haifa, at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology by the legendary engineering scientist Warner Tjardus Koiter (1914-1997). The energy necessary to prepare the second and third editions came from enthusiastic reviews that appeared in various sources. Author embraced the simplicity of exposition as the main virtue following Isaac Newton's view that 'Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.'

Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume of the handbook Thermal Stresses. Following the principles established when the first volume was published in 1986, the fourth volume consists of six separate chapters prepared by specialists in the field. Each chapter is devoted to a different topic in the area of Thermal Stresses. Many results have been published for the first time in Thermal Stresses IV. The exposition of the material is on the state-of-the art level, which should be appropriate for graduate students, researchers, and engineers specializing in the field of stress analysis. In most cases the material is presented with some historical perspective. A large number of references provided will allow the readers to augment their knowledge, after studying a particular chapter.
