Book Synopsis Surface and Colloid Science by : R. Good
Download or read book Surface and Colloid Science written by R. Good and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface science and colloid science are preeminently experimental subjects. They constitute complementary aspects of a field which has been notably active since World War II; there is every reason to expect that the level of activity will continue to rise in the coming decades, so it is timely to review certain experimental methods of surface and colloid science as they exist, and to evaluate and refine those methods. This volume, and others that will follow, are principally concerned with experimental methods. The working scientist needs access to the latest techniques, of course. He also needs to learn of the potentialities of recently developed techniques which he may not have been aware of. Equally important, or perhaps even more so, he needs to learn of the pitfalls of existing methods. One might say, wistfully, that it would be nice to be able to pick up somebody's description of a new piece of apparatus, to go into the laboratory, to build it, and to have it work, the first time! There is, however, a serious problem of the interaction between the experiment per se and the theory for which the experiment is designed. Very often, this interaction renders problematic the interpretation of "direct" observations. An example, from experience of the senior editor of this volume, is the question of contact angle hysteresis. (See Chapters 1 and 2.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Chemical Engineering Fluid Mechanics by : William M. Deen
Download or read book Introduction to Chemical Engineering Fluid Mechanics written by William M. Deen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for introductory undergraduate courses in fluid mechanics for chemical engineers, this stand-alone textbook illustrates the fundamental concepts and analytical strategies in a rigorous and systematic, yet mathematically accessible manner. Using both traditional and novel applications, it examines key topics such as viscous stresses, surface tension, and the microscopic analysis of incompressible flows which enables students to understand what is important physically in a novel situation and how to use such insights in modeling. The many modern worked examples and end-of-chapter problems provide calculation practice, build confidence in analyzing physical systems, and help develop engineering judgment. The book also features a self-contained summary of the mathematics needed to understand vectors and tensors, and explains solution methods for partial differential equations. Including a full solutions manual for instructors available at www.cambridge.org/deen, this balanced textbook is the ideal resource for a one-semester course.

Book excerpt: "The book covers the basic techniques of reservoir engineering necessary for a professional to master. The approach consists of starting from the fundamental physical laws down to the practical applications in reservoir engineering. Emphasis is placed on assumptions and limits attached to each concept and the link between theory and field applications. The theory in this book is developed with a homogenous unit system with useful formulas expressed in practical units."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Synopsis Mechanics of Fluids by : John Ward-Smith
Download or read book Mechanics of Fluids written by John Ward-Smith and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in previous editions, this ninth edition of Massey’s Mechanics of Fluids introduces the basic principles of fluid mechanics in a detailed and clear manner. This bestselling textbook provides the sound physical understanding of fluid flow that is essential for an honours degree course in civil or mechanical engineering as well as courses in aeronautical and chemical engineering. Focusing on the engineering applications of fluid flow, rather than mathematical techniques, students are gradually introduced to the subject, with the text moving from the simple to the complex, and from the familiar to the unfamiliar. In an all-new chapter, the ninth edition closely examines the modern context of fluid mechanics, where climate change, new forms of energy generation, and fresh water conservation are pressing issues. SI units are used throughout and there are many worked examples. Though the book is essentially self-contained, where appropriate, references are given to more detailed or advanced accounts of particular topics providing a strong basis for further study. For lecturers, an accompanying solutions manual is available.

Download or read book Chemistry of Glasses written by A. Paul and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The preface ... either serves for the explanation of the purpose of the book, or for justification and as an answer to critics'. Lermontov This book is based mainly on the lectures on the Chemistry of Glasses which I gave at the University of Sheffield to the final year honours and postgraduate students of Glass Technology and Materials Science. Most books reflect the interests and enthusiasm of their authors, and the present one is no exception. The chemistry of glass is a rapidly developing field because the frontiers of advanced chemistry and advanced physics are merging together and con sequently this book will soon require considerable amplification and modification. However, my experience in teaching the chemistry of glasses for more than a decade has shown me that there is much need for a good text-book on the subject. This book is therefore intended to be a stop-gap which, until it receives that new revision. may serve as a useful reference work for students and research workers alike. I gratefully acknowledge the influence on my thinking of many of those colleagues at Sheffield with whom I have been in contact during the past twenty years or so. In addition to these personal influences, other published works have had considerable influence in modifying my approach. especially Cotton and Wilkinson's Advanced inorganic Chemistry. Dr Peter James helped me in writing Chapter 2, and Professor Peter McMillan not only read the whole manuscript but also made a number of most helpful suggestions.
