Formerly a subject of interest only to a few special ists and for which the literature was relatively smalI, the needs of structures for aerospace missions instigated a torrent of papers on all facets of the theory which also found application in the less glamorous earthbound shell struc tures important in everyday life. Some idea of the rapidity of the development can be gained from the fact that a bibliography* completed in 1953 listed some 1455 books and papers as the sum total ofthe literature on shell theory to that date. Three years later, however, a supplementt added another 884 papers to the list, an increase of 60 per cent in that short period of time. The number of papers published since these listings has increased to an extent that does not bear contemplation. Obviously no single volume could contain all that constitutes the theory of shells and so this book is restricted to that portion of the theory associated with small deformations of elastic shells. Plastic deformations of shells, which is hardly developed, and nonlinear deformations and stability, which would require at least aseparate volume, are thus excluded. Even with this restriction, however, the present volume represents a long overdue compro mise between completeness and finiteness. In making this compromise I have undoubtedly omitted discussions of many topics and references to many excellent papers which should have been included.

In the calculations about 350 shells covering a wide range of shell and stiffener geometries have been considered. It is found that for long cylinders rings are the important stiffeners, and internal rings stiffen more than external rings. For short cylinders the effect is inverted, external rings yielding higher critical loads than internal rings. Stringers have little effect in long cylinders, but in short cylinders they stiffen the shell against buckling in torsion as much as rings. Outside stringers always stiffen the shell more than inside stringers. (Author).

Book excerpt: The validity of a nondimensional curvature parameter, relating discontinuity size to shell radius and thickness, used to express the effect of curvature on stress intensification at a discontinuity in a cylindrical shell, has been substantiated within a limited range. Fatigue crack growth tests were conducted on flat and curved axially loaded specimens to examine the influence of curvature on stress intensity in cylindrical shells. Using crack growth rates, a curvature correction is obtained which can be used to apply a stress intensity analysis in flat sheets to cylinders. The influence of curvature on stress intensity is found to be similar to that of sheet buckling in flat sheets containing cracks.

The studies consisted of experimental and theoretical efforts directed toward obtaing a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the dynamic buckling behavior of such shells under a variety of conditions. The conditions studied include different longitudinal conditions imposed on the impacted end of the shell and internal pressurization. In addition, methods of increasing the specific energy dissipation capacity of shells subject to axial impact were studied. A number of interesting results were obtained. It was demonstrated experimentally that buckling of a cylindrical shell is initiated during the first passage of the axial compression stress wave due to the initial impact when the impact velocity is sufficiently high. Another significant experimental result obtained is that the asymmetrical (quasi-developable) form of shell buckling occurs as a result of a smooth transition from the symmetrical ("ring") form of bucklingin some thin cylindrical shells subjected to an axially symmetric axial impact. Analytical subject to a constant velocity end displacement. The method utilizes the finite deflection theory and is a refinement of the procedure due to A.S. Volmir. It shows that both the upper critical stress and the number of circumferential waves increase and the time to initiate buckling decreases with increasing velocity of impact. These trends are in agreement with the analytical results of Volmir and a phenomenological theory due to Coppa.
