Book excerpt: Background: Children in poverty might have a lack of resources, which might influence their general, but also their motor development. Therefore, these children might suffer poorer motor skills than their more fortunate peers. Purpose: The goal of this study is to investigate what the motor skills are of children living in poverty in Antwerp. Furthermore, this study aims to determine the effect of a physical activity program(PAP) on the motor skills of these children. Method: Nine children, living in generational poverty, were recruited from the Centrum Kauwenberg in Antwerp and were divided in the intervention (n = 5) and control (n = 4) group. The intervention consisted of a PAP, that was provided six times over a period of three months. An observation of the motor skills was done, using the observation scales of the CLB (Centra voor Leerlingen Begeleiding ) at intake (T0), directly after the end of the PAP (T1) and after a follow-up period of 3 months (T2). To identify possible motor delay, the quality of movement and the motor skill performance was evaluated. The effect of the PAP on the motor skills was determined by comparing the groups at T0, T1 and T2 using a Wilcoxon rank test & Mann-Whitney U test. Results: The quality of movement generally scored lower than the motor skill performance. The motor skills variated a lot between the different times of assessment. Although the Wilcoxon Rank Test showed that there were no significant differences between the sessions. The Mann-Whitney U test showed that there was no significant difference between both groups. The most plausible reason why the PAP did not have a significant effect is the low frequency. Conclusion: Motor skills of children living in generational poverty are variable. There is no significant effect of a physical activity program on the motor skills of these children.
