Book Synopsis Queer Saint - The Cultured Life of Peter Watson by : Adrian Clark & Jeremy Dronfield

This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Peter Watson was murdered in his bath by a jealous boyfriend in 1956, the art world lost one of its wealthiest, most influential patrons. This compellingly attractive man, adored by Cecil Beaton; a man who was called a legend by contemporaries, who was the subject of two scandalous novels, and who helped launch the careers of Francis Bacon, John Craxton and Lucian Freud, fell victim to a fortune-hungry lover.Elegant and hungrily sexual, Peter Watson had a taste for edgy, disreputable boyfriends. He was the unrequited love of Cecil Beaton's life - his 'queer saint' - but Peter preferred the risk of edgier, less sophisticated lovers, including the beautiful, volatile, drug-addicted prostitute Denham Fouts. Peter's thirst for adventure took him through the cabaret culture of 1930s Berlin, the demi-monde and aristocratic salons of pre-war Paris, English high society, and the glitz of Hollywood's golden age.Gore Vidal described him as 'a charming man, tall, thin, perverse. One of those intricate English queer types who usually end up as field marshals, but because he was so rich he never had to do anything.' Truman Capote called him 'not just another rich queen, but - in a stooped, intellectual, bitter-lipped style - one of the most personable men in England'.More than just a gay playboy, Peter Watson was a renowned connoisseur, and fuelled the engine of mid-twentieth century art with his enormous wealth. Without his patronage, Bacon and Freud might have failed before they'd got started. He also founded the influential British arts journal Horizon with Cyril Connolly and Stephen Spender, and was one of the core founders of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, and organised most of its early exhibitions. From the mystery of his obscure family origins to the enigma surrounding his premature death, this book follows Peter Watson through an odyssey of the mid twentieth century, from high society to sweaty underworld, and discovers a man tormented by depression and doubt; he ultimately wanted love and a sense of self-worth but instead found angst and a squalid death.'PETER WATSON (1908-1956), LONG FORGOTTEN AS AN ASTUTE GREY EMINENCE IN THE ART WORLD OF HIS DAY, DISCERNING COLLECTOR OF PAINTINGS, PATRON OF THE YOUNG AND PROMISING, FOUNDER AND BENEFACTOR OF THE INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS, IS AT LAST AND DESERVEDLY THE SUBJECT OF A SCRUPULOUS AND COMPELLING INVESTIGATION' - BRIAN SEWELL'THIS COMPELLING REDISCOVERY OF THE LIFE AND DEATH OF PETER WATSON CASTS NEW LIGHT ON THE INTELLECTUAL AND ARTISTIC WORLD OF MID-TWENTIETH-CENTURY BRITAIN: THE WORLD OF BACON AND FREUD, CYRIL CONNOLLY AND STEPHEN SPENDER' - LOYD GROSSMAN, CHAIRMAN OF THE HERITAGE ALLIANCE

Book Synopsis Jonson's Spenser by : James A. Riddell
Download or read book Jonson's Spenser written by James A. Riddell and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seldom in the history of literary criticism does evidence like Jonson's annotations to Spenser's The Faerie Queene emerge to so definitely alter our understanding of the opinion of one major poet, writing as both poet and critic, of another major poet.. For centuries, critics have speculated about Jonson's attitude toward Spenser. In recent times, speculation has even led critics to suppose that Jonson's attitude was just the opposite of what new evidence shows it in fact was. Not only do the authors reevaluate the printed record of Jonson's remarks on Spenser, including allusions evident in his own poetry, but they also closely examine all of Jonson's markings and annotations to his copy of the 1617 Folio of The Faerie Queen, The Shepheards Calender and Together With The Other Works. Riddell and Stewart show how consistently these markings and annotations reflect Jonson's understanding and admiration of Spenser's poetic craft. By a careful analysis of the evidence, they show also how Jonson's reactions to Spenser fit into the critical tradition of the seventeenth century surrounding Spenser's greatest poem. That evidence now includes a volume once believed either to have been lost, or perhaps never to have existed. Riddell and Stewart trace the provenance, and then the recovery of this book, and transcribe all of its annotations. (All annotations and representative markings are reproduced in two valuable appendices.) The authors argue that nothing can replace evidence in determining proper answers to intelligible literary questions.
Download or read book At West Dean written by Jim Buckland and published by White Lion Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'I am in awe of what Sarah Wain & Jim Buckland have achieved at West Dean and this superb book is a testament to inspired, uncompromising horticulture at its very best.’ Monty Don At West Dean is the story of how Sarah Wain and Jim Buckland brought back to life a neglected garden in Sussex and is a celebration of the gardening excellence they have established there. Super-tidy sheds, meticulously cared for glasshouses, a biomass boiler and steaming compost heaps are the engine that drive the garden forward but these would be nothing without the artistic vision and thoughtful philosophy that Sarah Wain and Jim Buckland bring to this exemplary garden, which attracts thousands of visitors each year. While West Dean’s expansive site is the starting point, At West Dean highlights the unique combination of persistence, skill and artistry that make for a successful garden in any set of circumstances. Richly illustrated with specially commissioned photographs by award-winning garden photographer Andrea Jones. The glories of the garden through the seasons are shown to their full extent, alongside shots of gardeners at work – pruning and tying in climbers, mowing, raking, labelling, washing pots, stacking canes. The results of their labours enhance the book – carefully pruned trees, exquisite lawns, wildflower meadows, renovated flintwork, beautiful vegetables and freshly topiarized shrubs. The gardens at West Dean are defined by horticultural rigour and contemporary efficiencies set against a Victorian backdrop. They are also part of the Edward James Foundation along with West Dean College, which is widely respected for its Arts and Crafts education (Edward James was a passionate early supporter of surrealism and was the original recipient of Salvador Dali’s famous lobster telephone). At West Dean sets a sublime standard to aspire to and is a joyful reminder of the infinite rewards to be gained from a hard day’s work in the garden. Praise for West Dean: 'One of Britain's most exemplary centres of practical horticulture.' Robin Lane-Fox, Financial Times 'The kitchen garden has to be one of the most perfect examples of its kind.' Noel Kingsbury, The Telegraph 'Jim and Sarah have given much of their lives to the gardens at West Dean. Over the many years that I have visited the garden I am always amazed at the high level of horticulture that is displayed in the grounds, and under glass. Over 25 years this incredible pair have gardened to a level that is admirable, and inspirational.' Christine Walkden, horticulturist, broadcaster and writer.
