Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Educational Policy of the Whitney Government: Three Years of Progressive Legislation and Administration; 1905-1908 The educational policy of the present Government is avowedly based upon the principle of fulfilling in all respects the promises made by Mr. Whitney and his associates when in Opposition. Although the Government has been but three years in office, and the reorganization of the educational system involves exhaustive enquiry into existing conditions and much arduous reconstructive, work, a striking advance has already been made in both administration and educational efficiency. It was impossible to eradicate in a short time defects which had been allowed to develop in the school system over a long period of years. But enough has been accomplished to vindicate the sincerity and vigour of the Administration and the success of its efforts. The record of three years' progress is inspiring. In 1905 discontent with our schools had become general. Pro found dissatisfaction was felt both by the parents of children and by educationists themselves. It was contended, and with truth, that a kind of lethargy had crept over the whole system; that the schools were not giving the? Kind of instruction best designed to fit the child for after life; that teachers were underpaid and often imperfectly trained; that the public schools, especially in the rural districts, had. Been allowed to become inefficient; that the cost and number of text books constituted a heavy burden upon the parents; that the examina tion system had been pushed to such extremes as to undermine the real purpose and effect of education; that an adequate voice in the framing of educational reforms was denied to the teachers; and that the Pro vincial University was languishing for lack of financial support and proper administrative control. To every one of these complaints a deaf ear had been turned for years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whitney Government's Educational Policy I think, Sir, it is quite clear that the. Objection raised against the Mo del school system is not at all well taken. And as for the objection. That the examinations were' not rigid enough and that every student was allowed to pass, this is really a charge aga.nst the local Examining Boards. Rather than against the Model school system, and cannot be an argument in isvor of abolishing the system. If it is true that the local examining boards were inefficient. Why not, by appointing district boards. Or a cen tral board of examiners, abolish the local examining board rather than the system itself. Book Synopsis Language in Education by : Rita Elaine Silver
Download or read book Language in Education written by Rita Elaine Silver and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers in any subject area must have a basic understanding of how language is learned and used in educational contexts because language impacts teaching and learning across all subjects. This book is written specifically for those teachers and teacher traineeslearning to teach who want to know more about language learning and use in educational contexts and, especially, those who care about the social implications of language in education. Chapters address crucial questions that teachers must address: How is language structured? How is language learned at home and in school, by first, second and bilingual language learners? How is language used in classrooms to shape learning? How does language vary in different regions and due to social characteristics of users? How can language be used to make meaning in different modes (oral/written) and contexts? How do language policies intersect with education policies, and how do these impact teachers? The chapters are full of examples of language use in educational contexts to help readers understand language in action. The examples not only highlight key points, they also provide opportunities for readers to deepen their understanding by experiencing analysis of language. Each chapter closes with a discussion of relevance to educational settings and questions which can be used for in-class discussion or personal reflection. Suggestions for further readings and online viewing are included, and a comprehensive companion website is available

Book Synopsis Quiet Evolution by : Robin S. Harris
Download or read book Quiet Evolution written by Robin S. Harris and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1967-12-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few years there have been several changes in the educational system of Ontario: a reorganization of the Department of Education, the abolition of the school section, the establishment of post-secondary institutions of applied arts and technology, and the reform of Grade 13. Others are in prospect: the abolition of Grade 13 departmental examinations, the requirement that all elementary school teachers must have a university degree, and the establishment of an educational television network. These changes are evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Representing less a break with tradition than a logical expansion of it, they are developments that are consistent with the rationale of the system as it has evolved in the course of one hundred and fifty years. This study is concerned with the nature and significance of these changes in relation to the dimensions and organization of the system itself. It describes the system as it exists today, identifies those features of it which are either unique or distinctive, and explains by reference to their historical development how these unusual features have come to occupy their present position. The author also investigates the disadvantages as well as the advantages of the present approach to education in Ontario, pointing out that the system has become such a vast complex that it is exposed to the dangers of fragmentation and compartmentalization. The basic problem is one of co-ordination, which could be remedied by closer liaison between government departments and by the establishment of improved communications between educational institutions. This account is a valuable contribution to the public debate on education in Ontario.
