Book excerpt: Netanel Lorch, who fought as an officer in Jerusalem during Israel’s War of Independence and later founded the Israel Defense Forces’ Historical Section, offers a detailed military history of the years 1947-49. The book begins with the tensions of the British Mandate period in Palestine, including the international debates over proposed boundaries for the new Jewish state, and examines the chaos that followed the British evacuation, the invasion of five Arab armies supported by guerrilla fighters inside Israel, the defeat of the Arab armies, and the signing of armistice agreements at Rhodes. It surveys the strength, weaknesses, equipment and manpower of Jewish and Arab forces and describes the strategies and tactics used in operations launched by all sides, together with the results of the battles that led to Israel’s pre-1967 borders. “In splendidly crisp, frugal but always fluent narrative, Col. Netanel Lorch relates how Israel won her life with ‘The Edge of the Sword.’ It is an apt title for this masterly deployment of bare facts, devoid of speculative afterthoughts, almost devoid of comment... I rate this book a splendid job of work, absorbing to a student of war, a fit memorial to heroic events passing comprehension.” — The New York Times “... minute in its detail, meticulous in its completeness, matter of fact in its style... but, professional objectivity notwithstanding, he offers a penetrating insight into the passions and purposes that underlay this struggle.” — Herbert Kupferberg, The New York Herald Tribune “Lorch... was fortunate in holding a position in which he was able to obtain and sift much data not normally available to the public. This he has done admirably... It is a timely, comprehensive book... clearly a must for the bookshelf of everyone who takes an interest in military matters or in the Middle East.” — Edgar O’Ballance, The Spectator, London “... a fascinating work. The book teems with technical details and military terms; it gives blow by blow the story of every campaign, and almost every action.” — Marvin Lowenthal, Jewish Social Studies “Genuine history, admirably written...” — Bernard Fergussen, London Daily Telegraph “[Lorch] writes with a clarity quite unusual in military specialists... superbly written and fascinating.” — The Cape Argus, Capetown “The most detailed and most searching study of this momentous little war which has yet been published. It is also remarkably readable... it teaches quietly and with no brashness, a number of salutary lessons, strategic and tactical, logistic and moral, which every soldier ought to ponder... Lorch’s narrative is as candid as it is well marshalled. He is not sparing in his criticism of Israeli mistakes. He does not sneer and he does not exult.” — Journal of the Royal United Services Institution

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Coexistence to Conquest seeks to explain how the Arab-Israeli conflict developed by looking beyond strict legalism to the men behind the policies adopted by the Great Powers at the dawn of the twentieth century. It controversially argues that Zionism was adopted by the British Government in its 1917 Balfour Declaration primarily as an immigration device and that it can be traced back to the 1903 Royal Commission on Alien Immigration and the Alien’s Act 1905. The book contains the most detailed legal analysis of the 1915-6 Hussein-McMahon correspondence, as well as the Balfour Declaration, and takes a closer look at the travaux préparatoires that formed the British Mandate of Palestine. It places the violent reaction of the Palestine Arabs to mass Jewish immigration in the context of Zionism, highlighting the findings of several British commissions of inquiry which recommended that Britain abandon its policy. The book also revisits the controversies over the question of self-determination, and the partition of Palestine. The Chapter on the 1948 conflict seeks to update international lawyers on the scholarship of Israel’s ‘new’ historians and reproduces some of the horrific accounts of the atrocities that took place from newspaper reports, UN documents, and personal accounts, which saw the expulsion and exodus of almost an entire people from their homeland. The penultimate chapter argues that Israel was created through an act of conquest or subjugation. The book concludes with a sobering analysis of the conflict arguing that neither Jews nor Arabs were to blame for starting it.
Book Synopsis Why was the State of Israel 'Really' Established? by : Erez Casif
Download or read book Why was the State of Israel 'Really' Established? written by Erez Casif and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-08 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most historians of Zionism – from the ‘Jerusalem School’ and its followers, as well as those who call themselves ‘new historians’ – understand the story of Israel’s establishment as a part of a broader historic story that encompasses hundreds and even thousands of years. They consider the Zionist leadership to be a unified entity and thus relate the decision to establish the state of Israel during May 1948 to international, rather than internal, restraints and challenges. The author of this book suggests a different theoretical approach – as an alternative to the above – that considers the struggle to establish a Jewish state much more as a struggle for power within the future state, whose imminent establishment was more or less certain. This point of view provides new insights into important historic events such as the ‘rebellion’ of NMO head Menaahem Begin; the ‘Saison’; the cooperation between Zionist underground movements from the fall of 1945 through to the summer of 1946; the explosion at the King David Hotel in July 1946; the first stage of the War of Independence; and the foundation of ‘The People’s Committee’ in April 1948 and its declaration of the establishment of an independent Jewish state during May 1948.

Book Synopsis Middle East Rules of Thumb by : Steven Carol
Download or read book Middle East Rules of Thumb written by Steven Carol and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Middle East Rules of Thumb is of interest to anyone that seeks a better understanding of the complexities of the Middle East-its history, politics, diplomacy, and culture. Through the 50 rules and their appendices, Professor Steven Carol offers a realistic historical perspective on this important region. As has been constantly pointed out by such media monitors as Honest Reporting, Palestine Media Watch, and CAMERA, Middle East issues can often become muddled and confusing, particularly since the mainstream media often commits sins of biased omission-leaving out important information that can help the public comprehend the entire picture. The highly reliable information presented in Middle East Rules of Thumb seeks to counteract these inaccuracies. Readers will gain insight by applying these rules when hearing or reading news or commentaries on these subjects. Middle East Rules of Thumb is the product of many years of academic research. It will not be readily dated, like many other books in the field, because the underlying principles compiled here are valid and immutable. It belongs in the "reference" category for anyone concerned with war and peace in the Middle East.
Book Synopsis Justice and Peace in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict by : Yaacov Bar Siman Tov
Download or read book Justice and Peace in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict written by Yaacov Bar Siman Tov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, the late Prof. Yaacov Bar-Siman-Tov argues that the failure of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process so far has been mainly the result of the inability of both sides to reach an agreed formula for linking justice to peace. The issues of justice and injustice are focused mainly on the outcomes of the 1947-1949 first Arab-Israeli War and specifically in the creation of the Palestinian refugee problem. The conflicting historical narratives of the two sides regarding the question of responsibility for the injustice done to the Palestinians turn the Israeli-Palestinian conflict into a classic case of linking the issues of justice and peace.Yaacov Bar-Siman-Tov maintains that the narratives of justice and injustice in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have proved to be formidable barriers to peace. Hence, he recommends that justice should be compromised for the sake of peace. The link between justice and peace is an important issue requiring both sides’ attention, but, given the wide and currently unbridgeable gap separating the two sides, it should be postponed to the phase of reconciliation rather than being included in the process of conflict resolution. The two-state solution is endorsed as the best and practical solution and as a first step for a "just peace" in this conflict, to be followed by reconciliation. Highly topical, this book is essential reading for scholars and researchers of International Relations, Peace Studies and the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Book Synopsis Scars of War, Wounds of Peace : The Israeli-Arab Tragedy by : Shlomo Ben-Ami Former Foreign Minister of Israel
Download or read book Scars of War, Wounds of Peace : The Israeli-Arab Tragedy written by Shlomo Ben-Ami Former Foreign Minister of Israel and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2006-02-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Oxford-trained historian who became Israeli Foreign Minister, Shlomo Ben-Ami was a key figure in the Camp David negotiations and many other rounds of peace talks, public and secret, with Palestinian and Arab officials. He offers here an unflinching account of the Arab-Israeli conflict, informed by his firsthand knowledge of the major characters and events. Clear-eyed and unsparing, Ben-Ami traces the twists and turns of the Middle East conflict and the many missteps of the Israelis and Palestinians. The author paints particularly trenchant portraits of key figures from Ben-Gurion to Bill Clinton, and gives us behind-the-scenes accounts of the meetings in Oslo, Madrid, and Camp David. He is highly critical of Ariel Sharon and the late Yasser Arafat ("the sad embodiment of an archaic political orthodoxy devoid of a vision for the future"). He sees Arafat's rejection of Clinton's peace plan as a crime against the Palestinian people. The author is also critical of President Bush's Middle East policy ("a presumptuous grand strategy"). And along the way, Ben-Ami highlights the many blunders on both sides, describing for instance how the great victory of the Six Day War launched many Israelis on a misbegotten "messianic" dream of controlling all the Biblical Jewish lands, actually making the Palestinian problem much worse. In contrast, it has only been when Israel has suffered setbacks that it has made moves towards peace. The best hope for the region, he concludes, is to create an international mandate in the Palestinian territories that would lead to the implementation of Clinton's two-state peace parameters. Scars of War, Wounds of Peace is a major work of history--with by far the most fair and balanced critique of Israel ever to come from one of its key officials. It is an absolute must-read for everyone who wants to understand the dynamics of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Book Synopsis The Sword And The Olive by : Martin Van Creveld
Download or read book The Sword And The Olive written by Martin Van Creveld and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2008-08-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining razor-sharp analysis with dramatic narrative, vivid portraits of soldiers and commanders with illuminating discussions of battle tactics and covert actions, The Sword and the Olive traces the history of the IDF from its beginnings in Palestine to today. The book also goes beyond chronology to wrestle with the political and ethical struggles that have shaped the IDF and the country it serves—struggles that are manifesting themselves in the recent tragic escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Often revisionist in attitude, surprising in many of its conclusions, this book casts new light on the struggle for peace in the Middle East.
Download or read book High Stakes written by Vic Flintham and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2008-10-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the dust of World War II had settled, the military position of the UK was far from straightforward. It was of course allied to the USA and part of NATO, but it was at odds with the former in maintaining an Empire and the two nations also had competing oil interests in the Middle East. The UK's engagement in war after 1945 was thus a strange mixture ranging from homeland security through insular actions within the colonies or protectorates to preserve empire - to playing a major role in confronting the USSR. The types of active involvement of the RAF, Fleet Air Arm and Army Air Corps between 1945 and 1995 include the following, with examples. Maintaining Local Stability - Greece, Netherlands East Indies. Maintaining Empire - Malaya, Kenya. Defending Empire - Borneo. Defending Interests - Suez, Kuwait. Homeland Security - Northern Ireland, air defence. Confrontation - Berlin Airlift, Korea. Covert Action - Albania, strategic reconnaissance. Humanitarian and Peacekeeping- Jordan, Cyprus. Development of Deterrent - Bombs, bombers and missiles.
