Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Agricultural and Food Policies by : Johan Swinnen
Download or read book The Political Economy of Agricultural and Food Policies written by Johan Swinnen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the European Association of Agricultural Economists Book Award Food and agriculture have been subject to heavy-handed government interventions throughout much of history and across the globe, both in developing and in developed countries. Today, more than half a trillion US dollars are spent by some governments to support farmers, while other governments impose regulations and taxes that hurt farmers. Some policies, such as price regulations and tariffs, distribute income but reduce total welfare by introducing economic distortions. Other policies, such as public investments in research, food standards, or land reforms, may increase total welfare, but these policies come also with distributional effects. These distributional effects influence the preferences of interest groups and in turn influence policy decisions. Political considerations are therefore crucial to understand how agricultural and food policies are determined, to identify the constraints within which welfare-enhancing reforms are possible (or not), and finally to understand how coalitions can be created to stimulate growth and reduce poverty.
Book Synopsis Agriculture and Economic Development in Europe Since 1870 by : Pedro Lains
Download or read book Agriculture and Economic Development in Europe Since 1870 written by Pedro Lains and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-09-11 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst many books on the European economy have focused on the analysis of its industrial sectors, this book draws attention to the often ignored contribution made by the development of European agriculture over the past two centuries. In doing so, the authors adopt a revisionist perspective on the subject, addressing the lack of coherent study of the agricultural sector and reassessing old theories about the links between agricultural and economic development. In focusing on those countries which by 1870 still had a large agricultural sector, namely, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, The Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Hungary, Greece and Turkey, this book determines the role of the agricultural sector in the economic development of Europe. These chapters demonstrate how the rate of development in the agricultural sector depended on specific industrial, political and market conditions; the diversity of ways and timings through which transformation was achieved is also considered.
Book Synopsis Agricultural Economics and Policy: International Challenges for the Nineties by : K. Burger
Download or read book Agricultural Economics and Policy: International Challenges for the Nineties written by K. Burger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-01-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International challenges in agricultural economics for the nineties will come from a redirection of the EC policy, stimulated by GATT negotiations, the opening towards Eastern Europe and environmental considerations, from a production oriented policy towards rural policy, aiming at protecting vulnerable regions, maintaining a rural population, curtailing production in the West and fostering it in the East, and aiming at the provision of environmentally desirable output. This book focusses on developments that are bound to dominate the discussion of agricultural economics and policy in the years to come. Together, the contributions give a vivid picture of the dynamic times that lie ahead for both Eastern and Western European agriculture, and of the profound changes that will be forced upon agricultural policy.
Book Synopsis European Agriculture by : Brian Gardner
Download or read book European Agriculture written by Brian Gardner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is central to both economic and environmental developments in Europe. But with the advent of new environmental legislation and political change in Europe the CAP faces increasing pressure to reform. European Agriculture provides a comprehensive breakdown of the workings of the CAP and its impact on farming in Europe. The author discusses every aspect of European agricultural policy, production and trade, from environmental contraints and the impact of biotechnology, to the role of European farming in the world food supply system. Posing direct questions about the recent 1992 agricultural reform, the 1994 GATT agreement and the reasons for the expensive continuation of the CAP, European Agriculture analyses the economic, political and environmental implications of pursuing present farming policy and provides a provocative commentary on the agricultural future of Europe.
Book Synopsis The Macroeconomics of European Agriculture by : Thorvaldur Gylfason
Download or read book The Macroeconomics of European Agriculture written by Thorvaldur Gylfason and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union from a macroeconomic perspective. This approach is based on recent empirical evidence from various sources indicating that the cost of present agricultural protection in Europe to consumers and taxpayers in terms of welfare lost and of output foregone is higher than has been commonly understood. This conclusion is supported by assessing the cost of farm protection by simple general-equilibrium analysis that reflects the implicit discrimination involved against manufacturing, trade, and services in Europe. Whereas short-run partial-equilibrium studies have generally indicated deadweight losses due to farm support equivalent to about 1 percent of GDP on average, long-run general-equilibrium considerations are shown to raise the loss estimates to about 3 percent of GDP. By lowering costs and prices, freer farm trade could deliver a substantial long-run supply-side boost to the European economy and to the world economy as a whole, facilitating a noninflationary decrease in interest rates and unemployment in Western Europe and possibly also paving the way for export-led growth in Central and Eastern Europe in the years ahead. Even so, there may remain a cultural justification for continued public support for agriculture in Europe; if so, such support needs to be made more effective and more efficient than it is now.
Book Synopsis The Economics of Agriculture, Volume 2 by : David Gale Johnson
Download or read book The Economics of Agriculture, Volume 2 written by David Gale Johnson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D. Gale Johnson, one of the world's foremost agricultural economists, has over the last five decades changed the conduct of research on agricultural economics and policy. The papers brought together in The Economics of Agriculture reveal the breadth and depth of his influence on the creation of modern agricultural economics. Volume 1 collects for the first time in one source Johnson's most important work. These classic papers explore the consequences of government intervention in United States and world agriculture; the economics of agricultural supply and of rural labor and human capital issues; and the analysis of agricultural productivity in poor countries, including the centrally planned economies of China and Eastern Europe. Models of precise reasoning and powerful empirical research, the papers cover a wide range of topics—from U.S. commodity price policy to the economics of population control and farm policy reform in China. Volume 1 includes a definitive bibliography of Johnson's published writings. Volume 2 presents twenty-two papers by Johnson's former students and colleagues. International in scope, these papers explore themes and topics inspired by Johnson's work, including agricultural policy and U.S. farm prices; European Common Agricultural Policy; and agricultural and rural development in the Third World. Contributors to Volume 2 are David G. Abler, John M. Antle, Richard R. Barichello, Andrew P. Barkley, Karen Brooks, David S. Bullock, Robert E. Evenson, B. Delworth Gardner, Bruce L. Gardner, Dale M. Book Synopsis Agriculture and the European Community by : John S. Marsh
Download or read book Agriculture and the European Community written by John S. Marsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980. From the earliest beginnings of the European Economic Community, it was recognised that a common market for agriculture would be one of the basic prerequisites for workable economic unity. And yet the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) remained a subject of much controversy and debate. The CAP, more than any other element of European policy, was seen to test the true depth of the commitment shown by Community members to the practice as well as the principle of economic integration. Agriculture and the European Community examines the reasons for the existence of the CAP and its format. It outlines the main instruments, price and structural policy, and the changing emphasis between them. It discusses in turn the effects of the CAP on producers’ income levels and on consumer prices; how far it had fulfilled the promises of the Treaty of Rome; the implications of the policy for third country trade; and its place within the Community as a whole. The study argues that, although incomes of Community farmers had improved, this is not simply the result of the CAP, nor was the geographical distribution of benefit in terms of farming income satisfactory. The policy has achieved a degree of success in securing food supplies and stabilising prices but the cost to the consumer has been high. Knowledge of the CAP had become almost essential to any understanding of modern European affairs. Agriculture and the European Community will serve as a straightforward introduction to the policy for students approaching the subject for the first time, especially in departments of Agricultural Economics, European Studies and Political Science.
Book Synopsis European Agriculture by : Frank Fuller
Download or read book European Agriculture written by Frank Fuller and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth look at Europe's changing agricultural and food markets, focusing on the impacts of recent policy reforms, enlargement of the European Union (EU), and trade liberalisation. The papers included in this book braid together four important themes in European agriculture and food markets: the impacts of EU enlargement on productivity growth and catching up in the Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs), the influence of food quality standards on market structures in the CEECs and on trade, the impacts of common agricultural policy (CAP) reforms on EU and world markets, and the costs of adjusting to CAP reforms in specific sectors. The insights provided in these papers into the empirical interactions between policies, institutions, and market outcomes, both domestically and internationally, are valuable to policy makers and researchers interested in the future of European agriculture.

Book Synopsis Freer Trade, Sustainability, and the Primary Production Sector in the Southern EU: Unraveling the Evidence from Greece by : J. Lekakis
Download or read book Freer Trade, Sustainability, and the Primary Production Sector in the Southern EU: Unraveling the Evidence from Greece written by J. Lekakis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freer Trade, Sustainability, and the Primary Production Sector in the Southern European Union is the first full-scale academic work to cap ture the primary production sector policy aspects of trade liberaliza tion and sustainability with a detailed focus on a typical southern EU country, Greece. Many efforts were pooled together in making this book. In May 1996 the Department of Economics of the University of Crete organ ized an international conference on European Agriculture in the light of the recent WTO agreement and the need for sustainable develop ment. The conference was sponsored by the European Commission (DG XII, contract no ENV4-CT-96-6514), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC, contract no L320263049), the Hellenic Ministries for Agriculture and for the Environment, and the University of Crete. While summarizing the conclusions of the conference, sev eral speakers felt that the issues relating to the Southern EU would de serve separate coverage. The conference directors judged that cover age of the issues for a single Southern EU country might have an ad vantage, regarding detail, over a cross country analysis which would certainly be welcome at a later stage. Responding to this call, the University of Crete generously reallo cated all of its infra-structural costs covered by DG XII, ESRC, and the other sponsors above, in the form of a new grant to host a follow-up conference aiming to explore the issues for Greece.

It is of relevance to a wide circle of readers, including researchers and politicians but also students and others concerned with agri-environmental issues.' - Stefanie Engel and Ulrike Grote, Quarterly Journal of International Agriculture '. . . the book has the potential to provide something for everyone.' - Stefan Bäckmann, European Review of Agricultural Economics Although the history of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is dominated by a process of centralisation, growing pressures to integrate agri-environmental problems into the CAP have revealed the need to embrace decentralised approaches in an efficient federal structure. Indeed, in recent years it has become increasingly evident that the agricultural sector must undergo fundamental changes in order to enter an era of sustainable development.

Book excerpt: Ulrich Koester researches and teaches at the Institute for Agricultural Economics at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany. He has been a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry for over 20 years.
