This book was released on 2008 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book at hand presents a careful selection of relevant applications of CI methods for transport, logistics, and supply chain management problems. The chapters illustrate the current state-of-the-art in the application of CI methods in these fields and should help and inspire researchers and practitioners to apply and develop efficient methods. A few contributions in this book are extended versions of papers presented at EvoTransLog2007: The First European Workshop on Evolutionary Computation in Transportation and Logistics which was held in Valencia, Spain, in 2007. The majority of contributions are from additional, specially selected researchers, who have done relevant work in different areas of transport, logistics, and supply chain management. The goal is to broadly cover representative applications in these fields as well as different types of solution approaches. On the application side, the contributions focus on design of traffic and transportation networks, vehicle routing, and other important aspects of supply chain management such as inventory management, lot sizing, and lot scheduling. On the method side, the contributions deal with evolutionary algorithms, local search approaches, and scatter search combined with other CI techniques such as neural networks or fuzzy approaches. The book is structured according to the application domains. Thus, it has three parts dealing with traffic and transportation networks, vehicle routing, and supply chain management.

Book excerpt: This work brings together some of the most up to date research in the application of operations research and mathematical modeling te- niques to problems arising in supply chain management and e-Commerce. While research in the broad area of supply chain management enc- passes a wide range of topics and methodologies, we believe this book provides a good snapshot of current quantitative modeling approaches, issues, and trends within the field. Each chapter is a self-contained study of a timely and relevant research problem in supply chain mana- ment. The individual works place a heavy emphasis on the application of modeling techniques to real world management problems. In many instances, the actual results from applying these techniques in practice are highlighted. In addition, each chapter provides important mana- rial insights that apply to general supply chain management practice. The book is divided into three parts. The first part contains ch- ters that address the new and rapidly growing role of the internet and e-Commerce in supply chain management. Topics include e-Business applications and potentials; customer service issues in the presence of multiple sales channels, varying from purely Internet-based to traditional physical outlets; and risk management issues in e-Business in B2B m- kets.

Unique features include: -A focus on the intersection of quantitative supply chain analysis and E-Business, -Unlike other edited volumes in the supply chain area, this is a handbook rather than a collection of research papers. Each chapter was written by one or more leading researchers in the area. These authors were invited on the basis of their scholarly expertise and unique insights in a particular sub-area, -As much attention is given to looking back as to looking forward. Most chapters discuss at length future research needs and research directions from both theoretical and practical perspectives, -Most chapters describe in detail the quantitative models used for analysis and the theoretical underpinnings; many examples and case studies are provided to demonstrate how the models and the theoretical insights are relevant to real situations, -Coverage of most state-of-the-art business practices in supply chain management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of my research in the field of multi levellot sizing and scheduling which started in May 1993 at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel (Germany). During this time I discovered more and more interesting aspects ab out this subject and I had to learn that not every promising idea can be thoroughly evaluated by one person alone. Nevertheless, I am now in the position to present some results which are supposed to be useful for future endeavors. Since April 1995 the work was done with partial support from the research project no. Dr 170/4-1 from the "Deutsche For schungsgemeinschaft" (D FG). The remaining space in this preface shaH be dedicated to those who gave me valuable support: First, let me express my deep gratitude towards my thesis ad visor Prof. Dr. Andreas Drexl. He certainly is a very outstanding advisor. Without his steady suggestions, this work would not have come that far. Despite his scarce time capacities, he never rejected proof-reading draft versions of working papers, and he was always willing to discuss new ideas - the good as weH as the bad ones. He and Prof. Dr. Gerd Hansen refereed this thesis. I am in debted to both for their assessment. I am also owing something to Dr. Knut Haase. Since we al most never had the same opinion when discussing certain lot sizing aspects, his comments and criticism gave stimulating input.

The higher echelon is a single location reffered to as the depot, which places orders for supply of a single com modity. The lower echelon consists of several points, called the retailers, which are supplied by shipments from the depot, and at which random demands for the item occur. Stocks are reviewed and decisions are made periodically. Orders and/or shipments may each require a fixed lead time before reaching their respective desti nations. Section II gives a short literature review of distribution research. Section III introduces the multi-echelon distribution system together with the underlying as sumptions and gives a description of how this problem can be viewed as a Markovian Decision Process. Section IV discusses the concept of cost modifications in a distribution context. Section V presents the test-examples together with their optimal solutions and also gives the characteristic properties of these optimal solutions. These properties then will be used in section VI to give adapted ver sions of various heuristics which were used in assembly experiments previously and which will be tested against the test-examples.

Book excerpt: In February 2002, the Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) De partment at the University of Florida hosted a National Science Founda tion Workshop on Collaboration and Negotiation in Supply Chain Man agement and E Commerce. This workshop focused on characterizing the challenges facing leading edge firms in supply chain management and electronic commerce, and identifying research opportunities for de veloping new technological and decision support capabilities sought by industry. The audience included practitioners in the areas of supply chain management and E Commerce, as well as academic researchers working in these areas. The workshop provided a unique setting that has facilitated ongoing dialog between academic researchers and industry practitioners. This book codifies many of the important themes and issues around which the workshop discussions centered. The editors of this book, all faculty members in the ISE Department at the University of Florida, also served as the workshop's coordinators. In addition to workshop participants, we also invited contributions from leading academics and practitioners who were not able to attend. As a result, the chapters herein represent a collection of research contributions, monographs, and case studies from a variety of disciplines and viewpoints. On the aca demic side alone, chapter authors include faculty members in supply chain and operations management, marketing, industrial engineering, economics, computer science, civil and environmental engineering, and building construction departments.
