Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic Journal, 1906, Vol. 16: The Journal of the Royal Economic Society What should be noted is that the idea that the conditions which are observed before the framing of a tariff will remain unaffected after that tariff has come into force is entirely untenable. These gold prices which lie at the root of the calculations are them selves determined by the course of trade; alter the course of that trade and the gold prices will be affected, and the whole elaborate structure will be thrown immediately out of relation to the con ditions upon which it is imposed. Book excerpt: First published in 1973. This is the second edition and nine years after when The Age of Marshall was first published. The period 1890-1915 in the history of British Economic Thought may aptly be described as the Age of Marshall. His influence as teacher, and his ideas as presented in the Principles of Economics (1890) and other writings, stimulated and often dominated the ideas and writings of most of the younger economists of the period. His ideas also provided a theoretical basis for increasing state intervention in economic life of the community in Britain and thus helped the Liberal Government of Great Britain lay the foundations of a Welfare State.
Book Synopsis Sovereign Debt and International Financial Control by : Ali Co?kun Tunçer
Download or read book Sovereign Debt and International Financial Control written by Ali Co?kun Tunçer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits an important chapter of financial history in the Middle East and the Balkans from 1870 1914. During this period, capital flows in the form of sovereign debt increased rapidly throughout the region. The spiral of heavy government borrowing eventually culminated in defaults on foreign obligations in the Ottoman Empire (1875), Egypt (1876), Greece (1893) and Serbia (1895). In all four cases, introducing international financial control over the finances of the debtor states became the prevalent form of dealing with defaults. The different cases of international financial control became increasingly refined and they marked important milestones in the evolution of the global governance of sovereign debt before 1914. For the defaulting states however, the immediate impact of international financial control was infringement of sovereignty. The extent of international financial control and the borrowing capacity of debtor states varied in each case as well as the degree of resistance towards it. This book documents the characteristics of international financial control in a comparative perspective. It relates sovereign debt, default and international financial control to political and fiscal systems, and raises questions about the tension between national sovereignty and global capital. It sheds light on the impact of international financial control on the long-term credibility and fiscal capacity of the debtor states in question. The author demonstrates that the governments' decisions to borrow internationally, and their attitudes towards international financial control, were heavily influenced by domestic political and fiscal factors.

Book Synopsis The Political and Economic Thought of the Young Keynes by : Carlo Cristiano
Download or read book The Political and Economic Thought of the Young Keynes written by Carlo Cristiano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, John Maynard Keynes entered the Treasury to serve his country during the First World War, but as is well known, appalled by the terms of the end-of-war Treaty of Versailles, he abandoned the British delegation, outlining the predictable adverse results in the Economic Consequences of the Peace, published in 1919. Far less well known is his personal and political development that led him to be called to service even before Great Britain entered the conflict. Starting from Keynes’s early political activity, Carlo Cristiano charts the stages through which Alfred Marshall’s young pupil rapidly rose to be one of his country’s major experts on monetary issues. The very young Liberal Imperialist was soon to become a staunch supporter of the liberal government, strongly committed to Lloyd George’s 1909 ‘people’s budget’. Moreover, the good relations he had established during his two years at the India Office of London and his growing expertise in money and finance, made him one of the few who genuinely grasped the functioning of the pre-war gold standard, and an ally of the Treasury and the Bank of England in the struggle within the City for control and management of London’s gold reserves. Abandoning the stereotyped image of Keynes in his early years, so often described as a young connoisseur interested in philosophy and with little inclination for politics, this book sees his perfect fusion of political vision and economic competence in the era of ‘New Liberalism’ as the true wellspring of Keynesianism.
Book Synopsis An Introduction to Post-Keynesian and Marxian Theories of Value and Price by : Peter M. Lichtenstein

This book was released on 2017-01-20 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter M. Lichtenstein believes that any social-economic theory of capitalism must begin with a theory of value and price. Dismissing the neoclassical school, he turns to post-Keynesian and Marxian economics with their coherent and consistent theories of value and price based on concrete objective circumstances. The development of these theories in the author’s aim because he believes that this approach comes much closer than neoclassical theory to capturing the essence of a capitalism economy. This book, first published in 1983, is addressed to economics students, especially to those studying microeconomics or the history of economic thought, and to economists seeking an overview of these issues.
