This book was released on 2002-10-07 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Sawasdee Khrap welcome to the kingdom of Thailand. A number of valid characterizations such as The Land of Smiles , The Land of Temples and Pagodas and Tropical Vacation Paradise describe Thailand at its best. In addition to these picturesque synonyms, the kingdom gained international recognition through its growing travel and hospitality industry. In 2001 Thailand once again booked the top spot as most preferred tourist destination in South East Asia as well as runner-up position in all of Asia, second only to China. When Muslim extremists hijacked four domestic U.S. flights and cowardly carried out the terrorist attack of 9-11 on the U.S.A., the global travel sector felt the direct impact of the terrorist attacks like no other industry. From one day to the other tourists decided to stay at or close to home and hotel rooms were left vacant. As major employer and source for foreign exchange earnings, Thailand s tourism industry was no exception to the threat. As the brutality and human tragedy of this incident will always be remembered, the following report will focus solely on the implications for the tourism and hospitality industry. In specific, the text will take an in-depth look at the development of the first class hotel market in Bangkok following the September attacks. The report looks at 14 top hotels of Bangkok and their performance from January 2000 to March 2002. Special attention lies on the seven months following the U.S.A. attacks in September 2001, whereas a full year comparison of 2000 and 2001 will also provide valid information. The tourism and hospitality industry is a major economic driving factor not only for Thailand, but also for many other Asian nations. Therefore, the beginning of this report deals with the regional development after the terrorist attacks. This way the reader will get an understanding of the current situation in Asia and the general impact of 9-11. After a general overview of Thailand, the first class hotel market of Bangkok will be analyzed by its occupancy, ADR and RevPar development. These performance related information create the backbone of this report and support further assumptions and findings. For validity reasons, the results are then compared to two independent surveys. The fourth section is made up of the changes in travel patterns, tourism demand and strategies, followed by a comparison of the two best performing individual hotels and their advantages over [...]

Download or read book Counting the Costs written by Jonathan Rigg and published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. This book was released on 1995 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an international panel of specialists on Thailand who share a common concern for the environment, this volume examines the causes and consequences of environment change both in the countryside and the urban areas of the Kingdom. The papers, however, in no sense reflect a common view; the authors embrace contrasting environmental ideologies in discussing a wide range of concerns. These include the role of Buddhism and tourism in promoting sustainable development, environmental systems of thought and action, the practicalities of water pollution control in Bangkok and the Gulf of Thailand, and the changing bases of life and livelihood among the hill peoples of the North. The environment as an issue of concern is now important phase of assimilation, interpretation, prescription and action. The papers in this volume reflect this change.

Moreover, the importance of the environment and social issues is minimal in the tourism development of Thailand. There are the three main objectives of the study. Firstly, the important factors affecting the consumption behavior of tourists should be determined. Secondly, the foreign tourist consumption relates to the environment. Finally, this study is to evaluate the impact of tourism. The results indicate that non-food and lodging are luxury goods according to their expenditure elasticities. Eating out, non-food, alcoholic beverages and tobacco, transport, and lodging places are complementary according to their price elasticities. Total inbound tourism expenditure significant influences on carbon dioxide emissions from transport. The tourism expenditure has a positive relationship with carbon dioxide emissions from transport while the carbon dioxide emissions from the power generation sectors and the cost of wastewater management for tourists are not affected by the tourism expenditure. The simulation results reveal that an increase in inbound tourism expenditure results in the positive impact on the economy of Thailand because of an increase in GDP, the price level, total exports from tourism, total imports, foreign savings and government revenue, consumption, production, total output, the demand for labor and the return on primary factors, while there is a decrease in total income without tourism. For social impacts of tourism, rural households are beneficiaries of the increase in tourism expenditure in terms of income and consumption. For environmental impact of tourism, CO2 emissions from transport are significant from the increase in tourism expenditure. Results indicate that the economic and social effects of are greater than the environmental effect.
Book Synopsis Assessing the Economic Impact of Tourism by : Samuel Meng
Download or read book Assessing the Economic Impact of Tourism written by Samuel Meng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model – a widely used economic model which uses actual data to provide economic analysis and policy assessment – and applies it to economic data on Singapore’s tourism industry. The authors set out to demonstrate how a novice modeller can acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully apply general equilibrium models to tourism studies. The chapters explain how to build a computable general equilibrium model for tourism, how to conduct simulation and, most importantly, how to analyse modelling results. This applied study acts as a modelling book at both introductory and intermediate levels, specifically targeting students and researchers who are interested in and wish to learn computable general equilibrium modelling. The authors offer insightful analysis of Singapore’s tourism industry and provide both students and researchers with a guide on how to apply general equilibrium models to actual economic data and draw accurate conclusions.
Book Synopsis Tourism Impact Analyses by : Anan Wattanakuljarus
Download or read book Tourism Impact Analyses written by Anan Wattanakuljarus and published by VDM Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism is more and more popular as a part of development strategy in developing countries due to three main motivations: tourism contributes to economic growth; tourism improves income distribution; and tourism develops and enhances the clean environment. Do these expected merits from tourism happen in every developing country? Does tourism growth reduce income disparity of the nation? Is tourism development pro-poor growth? Is tourism growth a 'green' development strategy? What are the major factors that determine the direction and size of the expected virtues? The book examines these questions in the economy-wide economic and environmental perspectives using a computable general equilibrium model for the case of Thailand - a country that considerably depends on tourism sectors. The book shows that tourism growth is not especially pro-poor or pro-agriculture and that tourism growth comes with high water consumption and wastewater production at least in the case of Thailand. The book is directed towards tourism and environmental policymakers in low-income countries. It is also addressed to economic researchers in tourism, development, environment, agriculture, and international trade.
