Book excerpt: This book describes the geological setting of Iran throughout geological history, referring to paleogeography and general geodynamics. Also, all structural units, faults, tectonic phases and orogeny occurred in the geology of Iran have been evaluated. Magmatic and metamorphic rocks along with ophiolitic complexes have extensive outcrops in Iran, and these rocks with Precambrian age constitute its basement. Study and identification of such rocks not only throws light on the geodynamic issues of Iran but also helps in recognition of the mode of formation and evolution of the sedimentary basins located within various structural divisions of the country. Moreover, the majority of metallic and non-metallic mineral deposits are associated either directly or indirectly with magmatic, and at time metamorphic, rocks. In the Magmatism and Metamorphism parts, it is tried to thoroughly consider the various aspects of the igneous rocks, whether intrusive, extrusive or young volcanoes, from the point of view of petrography, geochemistry and geodynamics. In addition, the major intrusive bodies of Iran have been presented along with their petrologic and chronologic specifications in tables, mentioning the bibliographic resources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas presents five layers of information covering each (sub-) district of Iran, from Abadan to Zanjan: a geological map and report, a fault map and report, an airborne magnetic map, a satellite photo-map, and a map of the mineral distribution. In this Atlas, the Geological Survey of Iran has put together five informative layers providing a comprehensive view on the geology and mineral resources and reserves of the country. The atlas was published on occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Geological Survey of Iran (GSI). The economic flourishing of a country depends among others on infrastructural activities and on basic geographical and geological information. Civil engineering projects such as constructing huge structures (dam, power station, highway...) exploring and extracting minerals, reaching to underground water reservoirs, and the recognition and reduction of damages resulting from natural hazards directly or indirectly rely on geological information. In view of the present needs in long term planning and the important role that earth sciences play in this respect, it is necessary that scientists and stakeholders are provided with the latest information available. 1. Geological maps and reports: the previously available set of geological maps of Iran have been extended by almost 15.000 km2 in this volume. Each map with a scale of 1:250.000 covers an area of one degree latitude and 1.5 degrees longitude; the entire country area is covered by 134 sheets of maps. Of these 134 maps, nineteen oil-rich areas have been mapped by a national oil company, while the remaining 115 sheets have been created by the Geological Survey of Iran. Each map comes with a detailed report of the geological history and all processes which occurred since 540 million years ago in the studied area. Information include tectonics, mineral deposits, seismicity, and engineering instabilities and enable the user of the atlas to understand the geology in the area and thus to plan and perform related research, engineering, and disaster mitigation projects. 2. Fault maps with individual reports describe tectonic dynamics and structural results all detail. 3. Airborne magnetic maps show the total intensity of magnetic fields and lineaments and airborne magnetic masses between 1974-1977, according to GSI requirements; two steps of obtaining magneto-metric data were performed which cover the main part of Iran except sedimentary basins in the south and south west. 4. Satellite photo-maps. The Landsat satellite is the first satellite for geo-resources information which was designed and entered into orbit by the American Organization of Aviation and Space Travelling in 1972 and was presented with second and the third generations. 5. Mineral distribution

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continental margins of the world constitute the most impressive and largest physiographic feature of the earth's surface, and one of fundamentally great geological significance. Continental margins have been the subject of increasing attention in recent years, an interest focused by a body of new data that has provided new insights into their character. This interest was further stimulated by the realization that, in addition to the abundant living resources, continental margins contain petroleum and mineral resources that are accessible with existing technology. This realization, along with their basic geological importance, has provoked further research into the nature of continental margins throughout the world. A summary of these findings, as related to both recent and ancient continental margins, is the subject of this book. At various times in the past we had been approached individually to prepare a basic reference to continental margins; we then proposed to do such a volume jointly. However, the stimulus for the present volume eventually arose from a Penrose Conference arranged through the Geological Society of America. This conference was attended by specialists of numerous disciplines and from throughout the world, many of whom insisted that such a volume would be both timely and useful. Consequently, we agreed to undertake the task of assembling this book, with the objectives of making it available as soon and as inexpensively as possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the entire lithostratigraphy of Iran from the Proterozoic to recent. This unique book manages to elucidate the stratigraphy of Iran, after an exhausting and long-term process; the creation of a comprehensive stratigraphic framework required input from many Iranian specialist stratigraphers - a process which will be ongoing in the future. However, the main purpose of this work is to provide a concise summary of the state of the art of the lithostratigraphy for Iranian formations. The geology of the various sedimentary basins is described for each geological time period, together with the constituent lithostratigraphic units. The available stratigraphic data are summarized in tables, providing all relevant references. Finally, the book presents the spatial and temporal distribution of the various formations, together with their geographic locations, type sections and lithological composition.

Book excerpt: Humanity’s ever-increasing hunger for mineral raw materials, caused by a growing global population and ever increasing standards of living, has resulted in economic geology becoming a subject of urgent importance. This book provides a broad panorama of mineral deposits, covering their origin and geological characteristics, the principles of the search for ores and minerals, and the investigation of newly found deposits. Practical and environmental issues that arise during the life cycle of a mine and after its closure are addressed, with an emphasis on sustainable and "green" mining. The central scientific theme of the book is to place the extraordinary variability of mineral deposits in the frame of fundamental geological processes. The book is written for earth science students and practicing geologists worldwide. Professionals in administration, resource development, mining, mine reclamation, metallurgy, and mineral economics will also find the text valuable. Economic Geology is a fully revised translation of the the fifth edition of the German language text Mineralische und Energie-Rohstoffe. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a collection of papers that summarize current ideas and recent progress in the study of granite-related mineralization systems. They provide a combination of field, experimental and theoretical studies. Papers are grouped according to the main granite-related ore systems: granite-pegmatite, skarn and greisen-veins, porphyry, orogenic gold, intrusion-related, epithermal and porphyry-related gold and base metal, iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG), and special case studies. The studies provide a broad spread in terms of both space and time, highlighting granite-related ore deposits from Europe (Russia, Sweden, Croatia and Turkey), the Middle East (Iran), Asia (Japan and China) and South America (Brazil and Argentina) and spanning rocks from Palaeoproterozoic to Miocene in age.
