Book excerpt: This is the second of two high-level, data-rich volumes from the massive Smithsonian/MAB Biological Diversity Program documenting the latest findings on forest biodiversity. In original contributions, some three hundred scientists from over forty countries discuss socioeconomic aspects, ecological monitoring and assessment, forest dynamics, growth trends, dry forests, species richness of woody regeneration and of vascular plants, hurricane impact, tropical cloud forests, Landsat-TM satellite mapping, and quantitative ethnobotany. The book covers first the research and monitoring methodologies for the New World and then the results of individual research and integrated studies on all aspects of forest biodiversity in North and South America and the Caribbean.

Book excerpt: This study demonstrates on St. Croix forest is the primary land cover type and secondary forests are predominant forest type. The species composition of these forests is dynamic, but they tend to be dominated by exotic tree species and over 50 years of natural succession is insufficient time for secondary forest stands to advance beyond the earliest successional stages. These results can be applied to jump-start native forest succession and rehabilitate degraded secondary forests.

Book excerpt: After 20 years, 65 percent of the original stems survived, with an average d.b.h. growth rate of 0.07 cm year−1. Tree species abundances varied by topography and elevation within the watershed. In 1983, total aboveground biomass on all plots combined averaged 138.7 t ha−1; by 2003, it had declined by nearly 7 percent. In 1983, biomass was greatest on the summit, intermediate on slopes and valleys, and least on ridges; by 2003, the quantities for all sites had converged except on the summit plot. In 1992, total aboveground productivity was estimated at 10.64 t ha−1 year −1. Standing herbivory for leaves was 4.5 percent, and the herbivory rate was 4.6 percent per year. The standing crop of litter was 9.33 t ha−1. Hurricanes had a major impact on forest structure and species composition. The trees impacted (snapped, uprooted, or standing dead) by Hurricane Hugo totaled 210 ha−1 after 10 months and 288 ha−1 after 19 months.

Book excerpt: Most of the islands of the Caribbean have long histories of herpetological exploration and discovery, and even longer histories of human-mediated environmental degradation. Collectively, they constitute a major biodiversity hotspot – a region rich in endemic species that are threatened with extinction. This two-volume series documents the existing status of herpetofaunas (including sea turtles) of the Caribbean, and highlights conservation needs and efforts. Previous contributions to West Indian herpetology have focused on taxonomy, ecology and evolution, particularly of lizards. This series provides a unique and timely review of the status and conservation of all groups of amphibians and reptiles in the region. This volume provides regional accounts of the islands of the West Indies biogeographic region.
