Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russia's Gift to the World In any account of Russian literature, two kinds of it have to be considered which are historically separate, though the one to some extent grew out of and is founded upon the other. There is the early popular literature of tales, ballads, and poems which grew up among the people, was handed down by memory, and very often was not committed to writing at all until modern times. There is also the regular literature of books, which begins when language has been studied as an art and reduced to rules. This latter is the form which literature takes in modern times. In both forms the recox d of Russia is extraordinarily rich. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Russian Novel A few words as to the author himself might be of interest. The Vicomte E. Melchior de Vogue was bom at Nice on February 24, 1848. His mother was English - a Miss H. Anderson of renowned beauty. His ancestors, who took their part in the Crusades, were "seigneurs" in the Province of Vivarais (now the Departement of the Ardeche). De Vogue went through the War of 1870-71, was wounded at Sedan, and spent eight months as a prisoner in Magdeburg. On returning to France, he was decorated with the "Medaille Militaire" and was appointed attache to the French Embassy at Constantinople, where his cousin le Marquis de Vogue was Ambassador, and spent three years there and travelling about in the East. His first publication (1876) was entitled Syria, Palestine and Mount Athos. Appointed Secretary in 1877 to the Embassy at St. Petersburg, and there marrying the sister of General Annenkoff, of Transcaspian renown, he naturally took a great interest in Russia, studying its language and its people, in town and country, for five years. Leaving the diplomatic service at the time Marechal de MacMahon left the Elysees, he and his young Russian wife settled down in Paris. He then definitely took to literature. In 1886 he finished writing the present volume. The Russian Novel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
