Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sequel to the award-winning Stepping on the Cracks. “Sometimes heart-rending, sometimes funny, Gordy Smith will prove memorable to all who meet him.”—Booklist (starred review) In Following My Own Footsteps, sixth-grader Gordy Smith comes to grips with the fear that he’ll turn out no better than his abusive father . . . With his father now in jail and one brother hospitalized, Gordy’s mother has no choice but to take the family to their wealthy grandmother’s house in North Carolina. There Gordy meets William, a boy who had polio and is now wheelchair bound. Though they become friends, Gordy’s plans to help William fail spectacularly. Matters only get worse when Gordy’s father is released from prison and his mother is poised to give him a second chance. Gordy must decide where he belongs—with his dysfunctional parents or with the grandma who is more than his match in toughness, in courage, and in love. “A cast of unforgettable characters inhabit this work, seasoned with WW II setting but utterly contemporary in its concerns. Hahn is in top form, proving through Gordy’s first-person narration that real love can triumph over all kinds of adversity, and often does.”—Kirkus Reviews “The complex characterizations, period setting and Gordy’s brave attempts to break a cycle of violence will hold readers’ interest.”—Publishers Weekly “It’s a timeless social issue really, in any era, of having a dysfunctional abusive parent . . . A very good story showcasing complex friendships, familial relationships, and inner conflict, all set in WW2 America.”—Cats and Fiction

Book excerpt: The legend says that the Milky Way has been the path set by the Santiago Apostle since the Middle Ages, to guide pilgrims on the Camino until they reach his resting place. Indeed, the name of Compostela comes from Campus Stellae (a field of stars). In 2017, I had the opportunity to do the famous "Camino de Santiago" and, after walking over 850Km, I arrived. They were intense and moving 30 days, where I walked, laughed, and cried a lot. I met people from all over the world, but perhaps, the most important thing was that I got to know myself better. Without realising, it became an internal journey more than something external. During those days, I discovered how little I needed to be happy. Whoever had the possibility of doing the Camino and becoming a pilgrim, would surely understand. To all the rest, I hope with all my heart that this book moves you to do it. You will not regret it. Book excerpt: Kees Madden, a young writer steeped in film history, suddenly finds himself living in the Hollywood he always imagined existed just beyond the shadows, an alternate Hollywood of malicious ghosts and the famous phantoms of filmland's past. The city has the power to shift time and space and is capable of ironic response when confronted by Madden's overactive imagination. It is also the city's perverse pleasure to confront him with a diverse cadre of Hollywood ghosts. Although enthralled by this bizarre new world, Madden finds himself eager to escape, while the unseen forces behind Dead Hollywood have other plans. In pursuit of the city's boundaries and arcane secrets, Madden encounters three enigmatic humans: a clever, sinister man and two intriguing, beautiful women. As they lead him through a fantastic dream/maze of Hollywood past and present, Madden is severely tempted by the two ladies. Although they seem to be polar opposites, could Madden be capable of falling in love with them both? Or are they only malevolent ghosts, eager to imprison Madden in their depraved Hollywood hells? Peter Beckman grew up in the northern California town of Carmichael where, at age 11, he became an actor in local theatre and college productions. In his early twenties, he attended the California Institute of the Arts, where he studied screenwriting with legendary director Alexander Mackendrick ("The Man In The White Suit," "The Sweet Smell Of Success"). Beckman has also appeared in films as varied as "Echo Park," "C.H.U.D. II" and Orson Welles' still-unreleased masterwork, "The Other Side Of The Wind." Beckman lives in Los Angeles where, under the pseudonym Anthony Landor, he currently provides voices for many of the world's most popular videogames, including "Street Fighter IV" (Zangief) and "Dissidia: Final Fantasy" (Golbez). He can also be heard as the voice of General Wolf in the Sci-Fi Channel's hit anime series "Monster." Dead Hollywood is his first novel."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pelagia Harper, aka Valentine Lovelace, published her memoirs of her time in Draco, Texas and became an established writer-at least in her own mind. But when her father dies and her stepmother steals her royalties, she finds herself destitute. Also haunted. The ghost of her papa keeps popping up everywhere. When her father s old flame, Sasha Devine, offers her a way out of her poverty, Pelagia jumps on it before she knows what s involved. In 1897, the two ladies must travel North to the Klondike (the Wild West is a relative term as far as V. Lovelace is concerned) escorting the coffin of a man said to be Lost-Cause Lawson, a prospector. It turns out the man beneath the coffin lid is not as dead as he was supposed to be and somehow, Pelagia ends up being accused of murdering a Mountie. Apparently the sensible solution to that is to fake her own suicide. The upshot is that when she finally does arrive in Dawson City with Sasha, she is obliged to take employment as a dance hall girl and a flamenco dancer (Corazon, the Belle of Barcelone). Her boss seems nice though. Very sociable, especially with all of his new female employees. It isn t long before Pelagia learns that Vasily Vladovitch Bledinoff is giving the biting cold some competition. It isn t until her friend Captain Lomax receives a new book from England, written by a fellow named Bram Stoker, that she begins to get a clue what exactly is going on with the mode for black velvet neck bands the girls are all sporting. Then there s all of those really smart wolves, the threat of starvation and disease, and other strange and unusual wildlife. This book is about what life was like for a female artiste in Dawson City as it was during the Gold Rush-when everyone was there to strike it rich-except for the vampires, who were there for the night life.

Along with Molly and Mae, their two close friends from college, the women decide to reunite at a remote inn. But the second Elise sees Julie, she knows something is wrong—she’s emaciated, with sallow skin and odd appetites. And as the weekend unfurls, it becomes impossible to deny that the Julie who vanished two years ago is not the same Julie who came back. But then who—or what—is she?

Book excerpt: "The literary career of Uchida Hyakken (1889–1971) encompassed a wide variety of styles and genres, including fiction, zuihitsu (essays), war diaries, poetry, travelogues, and children’s stories. In discussing his oeuvre, critics have circumscribed Hyakken to a private literary realm detached from the era in which he wrote. Rachel DiNitto provides a critical corrective by locating in Hyakken’s simple yet powerful literary language a new way to appreciate the various literary reactions to the modernization of the early decades of the twentieth century and a means to open up a literary space of protest, an alternate intellectual response to the era of militarism. This book takes up Hyakken’s fiction and essays written during Japan’s prewar years to investigate the intersection of his literature with the material and discursive surroundings of the time: a consumer-oriented print culture; the popular entertainment of film; the capitalist and cultural force of an emergent middle class; a planned, yet sprawling metropolis; and the war machine of an expanding Japanese empire. Emerging from this analysis is a writer who relied on the quotidian language of the everyday and the symbols of cultural modernism to counter the harsh realities of modernization and imperialism and to express sentiments contrary to the mainstream ideological rhetoric of the time."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three mysteries in a beloved and acclaimed series featuring “one of the most enjoyable private eyes in crime fiction” (The Toronto Star). Benny Cooperman is a Canadian Jewish detective with flair, kinder and gentler than the average PI, and squeamish about violence. According to the New York Times: “In Benny Cooperman, the author has leavened the hard-boiled school of detective fiction with comedy and compassion. . . . Canada’s first and foremost private eye is well on his way to becoming a cherished national institution.” Donald E. Westlake adds: “Benny Cooperman is . . . a lot of fun to hang out with.” Collected here are the first three mysteries in the series by Howard Engel, “a born writer, a natural stylist . . . a writer who can bring a character to life in a few lines” (Ruth Rendell). The Suicide Murders: Myrna Yates shows up at Benny’s office asking him to check up on her husband, who she believes is having an affair. It seems like an open-and-shut case, until Benny finds out that the straying spouse has committed suicide. Still, something doesn’t add up: Chester Yates bought a ten-speed bicycle only two hours before he allegedly killed himself. The detective just may have a murder case on his hands, one in which the suspicions of a wife turn out to be much darker than anyone could have imagined. The Ransom Game: It’s February and Ontario is frozen—along with Benny’s private investigation business. That is, until Muriel Falkirk knocks on his door. Her boyfriend, Johnny Rosa, is missing. A decade earlier, Rosa had been involved in the kidnapping of an heiress. He was sent to prison and the ransom money was never recovered. Now Rosa’s out on parole, but he’s nowhere to be found—and it turns out Benny isn’t the only one on his trail. Murder on Location: Niagara Falls is crawling with Hollywood types who are making a movie. But Benny isn’t scouting for talent; he’s investigating the case of a woman named Billie Mason who’s gone missing from Benny’s hometown of Grantham, Ontario. Has she merely been bitten by the acting bug, or is a much more sinister force at play?
