Book Synopsis Race and British Colonialism in Southeast Asia, 1770-1870 by : Gareth Knapman
Download or read book Race and British Colonialism in Southeast Asia, 1770-1870 written by Gareth Knapman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of "race" played an increasing role in nineteenth-century British colonial thought. For most of the nineteenth century, John Crawfurd towered over British colonial policy in South-East Asia, being not only a colonial administrator, journalist and professional lobbyist, but also one of the key racial theorists in the British Empire. He approached colonialism as a radical liberal, proposing universal voting for all races in British colonies and believing all races should have equal legal rights. Yet at the same time, he also believed that races represented distinct species of people, who were unrelated. This book charts the development of Crawfurd’s ideas, from the brief but dramatic period of British rule in Java, to his political campaigns against James Brooke and British rule in Borneo. Central to Crawfurd’s political battles were the debates he had with his contemporaries, such as Stamford Raffles and William Marsden, over the importance of race and his broader challenge to universal ideas of history, which questioned the racial unity of humanity. The book taps into little explored manuscripts, newspapers and writings to uncover the complexity of a leading nineteenth-century political and racial thinker whose actions and ideas provide a new view of British liberal, colonial and racial thought.

Book Synopsis Histories of the Borneo Environment by : Reed L. Wadley
Download or read book Histories of the Borneo Environment written by Reed L. Wadley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the tremendous changes that have come to the island of Borneo in recent decades, this volume takes a detailed historical look at the Borneo environment from native, colonial and national perspectives. It examines change and continuity in the economic, political and social dimensions of human-environment interactions. Reflecting the increasingly multidisciplinary nature of environmental history, the book brings together an international group of historians, anthropologists, geographers and social foresters, all looking through a historical lens at the environment in the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, and the Indonesian province of Kalimantan and Brunei. Drawing on extensive archival research and fieldwork, these ten original contributions encompass eleven centuries of history on Borneo, examining interrelated topics that include long-distance trade, conservation, land tenure, resource access, property rights, perceptions of the environment, migration, and development policy and practice. The chapters in this volume are extensively revised versions of selected papers presented at an international seminar on "Environmental change in native and colonial histories of Borneo: Lessons from the past, prospects for the future" held in Leiden under the auspices of the International Institute for Asian Studies.
Book Synopsis Oceanic Encounters by : Margaret Jolly
Download or read book Oceanic Encounters written by Margaret Jolly and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the result of ongoing collaborations between Australian and French anthropologists, historians and linguists, explores encounters between Pacific peoples and foreigners during the longue durée of European exploration, colonisation and settlement from the sixteenth century to the twentieth century. It deploys the concept of `encounter¿ rather than the more common idea of `first contact¿ for several reasons. Encounters with Europeans occurred in the context of extensive prior encounters and exchanges between Pacific peoples, manifest in the distribution of languages and objects and in patterns of human settlement and movement. The concept of encounter highlights the mutuality in such meetings of bodies and minds, whereby preconceptions from both sides were brought into confrontation, dialogue, mutual influence and ultimately mutual transformation. It stresses not so much prior visions of `strangers¿ or `others¿ but the contingencies in events of encounter and how senses other than vision were crucial in shaping reciprocal appraisals. But a stress on mutual meanings and interdependent agencies in such cross-cultural encounters should not occlude the tumultuous misunderstandings, political contests and extreme violence which also characterised Indigenous-European interactions over this period.

Other chapters consider indigenous peoples and how different regimes have handled them. The book is published in honour of Victor T.
