Book excerpt: Configuring Romanticism focuses on the ways in which “Romanticism” continues to change shape in light of new discoveries, new readings, new approaches. To this end, some essays here gathered offer novel interpretations of Romantic “classics” such as Wordsworth, Blake, and Southey, or discuss the Celtic roots of Romanticism. Others address the relationship of Romantic literature, particularly the work of Scott, Shelley, and De Quincey, to issues of colonialism and imperialism. Yet others trace the “afterlife” of Romanticism and the Romantics, specifically Byron, Shelley, and Keats, in the writings of Leigh Hunt, Elizabeth Gaskell, James Thomson, Algernon Swinburne, William Michael Rosetti, James Clarence Mangan, Francis Parkman, Gilbert and Sullivan, and T.S. Eliot, as well as in Dutch nineteenth-century criticism. The volume closes with discussions of the Romantic aspects of World War II propaganda, twentieth-century translations of the Aeneid in view of Romantic principles, the Romantic face of recent Québecois fiction, and present-day film versions of Jane Austen’s Emma.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northern Irish poets have been notably reticent when addressing political issues in their work. In Sympathetic Ink, Shane Alcobia-Murphy traces that tendency through the works of Seamus Heaney, Paul Muldoon, and Medbh McGuckian. Using collections of the poets’ papers made only recently available, Alcobia-Murphy focuses on the oblique, subtle strategies they apply to critique contemporary political issues. He employs the concept of sympathetic ink, or invisible ink, arguing that rather than avoiding politics, these poets have, via complex intertextual references and resonances, woven them deeply into the formal construction of their works. Acute and learned, Sympathetic Ink will serve as a perfect introduction to these crucial figures of Irish poetry.

Book excerpt: The Poetic Plays Of Wordsworth, Coleridge And Southey Convey Both Assurance And Anxiety - Balancing And Counterpointing Each Other And The Object Of The Present Study Is To Show How This Balancing And Counter-Pointing Enrich The Texture Of Their Plays. Truly, Their Creative Energy Was Considerably Cramped By The Condi¬Tions Prevailing In The Contemporary Theatre, And It Is Also True That They Show An Inadequate Grasp Of Dramatic Art And Dramatic Dialogue; But What Is Remarkable In Their Dramatic Works Is Their Capacity To Seize And Analyse The Spiritual Dilemma Of The Age; Their Persistent Moral Ardour Exposes The Ailments And Iniquities Afflicting The Social Order And Also Questions And Scrutinizes The Possible Modes Of Freedom. In Fact, This Is Mainly A Study Of The Moral Concerns In The Plays Of The Three Elder English Romantic Poets Their Anxiety About The Mystery And Potency Of Evil And How To Com¬Bat It, The Issues Of Ends And Means That Have Disturbed The Sensitive Rebels Throughout Ages. The Embivalent Poetical Characters, Their Gravitation Towards Drama, Struggle For Stage Success, The Contem¬Porary Theatrical Condition, The Un-Realized Projects, The Dramatic And Stylistic Qualities, Literary Issues, Etc. Have Also Been Discussed Incidentally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed a growing fascination with the printed annotations accompanying eighteenth-century texts. Previous studies of annotation have revealed the margins as dynamic textual spaces both shaping and shaped by diverse aesthetic, historical, and political sensibilities. Yet previous studies have also been restricted to notes by or for canonical figures; they have neglected annotation’s relation to developments in reading audiences and the book trade; and they have overlooked the interaction, even tension, between prose notes and poetry, a tension reflecting eighteenth-century views of poetry as aesthetically superior to prose. Annotation in Eighteenth-Century Poetry addresses these oversights through a substantial introduction and eleven essays analyzing the printed endnotes and footnotes accompanying poems written or annotated between 1700 and 1830. Drawing on methods and critical developments in book history and print culture studies, this collection explores the functions that annotation performed on and through the printed page. By analyzing the annotation specific to poetry, these essays clarify the functions of notes among the other paratexts, including illustrations, by which scholars have mapped poetry’s relation to the expanding book trade and the class-specific production of different formats. Because the reading and writing of poetry boasted social and pedagogical functions that predate the rise of the note as a print technology, studying the relation of notes to poetry also reveals how the evolving layout of the eighteenth-century book wrought significant changes not only on reading practices and reception, but on the techniques that booksellers used to make new poems, steady-sellers, and antiquarian discoveries legible to new readers. Above all, analyzing notes in poetry volumes contributes to larger inquiries into canon formation and the rise of literary studies as a discipline in the eighteenth century.

Book excerpt: The ambivalent curiosity of the young poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) towards Plato - 'but I love Plato - his dear gorgeous nonsense!' - soon developed into a philosophical project, and the mature Coleridge proclaimed himself a reviver of Plato's unwritten or esoteric 'systems'. James Vigus's study traces Coleridge's discovery of a Plato marginalised in the universities, and examines his use of German sources on the 'divine philosopher', and his Platonic interpretation of Kant's epistemology. It compares Coleridge's figurations of poetic inspiration with models in the Platonic dialogues, and investigates whether Coleridge's esoteric 'system' of philosophy ultimately fulfilled the Republics notorious banishment of poetry.
