Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early History of Syria and Palestine In ancient Babylonian usage Suri, from which our name Syria is derived, meant Northern Mesopotamia and the adjacent districts of the Armenian and Taurus mountain chains. In Greek and Roman times it was limited eastward and northward and was extended southward, so that it came to denote the region between the Taurus, the Euphrates, the Syrian Desert, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. This application of the name has become traditional, but it does not commend itself to the historian of the ancient Orient. From time immemorial the northern half of this region has been peopled by different races from the southern half, and politically the two divisions have been independent until comparatively recently. For these reasons it is advisable to limit the name Syria to the territory between the Taurus and Mount Hermon, and to apply to the remaining portion of the East Mediterranean coast the name of Palestine. This name is due to a late Greek extension of the meaning of Philistia; we have, however, no ancient designation that covers the region so precisely. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syrian Stone-Lore: Or the Monumental History of Palestine The following chapters are meant to give a general idea Of the present state Of our information concerning the ancient condition Of a country which possesses peculiar interest as being the Holy Land Of the Jew, the Christian, and the Moslem alike. The limits of the country under consideration are the peninsula of Sinai on the south, and the Taurus Chain on the north, the Mediterranean on the west, and the desert on the east. It is clear, however, that the influence of surrounding nations in Egypt, Chaldea, and Asia Minor must always have been strongly felt in the long narrow line of sea-coast, generally known by the name of Syria towards the north and Of Palestine to the south; and it is intended in these pages to Show not only what can be gathered from the antiquities Of Syria itself concerning its ancient condition, but also how much light can now be obtained for the same purpose from the monumental remains of surrounding nations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt in Asia: A Plain Account of Pre-Biblical Syria and Palestine The present work is addressed to laymen and others, and purposes to give a plain account of the affairs of Syria and Palestine before the rise of Israel. Modern research in the East has greatly widened the outlook of history by the accumulation of documents relative to early and vanished ages of civilisation. Much of this material is intelligible or accessible only to special students. The general reading public is hardly aware that a continuous narrative Of times and peoples lately regarded as prehistorical, can now be restored from first-hand evidence. Yet in many passages such a narrative is full of intimate details and living interest. The importance of the period touched in the following pages needs no demonstration in respect to its bearing on the difficult questions of Scriptural interpreta tion. Of late years a claim not less weighty has been advanced for the culture of the ancient East, as the pre ponderating factor in the shaping of all other civilisations, including our own. An introductory chapter describes the physical features of Syria, and brings into relief the controlling effect of geographical conditions on the political fortunes of the land. There follows an account of the migrations, the conquests. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Today in Syria and Palestine A conscientious effort is made in this volume to describe the Holy Land, and the historical scenes of Syria as they appear to-day to the eyes of a newspaper reporter. It is not intended for theologians, but for ordinary people; and was prepared for publication to gratify many readers of The Chicago Record-Herald, who asked that the letters which appeared in its columns in the spring of 1901 might be preserved in permanent form. In company with Mr. and Mrs. William H. Baldwin of Washington, D. C., and my own family, I spent several weeks visiting the scenes identified with the life of our Savior, and the homes and haunts of the Patriarchs and Prophets of Scripture times. Such an experience brings them closer to you; gives them a vitality they do not have in books; and that, of course, is the greatest benefit of travel; and let me here record my humble testimony to the truth of the Scriptures. A journey through Palestine destroys many illusions, and disturbs one's confidence in mankind, and especially in many of the professional teachers of Christianity, but it confirms the faith of conscientious and thoughtful readers in the Bible and its teachings; for every spot fully described in its pages can be immediately and distinctly identified. This is an extraordinary fact. I know of no other book of which the same can be said. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oriental Encounters: Palestine and Syria (1894-5-6) Early in the year 1894 I was a candidate for one of two vacancies in the Consular Service for Turkey, Persia, and the Levant, but failed to gain the necessary place in the competitive examination. I was in despair. All my hopes for months had been turned towards sunny countries and old Civilisations, away from the drab monotone of London fog, which seemed a nightmare when the prospect Of escape eluded me. I was eighteen years Old, and, having failed in one or two adventures, I thought myself an all-round failure, and was much depressed. I dreamed Of Eastern sunshine, palm trees, camels, desert sand, as of a Paradise which I had lost by my shortcomings. What was my rapture when my mother one fine day suggested that it might be good for me to travel in the East, because my longing for it seemed to indicate a natural instinct, with which she herself, possessing Eastern memories, was in full sympathy!
