On examining them with the stereoscope, the great majority of readers will at once obtain the stereo scopic image. Some, however, may require a few minutes' practice to enable them to do this, and there may be a few in whom some visual abnormality prevents the appearance of the solid image. In these the correction of the ocular defect will enable them to obtain the stereoscopic picture. The stereoscopes (which will be found inserted into the cover) have been made by the firm of RI and J. Beck, and I am much indebted to them for the trouble they have taken in making them optically accurate and at the same time exactly suited for the purpose in view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of the Diseases of the Ear The justification for the appearance of an English edition Of this text-book will be at once admitted, both on the ground of the position of the author in regard to the specialty, and also from the universal recognition Of the value of his treatise by those acquainted with the original. The size of the book is somewhat lessened, although a few additions have been made, and no matter Of importance has been omitted; while the German text has been faithfully followed. Reference must be made to the exceptional excellence of the illustrations, and more especially to the coloured figures in the plates, which form indeed a complete atlas Of the appearances exhibited by the tympanic membrane in different pathological conditions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Ear It seems hardly possible to the author that a quarter of a century has elapsed since the appearance of the first edition of this work in 1894. Perhaps in no other branch of medicine or surgery have more advances been made than in Otology. Successive editions of this work have appeared from time to time, it having been the purpose of the author, as well as of the publishers, to keep the work fully abreast with the advance of modern medicine and surgery. Since the appearance of the last edition so much advance has been made in diseases of the labyrinth, and the great importance of labyrinthine lesions has been so fully recognized that it has seemed necessary to elaborate upon this portion of the work. For this reason an entirely new chapter on the functional testing of the static labyrinth has been added. This chapter has been fully illustrated by line drawings, and it is the hope of the author that this additional chapter may be of great practical value to his readers. The chapter on specific inflammation of the labyrinth has also been practically rewritten, so as to give the readers the advantages of the latest methods of treatment. One plate has been added, but aside from this the body of the work remains essentially the same. Lithographic plates 9, 10, and 11 have been omitted from this edition. Plate 11 was practically out of date, and plates 9 and 10, while beautiful specimens of the lithographer's art, and reflecting great credit upon my friend, Dr. W. A. Holden, who was kind enough to draw these plates from nature, do not seem to possess enough practical value to warrant their continuance in this last edition. One new plate, which has appeared in an article by the author subsequent to the publication of the last edition, is embodied in this volume. Certain changes have been made in the text where experience has made it necessary for the author to modify opinions previously held. Certain statistics have been changed also so as to include the experience of the last ten years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Ear: Illustrated by Clinical Observations The methods of observation of diseases of the ear, as well as the optical, acoustic, and other instruments employed in their diagnosis, have been very much improved within the last ten years. Such improvements are of great practical importance; this branch of the healing art having been long retarded, or kept in its primary, or empirical state, for want of thatguiding light which can only be supplied by an established and scientific pathology. With the advance of aural pathology, and the improved methods of diagnosis, the rational treatment of diseases of the car has been gra dually developed, while the various nostrums, chiefly of the stimulating kind, which were for merly dropped into the ear for the cure of all kinds of deafness, and this without distinction, are gradually disappearing: this disappearance, however, is slow, for. Ideas that have prevailed for centuries, and which, even for centuries, have been fraught with mischief, are not to be got rid of except by the gradual advance of knowledge, and require, too often, as well, the departure of one or more generations of men, who fondly cling to the remembrance and results of their early impressions, without taking the trouble to see in how many aspects they are erroneous, or in how many applications they do harm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ear: Its Anatomy, Physiology, and Diseases; A Practical Treatise for the Use of Medical Students and Practitioners IN view of the great advances which have been made of late years in Otology, and of the increasing interest manifested in it, the Author has felt that the profession might welcome a new work, which should present clearly but concisely its present aspect, and should indicate the direction in which further researches can be most profitably carried on. Such a work it has been the Author's aim to produce, and in accomplishing the task it will be seen that he has freely availed himself of the observations and discoveries of others. These he has, as far as practicable, tested by his own experience in the Opportunities afforded by several years' special devotion to the study of the diseases of the ear. Considerable practice in teaching has shown him that the pathology and therapeutics of the ear cannot be properly under stood without a more intimate acquaintance with its anatomy and physiology than is afforded by the ordinary text-books. In these departments much important work has recently been done abroad, especially in Germany, and the author is confident that the space which he has devoted to their consideration will not be considered as excessive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of the Ear, and Their Treatment In preparing this work I have endeavoured to give a concise account of the Diseases of the Ear and their Treatment, along with an epitome of all that is of value to general practitioners who may undertake the treatment of these diseases. For special study, the text-books of Von Troltsch, Politzer, Urbantschitsch, and Gruber may be mentioned, to which also reference may be made for the original literature of the subject. In order to make the book as acceptable as possible I have omitted, or only indicated, whatever is still hypothetical, and not in accordance with the compact and practical character of the work. I have departed from my original intention of dispensing with Anatomy, and have placed a short anatomical sketch at the beginning of each Chapter, where it appeared necessary, for the purpose of enabling the reader to appreciate the pathological conditions. For the descriptive anatomy and embryology of the Ear reference may be made to the text-books already mentioned, and to works on Anatomy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Lessons in Nursing: Diseases and Injuries of the Ear, Their Prevention and Cure IN the following pages the author has endeavored to present the important subject of Diseases and Injuries of the Ear, in a form free from technical terms, so that it may be understood by any one. This plain description of ear-diseases, it is hoped, will enable many to avoid them by care, or, if cou tracted, will aid in recognizing their nature and thus prevent experimental and erroneous forms of treat ment so much in vogue, and which usually do more harm than good. The aim also has been to Show the inexpert What to avoid in the treatment of ear diseases, rather than what they may try to do for their relief. In this way it is believed the general reader can be best warned against error in treatment, and the hearing saved. If this little book can show how to take care of the ears and avoid disease in them, or, if' they are diseased, how to escape the evils of improper treat ment, the author's Object will be fully attained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diseases of the Ear: Their Diagnosis and Treatment; A d104-Book of Aural Surgery in the Form of Academical Lectures The work of presenting to the American Medical public a new book on the Diseases of the Ear, was undertaken, because it was believed that there existed a need for it. The most prominent of the d104-Books, which have obtained a circulation in the United States, are those of Kramer, of Berlin, Itard and Meniere, of Paris, Toynbee and Wilde, respectively of London and Dublin. The works of the latter named, and especially that of Wilde, have found the most favor. Wilde's book has been out of print for some time, and there is no immediate prospect of a new edition. This is to be regretted, for probably no book has done so much for the advancement of its object as this production of a distinguished aural and ophthalmic surgeon. Toynbee has achieved so much for the only basis of all scientific and real progress in aural surgery, pathological anatomy, that we can but be grateful to him, although his book, rich in materials, seems to lack many of the requirements of a text-book for the general practitioner. Kramer's work was translated years ago, and we are indebted to it as being one of the successful pioneers in the way, now comparatively well trodden. Since then the authors views have been very much modified, and the last edition, "Die Ohrenheilkunde der Gegenwart, Berlin, 1862," lately translated under the auspices of the New Sydenham Society, would hardly be recognized as a lineal descendant of the first. This testifies at once to the honesty of, and progress in, the author's opinions. Through the extreme courtesy of Dr. Kramer, while in Berlin, I had the opportunity of seeing a good deal of his large private practice, and the pleasure of hearing his peculiar views at some length. I also saw somewhat of the practice of Dr. Erhard, Aural Surgeon and Lecturer in the University of Berlin, author of "Kli nische Otiatrie, Berlin, 1863."
