The reader will gain a deeper knowledge of LIS theory and learn about the theoretical and empirical challenges of studying the LIS from a relational perspective. The book also provides an analytical framework to explore the level of connectivity among LIS actors through the use of social network analysis (network architecture) and second, to assess the variety of different types of relationships that local actors put in place to produce innovation within the LIS (network portfolio). More specifically, this book explores which network configuration is associated with a successful LIS by deriving evidence from the empirical study of the biopharma LIS in the Greater Boston Area (GBA), which has been exemplified as a benchmark case in terms of successful LIS performance. This book also contributes to the theoretical debate about the optimal configuration of network structure (e.g. network closure vs. network openness). In capturing the heterogeneous nature of the LIS demography, it addresses the challenges brought about by the adoption of a holistic approach. Modern innovation research is challenged by the need to incorporate knowledge generation and dissemination processes into the analysis so as to disentangle the complexity of these dynamic processes. With innovation, however, strong uncertainty, nonlinearities and actor heterogeneity become central factors that are at odds with traditional modeling techniques anchored in equilibrium and homogeneity. This text introduces SKIN (Simulation Knowledge Dynamics in Innovation Networks), an agent-based simulation model that primarily focuses on joint knowledge creation and exchange of knowledge in innovation co‐operations and networks. In this context, knowledge is explicitly modeled and not approximated by, for instance, the level of accumulated R&D investment. The SKIN approach supports applications in different domains ranging from sector-based research activities in knowledge-intensive industries to the activities of international research consortia engaged in basic and applied research. Following a general description of the SKIN model, several applications and modifications are presented. Each chapter introduces in detail the structure of the model, the relevant methodological considerations and the analysis of simulation results, while options for empirically validating the models’ structure and outcomes are also discussed. The book considers the scope of further applications and outlines prospects for the development of joint modeling strategies.

It is also important to examine power dynamics as variation in the relative positions of firms in an exchange network is one of the main causes capable of transforming the distribution of power and the very structure of interfirm networks. Using recent theoretical and methodological advances in studies of complex systems, we show that the interfirm alliance network of one of the fastest growing sector of the biopharmaceutical industry - the antibody sector- continually changes from 1998-2007 and evolves from a scale-free to a small-world structure. These very different network structures also epitomize distinctive power structures led by either fittest firms (novel highly innovative firms), or richest firms (incumbents). Our unique finding that scale-free as well as small-world structures can emerge in the life cycle of an industry major sector, and thus that networks can switch from one 'universal' structure to another, gives new insight into complex network dynamics and a baseline for constructing future models of interfirm network evolution and dynamics, taking into account structure and firms' position.

The first part focuses on the analysis of the technological, institutional and strategic context within which take place the contemporary forms of inter-firm relations. The second part examines the reasons why the different theoretical approaches of the firm fail to provide a satisfactory analytical articulation of two the notions of competition and cooperation characterising the interactions between firms. Finally, the third part, which represents the core of this paper, is centred on the analysis of the different combinations of inter-firm modalities of interaction within the contemporary competitive dynamics. We first show why cooperation involves a large set of arrangements within a continuum of inter-firm relations which are constantly combining the three logics of more or less intensive rivalry, of integration, and of the search of collective solutions. We then show why the coalitions and networks of firms comprise original and specific forms for the structuring of inter-firm relations. Finally, we show why the formation of coalitions and the networking organisation are phenomena which appear to be consubstantial with the very notion of competition, and therefore deserve a full place in the present renewal of the "Economy of the Firm"

Book excerpt: The objective of this paper is to analyse the characteristics and nature of the networks that firms utilize to access knowledge and facilitate innovation. The paper draws on the notion of network resources, distinguishing two types: social capital-consisting of the social relations and networks held by individuals; and network capital-consisting of the strategic and calculative relations and networks held by firms. The methodological approach consists of a quantitative analysis of data from a survey of firms operating in knowledge-intensive sectors of activity. The key findings include: social capital investment is more prevalent among firms frequently interacting with actors from within their own region; social capital investment is related to the size of firms; firm size plays a role in knowledge network patterns; and network dynamism is an important source of innovation. Overall, firms investing more in the development of their inter-firm and other external knowledge networks enjoy higher levels of innovation. It is suggested that an over-reliance on social capital forms of network resource investment may hinder the capability of firms to manage their knowledge networks. It is concluded that the link between a dynamic inter-firm network environment and innovation provides an alternative thesis to that advocating the advantage of network stability.
