Book excerpt: In the last two decades impressive advances have been made toward the understanding and quantitative description of the kinetics. Despite these advances, however, the use of mathematical modelling of gas-solid catalytic reactors in industry is still limited. By consolidating progress in the understanding of catalytic processes, this book applies these fundamental advances to the development of models for design, simulation and optimization of industrial reactors. Paying particular attention to the verification of the developed models against industrial data, these models are used to optimize the performance of many practical reactor cases. Using a systems approach for the development of the different components and the resulting overall models, the book is easy to read and gives an insight into the behaviour of these complex industrial systems. In addition, the practical relevance of bifurcation, instability and chaos to industrial reactors is briefly discussed.

Two important items of these processes are the development of the catalyst itself and the design and optimization of the reactor. Both aspects would benefit from rigorous and accurate kinetic modeling, based upon information on the working catalyst gained from classical steady state experimentation, but also from studies using surface science techniques, from quantum chemical calculations providing more insight into possible reaction pathways and from transient experimentation dealing with reactions and reactors. This information is seldom combined into a kinetic model and into a quantitative description of the process. Generally the catalytic aspects are dealt with by chemists and by physicists, while the chemical engineers are called upon for mechanical aspects of the reactor design and its control. The symposium "Dynamics of Surfaces and Reaction Kinetics in Heterogeneous Catalysis" aims at illustrating a more global and concerted approach through a number of prestigious keynote lectures and severely screened oral and poster presentations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a longstanding gap for graduate courses in the field, Chemical Reaction Engineering: Beyond the Fundamentals covers basic concepts as well as complexities of chemical reaction engineering, including novel techniques for process intensification. The book is divided into three parts: Fundamentals Revisited, Building on Fundamentals, and Beyond the Fundamentals. Part I: Fundamentals Revisited reviews the salient features of an undergraduate course, introducing concepts essential to reactor design, such as mixing, unsteady-state operations, multiple steady states, and complex reactions. Part II: Building on Fundamentals is devoted to "skill building," particularly in the area of catalysis and catalytic reactions. It covers chemical thermodynamics, emphasizing the thermodynamics of adsorption and complex reactions; the fundamentals of chemical kinetics, with special emphasis on microkinetic analysis; and heat and mass transfer effects in catalysis, including transport between phases, transfer across interfaces, and effects of external heat and mass transfer. It also contains a chapter that provides readers with tools for making accurate kinetic measurements and analyzing the data obtained. Part III: Beyond the Fundamentals presents material not commonly covered in textbooks, addressing aspects of reactors involving more than one phase. It discusses solid catalyzed fluid-phase reactions in fixed-bed and fluidized-bed reactors, gas–solid noncatalytic reactions, reactions involving at least one liquid phase (gas–liquid and liquid–liquid), and multiphase reactions. This section also describes membrane-assisted reactor engineering, combo reactors, homogeneous catalysis, and phase-transfer catalysis. The final chapter provides a perspective on future trends in reaction engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various aspects of the behaviour of fixed bed reactors supporting highly exothermic reactions, relevant to stable -optimal design and control, have been studied using detailed mathematical models. In order to establish the form of the simplest basic structure, two methods of describing radial heat transfer in two dimensional packed beds have been examined. It is shown that a lumped parameter single phase heat transfer model which implicitly incorporates the heterogeneous structure can account not only for the radial heat flux associated with both the fluid and solid phases but is also the more appropriate formulation since it allows the important reaction rate limitations due to intraparticle mass transfer to be properly estimated. Using this two dimensional, heterogeneous dynamic model of the reactor it has been possible to evaluate a simpler one dimensional formulation. It is shown that the latter gives an adequate-description of the dynamic behaviour of the system, provided that the overall heat transfer coefficient between the fluid and the coolant is suitably defined, and may, therefore, be used for general studies of reactor performance. Consideration has been-given to the response of the reactor to sinusoidal perturbations of the inlet conditions. It has been found that at certain frequencies of oscillation temperature runaway may develop before a safe quasi-stationary state is reached. A detailed examination of this behaviour has shown that in addition to the non-linear effects the difference in the speeds of propagation of the concentration and temperature waves along the reactor as a result of the heterogeneity of the system is also very significant. The effect of both cocurrent and countercurrent cooling of a single reactor tube has been examined. The behaviour for perturbations in coolant temperature is similar to that for inlet temperature and indicates potential difficulties in the design of control systems. A mathematical model of a multitubular reactor with crossflow cooling has been developed and used to identify some of the problems which may arise in these systems. In particular, considerable interaction between the individual reactor tubes occurs when significant conversion of the reactant takes place. This causes tubes in different parts of the bundle to exhibit different behaviour and with countercurrent cooling this may give rise to multiple steady states due to the feedback of heat within the system. A technique has been developed for predicting regions of parametric sensitivity and temperature runaway in heterogeneous fixed bed reactors. The relationship between this form of instability and that due to multiple states of the catalyst pellet has been demonstrated. Application of this method to both the design and control of a reactor is discussed and it is shown that it provides an insight as to the behaviour of the system since it makes possible the establishment of a relationship between local and global reactor stability and the operating variables.

Book excerpt: Reaction Kinetics and the Development and Operation of Catalytic Processes is a trendsetter. The Keynote Lectures have been authored by top scientists and cover a broad range of topics like fundamental aspects of surface chemistry, in particular dynamics and spillover, the modeling of reaction mechanisms, with special focus on the importance of transient experimentation and the application of kinetics in reactor design. Fundamental and applied kinetic studies are well represented. More than half of these deal with transient kinetics, a new trend made possible by recent sophisticated experimental equipment and the awareness that transient experimentation provides more information and insight into the microphenomena occurring on the catalyst surface than steady state techniques. The trend is not limited to purely kinetic studies since the great majority of the papers dealing with reactors also focus on transients and even deliberate transient operation. It is to be expected that this trend will continue and amplify as the community becomes more aware of the predictive potential of fundamental kinetics when combined with detailed realistic modeling of the reactor operation.

Book excerpt: Kinetics and reactor modeling for heterogeneous catalytic reactions are prominent tools for investigating and understanding catalyst functionalities at nanoscale and the related rates of complex reaction networks. This book illustrates some examples related to the transformation of simple to more complex feedstocks, including different types of reactor designs, i.e., steady-state, transient plug flow reactors, and TAP reactors for which there is sometimes a strong gap in the operating conditions from ultra-high-vacuum to high-pressure conditions. In conjunction, new methodologies have emerged, giving rise to more robust microkinetics models. As exemplified, they include the kinetics and the dynamics of the reactors and span a large range of length and time scales. The objective of this Special Issue is to provide contributions that can illustrate recent advances and novel methodologies for elucidating the kinetics of heterogeneous reactions and the necessary multiscale approach for optimizing the reactor design. This book is dedicated to postgraduate and scientific researchers, and experts in heterogeneous catalysis. It may also serve as a source of original information for the elaboration of lessons on catalysis for Master students.

Book excerpt: This book puts forward the concept of the Diameter-Transformed Fluidized Bed (DTFB): a fluidized bed characterized by the coexistence of multiple flow regimes and reaction zones, achieved by transforming the bed into several sections of different diameters. It reviews fundamental aspects, including computational fluid dynamics simulations and industrial practices in connection with DTFB. In particular, it highlights an example concerning the development of maximizing iso-paraffins (MIP) reactors for regulating complex, fluid catalytic cracking reactions in petroleum refineries. The book is a must-have for understanding how academic and industrial researchers are now collaborating in order to develop novel catalytic processes.
