Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of Project 3.2 was to evaluate the effect of a 500-ton, TNT, surface burst on small, buried, reinforced concrete arch structures. These structures were of such size that they could be tested in laboratory nuclear simulation devices. Nine structures were tested. Three 30-inch-diameter structures with a 4-inch-thick section buried in dry sand to a depth equal to one-fourth the diameter of the arch were located at the 100-, 200-, and 300-psi predicted ground-surface air overpressure levels. Based upon conventional design theory these structures which had tied-independent footings were predicted to fail at overpressures above 200 psi and to move vertically 1 inch. Six semicircular, 12-inch-diameter, unreinforced concrete arch structures with solid base slabs were designed for and placed at the 150-psi predicted ground-surface air overpressure level. Three structures were placed in dry dense sand and three in saturated sand. The three 30-inch structures were subjected to actual air overpressures of 105, 160, and 320 psi and were damaged only slightly. The structure at the greatest range appeared to have suffered greater flexural damage than the closer-in structures. The 12-inch structures were damaged appreciably by ejecta. Generally, the structures responded in a similar manner. In all cases the blast side moved vertically downward, causing an overturning effect. It was concluded that the design techniques used are apparently conservative. (Author).

Book excerpt: A study was made of the effectiveness of the surrounding soil in restraining the lateral movement of shallow-buried arches subjected to blast overpres ures from a nuclear explosion. The theory is developed for parabolic arches with circular or barrel arches included as a special case. It can be pplied equally well to arches oriented with their longitudinal axes perpendicular to or parallel to the direction of travel of the blast wave. The arch is considered to be buried near the surface of a semi-infinite soil mass. The depth of cover over the crown is limited to one-half of the arch span. The twohinged rather than the fixed arch is selected as representing more closely the shallow-buried rch structures used in full-scale nuclear tests to date. While these structures were not actually pinned at the arch abutments, their behavior under blast loading appears to resemble more closely the pinned th n the fixed case. he principal variables studied in the numerical examples include: (1) depth of cover, (2) overpressure loading, (3) arch material, and (4) arch span. The method of analysis was formulated by considering the arch ring as a discrete model consisting of a finite number of nodes (flexible joints) connected by rigid bars initially of equal length. The results of laboratory and field tests on 1/4.5- and 1/2-scale models, respectively, of an arch structure are compared with predictions made using the analysis. Arch internal loads, footing motions, and free-field motions are compared with those predicted by the analysis and compare favorably. The analytical technique was used to predict the response of the prototype structure to a 140-psi air overpressure loading resulting from the detonation of 10-kt, 100-kt, and 1-Mt weapons, to a 100-psi air overpressure for a 1-Mt weapon, and to the Operation Prairie Flat (500-ton TNT) 140-psi overpressure and the predicted response was compared with that assumed in designing the structure. The method of analysis developed is recommended whenever a significant cost savings can be realized because a number of structures are to be constructed or when local soil conditions make design by cruder methods uncertain. One study has been analytical in nature and the other experimental in nature. In the analytical work a computer code has been developed which employs an original finite element method for determining both static and dynamic responses of the soil-structure system of interest. Behavior beyond the linear range is provided for in the code. The code is quite general and should also be useful in analyzing a variety of other structures and the user's manual is present in Volume 2 of this report. The experimental work has consisted of laboratory tests on one-third scale models of the actual 18-foot-radius prototype arches. Both bare and soil-covered arches subjected to static as well as dynamic loads have been considered in the laboratory tests. The primary purpose of the experimental study has been to verify the solutions obtained from the computer code, so that the code can be used with maximum confidence for future studies of various parameters that are involved in the response of the arch.
