Book Synopsis Religion, Language, and the Human Mind by : Paul Chilton
Download or read book Religion, Language, and the Human Mind written by Paul Chilton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is religion? How does it work? Many natural abilities of the human mind are involved, and crucial among them is the ability to use language. This volume brings together research from linguistics, cognitive science and neuroscience, as well as from religious studies, to understand the phenomena of religion as a distinctly human enterprise. The book is divided into three parts, each part preceded by a full introductory chapter by the editors that discusses modern scientific approaches to religion and the application of modern linguistics, particularly cognitive linguistics and pragmatics. Part I surveys the development of modern studies of religious language and the diverse disciplinary strands that have emerged. Beginning with descriptive approaches to religious language and the problem of describing religious concepts across languages, chapters introduce the turn to cognition in linguistics and also in theology, and explore the brain's contrasting capacities, in particular its capacity for language and metaphor. Part II continues the discussion of metaphor - the natural ability by which humans draw on basic knowledge of the world in order to explore abstractions and intangibles. Specialists in particular religions apply conceptual metaphor theory in various ways, covering several major religious traditions-Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. Part III seeks to open up new horizons for cognitive-linguistic research on religion, looking beyond written texts to the ways in which language is integrated with other modalities, including ritual, religious art, and religious electronic media. Chapters in Part III introduce readers to a range of technical instruments that have been developed within cognitive linguistics and discourse analysis in recent years. What unfolds ultimately is the idea that the embodied cognition of humans is the basis not only of their languages, but also of their religions.
Book Synopsis New Approaches to the Study of Religion: Regional, critical, and historical approaches by : Peter Antes
Download or read book New Approaches to the Study of Religion: Regional, critical, and historical approaches written by Peter Antes and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2004 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationally recognized scholars from many parts of the world provide a critical survey of recent developments and achievements in the global field of religious studies. The work follows in the footsteps of two former publications: Classical Approaches to the Study of Religion, edited by Jacques Waardenburg (1973), and Contemporary Approaches to the Study of Religion, edited by Frank Whaling (1984/85). New Approaches to the Study of Religion completes the survey of the comparative study of religion in the twentieth century by focussing on the past two decades. Many of the chapters, however, are also pathbreaking and point the way to future approaches.
Book Synopsis Strategies for Cultural Assimilation of Immigrants and Their Children: Social, Economic, and Political Considerations by : Chandan, Harish Chandra
Download or read book Strategies for Cultural Assimilation of Immigrants and Their Children: Social, Economic, and Political Considerations written by Chandan, Harish Chandra and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When immigrants leave their home country to live in a host country that has a different culture, the acculturation process begins. There is subtle cultural, social, and political pressure on immigrants to adopt the cultural values of the host nation. The acculturation process occurs over time. Exposure to a new culture is often stressful, as one is exposed to new values, beliefs, and behaviors that may be different from their home culture. Strategies for Cultural Assimilation of Immigrants and Their Children: Social, Economic, and Political Considerations increases awareness of the cultural assimilation process among parents, children, employers, and educators. This book discusses internal conflicts and promotes harmony and understanding. Covering topics such as civic literacy, mental health, and identity formations, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for sociologists, psychologists, government officials, educators and administrators of both K-12 and higher education, students of higher education, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

Book Synopsis On Making a Shift in the Study of Religion and Other Essays by : Russell T. McCutcheon
Download or read book On Making a Shift in the Study of Religion and Other Essays written by Russell T. McCutcheon and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many would today argue that the onetime dominance of the phenomenology of religion has receded, and with it the traditional approach to studying religion as a unique and deeply-felt experience that defies explanation, the essays collected here take quite the opposite stand: that this approach has merely been re-branded and continues to characterize much work being done in the field today. Offering a different way forward—one that is based on experiences gained by the members of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama, a program that has successfully reinvented itself over the past 20 years—the book includes a variety of practical suggestions for how members of Religious Studies departments can revise their approach to studying and teaching about religion. Seeing religion instead as mundane but always exemplary of basic social elements found all across cultures, the volume argues that the way forward for this field lies not in the specialness of its object of study but, instead, the fact that thinking and acting as if something is special is itself an ordinary aspect of history and culture. Making just this shift helps the scholar of religion to contribute to wide, interdisciplinary conversations all across the Humanities and Social Sciences, demonstrating the practical relevance of their work.
Download or read book Being in Religion written by Asle Eikrem and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2013 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asle Eikrem strives to develop a systematic philosophical understanding of the constitutive structures of religious discourses. Different philosophical traditions (phenomenology, hermeneutics, pragmatics, metaphysics or analytical philosophical thinking) have articulated these structures in their own distinctive ways. The author aims to show how insights from partly conflicting traditions can be coherently reconstructed within the framework of a comprehensive philosophical presentation. The central thesis guiding his work is inspired by the deep-metaphysics of German philosopher Lorenz B. Puntel, and states that the relation between the pragmatic, semantic and ontological structures of religious discourses must be understood as internally necessary. They cannot be thought independently from each other. The pragmatic and semantic structures of religious discourses must be understood as substructures in a comprehensive ontological dimension (Being) that is characterized as practicable and expressible.
Book Synopsis Stardom: Discussions on Fame and Celebrity Culture by : Katarzyna Bronk
Download or read book Stardom: Discussions on Fame and Celebrity Culture written by Katarzyna Bronk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2012. Celebrity culture has received serious scholarly attention in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. As the concepts of fame, stardom, and popularity are no longer of interest to tabloids only, the phenomenon of celebrity has been studied, among others, by historians, literary critics, anthropologists, sociologists, psychologists, philosophers and economists. Scholars included in this volume discuss the various shades of fame and celebrity-hood from historical, sociological and theoretical perspectives. Stardom: Discussions on Fame and Celebrity Culture critically comment on the ways of producing and consuming fame, the cult of personality (deserved or underserved) and the question of gender in celebrity culture. Ultimately the post-conference volume attempts to answer the fundamental question of what constitutes and entails being a ‘celebrity.’
