Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secretions of the exocrine pancreas provide for digestion of a meal into components that are then available for processing and absorption by the intestinal epithelium. Without the exocrine pancreas, malabsorption and malnutrition result. This chapter describes the cellular participants responsible for the secretion of digestive enzymes and fluid that in combination provide a pancreatic secretion that accomplishes the digestive functions of the gland. Key cellular participants, the acinar cell and the duct cell, are responsible for digestive enzyme and fluid secretion, respectively, of the exocrine pancreas. This chapter describes the neurohumoral pathways that mediate the pancreatic response to a meal as well as details of the cellular mechanisms that are necessary for the organ responses, including protein synthesis and transport and ion transports, and the regulation of these responses by intracellular signaling systems. Examples of pancreatic diseases resulting from dysfunction in cellular mechanisms provide emphasis of the importance of the normal physiologic mechanisms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its focus on narrow band imaging, this book is an excellent reference for new as well as experienced practitioners in the field of endoscopy. Narrow band imaging has brought about a revolutionary improvement in diagnostic endoscopy, enabling objective diagnosis and precise detection of lesions. It has enhanced the capability of endoscopy to facilitate qualitative diagnoses for the great benefit of patients who undergo endoscopic examinations. However, a standardized system of classification has not yet been established and many clinicians and researchers are not yet highly skilled in utilizing the technique or interpreting the images that are produced. This atlas addresses those issues, providing clear, simple and easy-to-understand descriptions illustrated with generous use of endoscopic images.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This atlas demonstrates all components of the body through imaging, in much the same way that a geographical atlas demonstrates components of the world. Each body system and organ is imaged in every plane using all relevant modalities, allowing the reader to gain knowledge of density and signal intensity. Areas and methods not usually featured in imaging atlases are addressed, including the cranial nerve pathways, white matter tractography, and pediatric imaging. As the emphasis is very much on high-quality images with detailed labeling, there is no significant written component; however, ‘pearl boxes’ are scattered throughout the book to provide the reader with greater insight. This atlas will be an invaluable aid to students and clinicians with a radiological image in hand, as it will enable them to look up an exact replica and identify the anatomical components. The message to the reader is: Choose an organ, read the ‘map,’ and enjoy the journey!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When established four years ago, the scope of this international series in electron microscopy essentially was to provide an opportunity for the pUblication of selected review contributions by specialists in ultrastructural research. Previous volumes presented over the last three years have focused on special topics of present interest in ~'ontemporary biomedicine such as endocrine cells, reproduction, and connective tissues. In these fielCls, in fact, integrated methods of electron microscopy have contributed much to generate new ideas and concepts of general value in both basic and clinical applications. The Ultrastructure of the Digestive Tract basically follows the same guidelines and style of the other books in the series and is an invited collection of selected contributions of authors from various laboratories active in the field of electron microscopy. Therefore, although the various chapters consist of individual topics, they nevertheless should be considered as interrelated contributions of specific subjects in the field. The idea was to have critical reviews of aspects previously published elsewhere by experts in the field who, as a rule, include other relevant information in their articles in order to update and enrich the subject. This book contains fifteen chapters by renowned electron microscopists. Each chapter, according to the policy of the editors, reviews a particular topic in great detail, providing updated information, study methods and results, authors' ideas on future investigative approaches, and possible guidelines for forthcoming work. We hope that this book will be useful to cell biologists, morphologists, physiologists, and pathologists.

This term implies that the mortality rates increase substantially if efficient care is not provided within 60 minutes after the trauma. This book is intended as a practical manual in Trauma Care within the context of the golden hour, addressing all trauma types and all body parts. Readers will find essential decision-making algorithms and protocols with commentary for traumas, along with easily accessible information on how to treat patients in a very practical and handy fashion. Furthermore, the content is presented in a didactic way suitable for a wide audience, from medical students who want to learn about the basics of trauma care to experienced surgeons seeking a comprehensive guide to trauma-related interventions. The book combines contributions from experts at two renowned Trauma Centers, the Hospital do Trabalhador at Curitiba, Brazil, and the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, USA. Therefore, considering the different local environments and resources, the book provides distinct perspectives for several injuries, presenting the state of the art in Trauma Care. The diversity of perspectives in this book contributes to a global health care approach suitable for trauma-related events from developed countries to remote areas. The Trauma Golden Hour – A Practical Guide celebrates the Centennial Anniversary of the Federal University of Parana (Brazil), the 25th Anniversary of the Ryder Trauma Center (USA) and the 20th Anniversary of the Hospital do Trabalhador (Brazil).
