Nom Nom Paleo is a visual feast, crackling with humor and packed with stunningly photographed step-by-step recipes free of gluten, soy, and added sugar. Designed to inspire the whole family to chow down on healthy, home-cooked meals, this cookbook compiles over 100 foolproof paleo recipes that demonstrate how fun and flavorful cooking with wholesome ingredients can be. And did we mention the cartoons? Nom Nom Paleo kicks off with a fresh introduction to Paleo eating, taking readers on a guided tour of author Michelle Tam's real-food strategies for stocking the kitchen, saving time, and maximizing flavors while maintaining a Paleo lifestyle. Also, sprinkled throughout the book are enlightening features on feeding kids, packing nutritious lunches, boosting umami, and much more. The heart of this book are Michelle's award-winning primal Paleo recipes, 50 percent of which are brand-new --- even to diehard fans who own her bestselling iPad cookbook app. Readers can start by marrying their favorite ingredients with building blocks like Sriracha Mayonnaise, Louisiana Remoulade, and the infamous Magic Mushroom Powder. These basic recipes lay the foundation for many of the fabulous delights in the rest of the book including Eggplant "Ricotta" Stacks, Crab Louie, and Devils on Horseback. There's something for everyone in this cookbook, from small bites like Apple Chips and Kabalagala (Ugandan plantain fritters) to family-sized platters of Coconut Pineapple "Rice" and Siu Yoke (crispy roast pork belly). Crave exotic spices? You won't be able to resist the fragrant aromas of Fast Pho or Mulligatawny Soup. In the mood for down-home comforts? Make some Yankee Pot Roast or Chicken Nuggets drizzled with Lemon Honey Sauce. When a quick weeknight meal is in order, Nom Nom Paleo can show you how to make Crispy Smashed Chicken or Whole-Roasted Branzini in less than 30 minutes. And for a cold treat on a hot day, nothing beats Paleo-diet-friendly Mocha Popsicles or a two-minute Strawberry Banana Ice Cream. Eating healthy doesn't mean sacrificing flavor. This book gives you "Paleo with personality," and will make you excited to play in the kitchen again.

Book excerpt: What if an animal could resemble a human, sometimes even more than a real human? Duck Light is the story of Lulu and Rosie: two ducks in love. And, quite frankly, they are bored with life as ducks. The pair are recently engaged and live their lives together in a way similar to what they observe in humans: cooking from a cookbook, watching television, sleeping in a bed, smoking, vaping, drinking, swearing . . . you get the idea. Each chapter is a complete short story, with the stories linked by the pair’s relationship, their impending migration, and their pesky next door neighbours: the scary and mean man on the right, and to the left, Margaret the crazed squirrel. The book opens with Lulu in the bathtub, savouring a cigarette to the sounds of Offenbach. As the chapters progress, winter is on its way, so all the ducks, including Lulu and Rosie, will have to fly south for the cold season. 'Down South' is their eventual winter destination, and also the setting for the couple’s upcoming nuptials. The book ends with the zany pair being wed in a virtually perfect beach ceremony attended by their migratory pals. It seems as though Lulu and Rosie are basically humans, and not ducks at all! Does their near-human lifestyle exist only in their imaginations, or are they truly as sophisticated as they believe? Through the two feathered protagonists endowed with human characteristics, such as Lulu’s tendency to be a people-pleaser, and Rosie’s mean streak, this humorous work contemplates a serious question: How can one break free of societal expectations?

Book excerpt: Advances in network connectivity, power consumption, and physical size create new possibilities for using interactive computing outdoors. However, moving computing outdoors can drastically change the human outdoor experience. This impact is felt in many kinds of outdoor activities such as citizen science, personal recreation, search and rescue, informal education, and others. It is also felt across outdoor settings that range from remote wilderness to crowded cities. Understanding these effects can lead to ideas, designs and systems that improve, rather than diminish, outdoor experiences. This book represents the current results emerging from recent workshops focused on HCI outdoors and held in conjunction with CHI, GROUP, UbiComp, and MobileHCI conferences. Based on feedback at those workshops, and outreach to other leaders in the field, the chapters collected were crafted to highlight methods and approaches for understanding how technologies such as handhelds, wearables, and installed standalone devices impact individuals, groups, and even communities. These findings frame new ways of thinking about HCI outdoors, explore logistical issues associated with moving computing outdoors, and probe new experiences created by involving computing in outdoor pursuits. Also important are the ways that social media has influenced preparation, experience, and reflection related to outdoor experiences. HCI Outdoors: Theory, Design, Methods and Applications is of interest to HCI researchers, HCI practitioners, and outdoor enthusiasts who want to shape future understanding and current practice related to technology in every kind of outdoor experience.

Book excerpt: Throughout our marriage of 50 plus years, one thing that we have consistently agreed upon is the inclusion of animals in our lives. The remembrances in this book recall stories of some of the dogs, cats, horses and other animals that have shared their time and space with our family. Often relationships with these amazing animals brought us joy, at times they brought a bit of sadness but always we were enriched in some way. The many lessons we learned helped us to care for future animals and to open our hearts and minds to what they had to teach us. As we explored our memories, and gathered our pictures, one animal story led to the recollection of another, then another. The remembering brought laughter, gratitude, a sense of wonder and sometimes tears. In these pages you will find stories about the uniqueness of many of our animals including Erichs ingenuity, Docs problem-solving skills, K.C.s dedication and Buddys impeccable training. We hope you will see a reflection of you and your animal friends in the telling of these stories. Herb and Kathy Moore

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norway didn't have many Jews—but it had enough to attract Hitler's attention. It’s 1940 in Norway, and one Jewish family would rather be thinking of anything else. Budding artist Rebekka Davidson sketches the soldiers filling the school and streets, while her cousin Harald Rosenberg learns that he’d rather read about Hitler’s politics than experience them. Talented musician Ingrid Rosenberg prepares to go to her dream school while experiencing the wonders of first love—with the nephew of the leader of the local Nazis. Together, the family will do whatever it takes to return to normal life…but will it be enough? By the end of the war, Norway had lost a higher percentage of its Jews than almost any other country in Europe. This story, inspired by the author’s own experience growing up Jewish in 1940s Norway, brings readers both young and old into the touching struggles of one incredible family. Norway wasn’t too small for Hitler, and for some families, it was everything.

It gives Zoe Penney nightmares about her home—seated right next to tinder-dry woods—rising up in explosions of fire, as well as haunting dreams of a little boy deep in the forest. Winter brings the longed-for rains but also a cancer diagnosis for Zoe’s husband, Jay, which plunges the family into disbelief and fear. The children lean in close to their parents, can’t stop touching them. As Jay’s treatment begins, nature lets loose with strange and startling encounters, while a shadowy figure hovers about the corners of the house. First, Zoe’s fear turns to anger: How can I love you if I am to lose you? How can I live in joy when the sky is falling? But she gradually learns that it’s possible to love anything, even terrible things—if you can love them for what they are teaching you.
