Book Synopsis The Dragon's Last Gasp by : Woude' Wood
Download or read book The Dragon's Last Gasp written by Woude' Wood and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set during the post-Vietnam war era . the main character survives an inner city environment plagued with alcoholism and poverty. He is a quiet, educated, street wise recovering heroin addict who decides to move to stately Lakewood Ohio. It is a small reserved town, mostly composed of white burgher-types. It is integrated with blacks and some immigrants who are, for the most part, peaceable. Peace, though, had eluded the big city nearby in recent months. During this time the city lies in the grip of a serial murderers rampage against young women. The Dragons Last Gasp opens up on Clevelands streets, Woude Woods first novel, where you ride shotgun on a classy American suspense/detective fiction. Woods hero, Paul Long drives a classic vintage Fleetwood as he canvasses Clevelands inner city following the terrifying trail inside the killers stomping grounds. He and a childhood friend are determined to find out what happened to someone named Marcie --- one of the killers victims. She is tied to his own history of psychological and emotional experimentation with drugs and addiction-a hard, unforgiving bondage. Woods narrative is as sleek as the automobile Paul drives. The story reaches a stirring emotional level as Longs own inner struggle and the demons from his past are revealed.. He rubs elbows with street pharmacists, with local cops, with the night and its constituents searching for clues and tracking leads in the ghetto, stalking a killer who seems uncannily familiar. In addition, Wood manages to touch a raw nerve with his startlingly clear portrayals of the people living in the street. Chasing the Dragon will affect the reader profoundly. Wood builds up suspense and grit. His pictures of the cityscapes create a sense of forboding, preparing a surprising, unexpected and explosive showdown. The Dragons Last Gasp cycles through the classic icons of detective fiction with a deft touch. There is a fascinating blend of machismo coupled with deep-thinking. The heart of its hero is hypnotic, yet his presence is fundamentally sound and assuring in the night. The book thus succeeds not only in coming to grips with the Dragon, it brings justice home as secrets are exposed in the finale make it unmistakeably clear that this is indeed the Dragons last Gasp!

Book Synopsis Dealing with the Dragon by : Jonathan Fenby
Download or read book Dealing with the Dragon written by Jonathan Fenby and published by Arcade Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dealing with the Dragon presents a fact-filled but always entertaining account - week-by-week, often day-by-day - of Hong Kong in the last year of the millenium, focusing on the crucial political, legal, and human battles that followed Britain's departure. Predictions by some that this Far Eastern center of commerce and finance would be radically changed by its new rulers have proved largely unfounded; forecasts of tanks in the streets, violent clashes, and the disappearance of democracy were unrealistically dire. Fenby, a journalist with an eyewitness's knowledge of the teeming metropolis and the mainland, shows what actually occurred following the Chinese takeover, detailing major developments - such as Beijing's harsh policies over Taiwan and the outlawed spiritual group Falun Gong - to which foreign governments, including Washington, have preferred to shut their eyes."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Return Of The Dragon by : Maria H Chang
Download or read book Return Of The Dragon written by Maria H Chang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Maoism recedes, and especially after the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, Beijing has increasingly turned to patriotic nationalism for its ideological inspiration and legitimation. Return of the Dragon begins with a discussion of the definitions, typologies, and theories of nationalism. The formation and development of the Chinese people are explored, including their myths of origins, early beginnings, the classical feudal period, and the enduring state and empire of the Middle Kingdom. The Opium War began the ?hundred years of humiliation? when dynastic China steadily deteriorated and eventually succumbed to the forces unleashed by imperialism. Western and Japanese imperialism also transformed the Chinese from a people into a nation. The ideas of early Chinese nationalists are explored, particularly those of Sun Yat-sen, whose thought stands in stark contrast to those of Mao, but shares significant similarities with the developmental nationalism of Deng Xiaoping. The last chapters of Return of the Dragon describe contemporary China's patriotic nationalism as it is represented in the writings of Chinese intellectuals, the youth, and the military. The portrait that emerges is a disquieting mix of narcissism and insecurity, wounded pride and resentment, a Darwinian worldview and an irredentist resolve to restore China to its former glory. The book concludes with an examination of the Chinese polity that remains authoritarian, as well as U.S. policy implications.
