Book excerpt: For supersonic speeds, the drag of circular cylinders is largely independent of fineness ratio and Reynolds numbers. At subsonic Mach numbers, the drag of finite-length cylinders (fineness ratios of about 60 and below) increases as their fineness ratios increase.

Book Synopsis Investigation of Lateral Control Near the Stall by : Fred E. Weick
Download or read book Investigation of Lateral Control Near the Stall written by Fred E. Weick and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flight tests were made with a typical light airplane to investigate possibilities for obtaining reliable control at low flight speeds. It was found that satisfactory lateral control occurred consistently, even under conditions simulating extremely gusty air, at angles of attack approximately 2 degrees below that for the maximum lift coefficient (or the stall of the wing as a whole). This 2 degree margine was substantially the same both with full power and with the engine throttled and throughout the range of center-of-gravity locations tested. Supplementary tests were then made on the control at high angles of attack under actual gusty air conditions, on the possibility of entering spins, and on the amount of elevator control required for normal three-point landings. It was found that with the original plain untwisted wing obtaining the constant 2 degree margin below the stall required widely different elevator deflections for the range of power and center-of-gravity locations tested. Also, none of these settings ws high enough to produce a three-point landing.

This book was released on 1955 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the results of an analysis of approximately 100,000 hours of V-G data from one type of four-engine civil transport airplane to determine the magnitude and frequency of occurrence of the gust loads and gusts. The data were obtained during routine operations from 1947 to 1954 on five different routes. The normal accelerations for each of the five operations may be expected to exceed the value corresponding to the limit-gust-load-factor increment, on the average, twice (once positive and once negative) within the range of 5,000,000 to 22,300,000 flight miles. A derived gust velocity of 50 feet per second was exceeded twice within the range of 600,000 to 1,900,000 flight miles. The gust loads of the present operations were less than the loads experienced by other four-engine civil transports previously investigated, but the differences are not significant. The present data indicated only small differences due to seasonal effects and different operational utilization.

Book Synopsis Effects of Fineness Ratio and Reynolds Number on the Low-Speed Crosswind Drag Characteristics of Circular and Modified-Square Cylinders by : Linwood W. McKinney

McKinney and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation has been made on modified-square and circular cylinders to determine the effects of fineness ratio and Reynolds numbers on the crosswind drag characteristics. Fineness ratios from 2 to 14 were investigated over a Reynolds number range from approximately 300,000 to 1,650,000 which corresponded to Mach numbers from 0.057 to 0.377.The result of the investigation show that at supercraft Reynolds numbers the drag coefficient of the circular cylinder increases with increasing Reynolds number for all fineness ratios but at low fineness ratios this effect is considerably less than at higher fineness ratios. For circular cylinders in the high fineness-ratio range there is a reduction in drag as the fineness ratio is decreased except for Reynolds numbers of 900,000 and 1,000,000, whereas at low fineness ratios the opposite trend generally occurs. The addition of hemispherical ends to the circular cylinder gave a substantial decrease in drag at a fineness ratio of 3.27 but the effect was negligible at fineness ratios of 5.27 and 10. The finite-length modified-square cylinder gave the reduction in drag over the two-dimensional modified-square cylinder for the complete range of test Reynolds numbers with the lowest fineness ratio giving the lowest drag at Reynolds numbers above 3O0,OOO.
