Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On reading your letters, my feelings were, in many ways, deeply moved, and I could not refrain from tears. For I both wept for joy because I could perceive from the very language of your letters, that you were living according to the precepts of the Lord God, and out of my exceeding desire after you, I could not help lamenting that, without any fault on my part, I was parted from you; and I would have felt this still more strongly had you not sent me a letter. Should I not, then, enjoy the company of such a sister? But I call your salvation to witness, that I have very often wished to come to you, but have up till now been prevented, through the opposition of him who is accustomed to hinder us. For, in my eager desire, I was both urgent to satisfy my wishes by seeing you; and we seemed, if we should meet, likely to accomplish more effectually the work of the Lord, since by comforting one another we should live with the heavy load of this world trodden under our feet.

Book Synopsis Jeremiah 48 as Christian Scripture by : Julie Woods
Download or read book Jeremiah 48 as Christian Scripture written by Julie Woods and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An insightful contribution to Old Testament studies, showing how the seemingly bloodthirsty oracle of Jeremiah 48 nevertheless contains a positive Christian reading. In this sophisticated study Julie Woods identifies some salient features of Jeremiah's Moab oracle by means of a careful analysis and comparison of both the Septuagint and the Masoretic Text of Jeremiah 48. She also explores the implications of links between the Moab oracles in Jeremiah 48 and Isaiah 15-16. The focus then moves to theological hermeneutics via an examination of some recent Christian interpretations of the oracle (from Walter Brueggemann, Ronald Clements, Terence Fretheim, Douglas Jones, and Patrick Miller). Building on the observations of these scholars and the conclusions reached from her own textual analyses, Woods provides an innovative Christian reading of the oracle (including two imaginative film scripts to bring the text to life). Perhaps one of the more surprising proposals is that Easter is theultimate horizon of Jeremiah 48.

Book Synopsis Praying the Language of Enmity in the Psalter by : Aran J. E. Persaud
Download or read book Praying the Language of Enmity in the Psalter written by Aran J. E. Persaud and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it possible to hold a New Testament ethic to love one's enemies and pray for their physical infliction, shame, death, and suffering of family members? And yet, the Psalter, the prayer book of the Church, contains such prayers. In modern times, the Church has adopted a semi-Marcionite attitude towards these troubling texts, excluding whole psalms or parts from liturgies and private use. But as the age of "terror" dawns upon us, we are finding that these texts speak of unchanging realities that perhaps the ancients were abler to understand than moderns. Two great wars and a multitude of ideologies proved in the last century that the intellect cannot prevent these irrational impulses of destruction, and post-modern societies, of the present century, with their multitude of voices really offer no voice to counter moral evil. This study of six psalms with graphic language of enmity seeks to help the reader overcome shallow views of the mystery of evil, cultural blinkers of the use of language, and even personal prejudices. It attempts to recover the complete prayer book of the Church, as it once was, Israel's prayer book.

Download or read book Julian von Aeclanum written by Josef Lössl and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julian of Aeclanum )ca. 380-441/55 AD) is one of the most exciting figures of 4th/5th century Latin Christianity. Some of the most influential people in the western Church were among his relatives and friends. As a bishop he became famous for his charity and learning. In 418 AD he was deposed for refusing to endorse the condemnation of Pelagius and Caelestius. In a series of writings, mostly against Augustine, he justified his step and clarified his stance. He also rallied political support, not only in Italy, but also in the east. This book tells the story of his life and discusses questions concerning his literary pursuits, philosophy, biblical exegesis and church political activities. It thus throws light not only on Julian as an individual, but on the history and culture of his age.

Book excerpt: When I and a Gallic friend had assembled in one place, this Gaul being a man very dear to me, both on account of his remembrance of Martin (for he had been one of his disciples), and on account of his own merits, my friend Postumianus joined us. He had just, on my account, returned from the East, to which, leaving his native country, he had gone three years before. Having embraced this most affectionate friend, and kissed both his knees and his feet, we were for a moment or two, as it were, astounded; and, shedding mutual tears of joy, we walked about a good deal.

Download or read book Sacred History written by J.R. Emry and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-08-17 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rescued from being a lost book, this history's last manuscript lay deep within the Vatican Archives, this classic historical text is now, for the first time, being published for the modern reader. Sulpicius Severus is best known for his biography of St. Martin of Tours and his Sacred History (also known as the Chronicle.) Sacred History is a brief history of the world from the beginning to his own time and in the latter portions focuses on the Priscillianist heresy that disordered his home province of Aquitaina which is in modern day France, as well as the Arian controversy. Severus prefers a purely historical interpretation of the scriptures in reaction to the gnostic philosophy that entrenched his region that reduced the sacred history to mere allegory. The Sacred History is written in classic style, such as what is found in Tacitus, and is intended to introduce lovers of history to the histories of the Bible.
