Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first serious analysis of the doctrine of the Trinity for many years, presents a defense against the conservative treatment of the Trinity as an impenetrable "mystery," and against the radical position that the doctrine is incoherent and therefore unacceptable. Brown favors "the founding of a new discipline of philosophical theology (or the widening of the horizons of the philosophy of religion) to apply more widely the type of penetration of theology by philosophy" that he exemplifies in his treatment of the Trinity. He argues for belief in an interventionist God (theism rather than deism), and contends that biblical criticism and historical research do not imply the abandonment of Christian belief, since "the historical original" should not be equated with "theological truth." Although historical difficulties must prevent any literal acceptance of the Gospel accounts in toto, "the true Christ" can be disentangled from "the historical Jesus" by philosophical method. Wide-ranging in scope, rigorous and candid in argument, Brown's work will prove of interest to educated Christian laypersons and others beyond the boundaries of professional theology and philosophy of religion. Perhaps most provocative is Brown's assertion that the Resurrection must be accepted as a literally true visionary experience, and that anyone who accepts it must be prepared to take seriously other visionary experiences, for example, visions of the Virgin Mary, even if he rejects them in the end. "It is certainly an astonishing truth that God should be so interested in a being of such vastly inferior powers as man," says the author. "But that clearly must be the implication of the doctrine of the Trinity . . ." To have reached this conclusion by means of philosophical argument is to have taken a major step toward the "complete penetration of theology by philosophy" that Brown calls for.

Book excerpt: ÒA primary condition for fresh thinking on the Trinity is an accurate, objective account of past and present thoughtÓ wrote one reviewer when The Triune God first appeared in 1972. ÒThis [is what] Fortman has presented sensitively, accurately, and compactly.Ó The author sets out Òto trace the historical development of Trinitarian doctrine from its written beginnings to its contemporary status.Ó Thus he treats the biblical witness, the Council of Nicea, Augustine, the Middle Ages, and the development of this doctrine from the fifteenth century to the present in the Protestant, Orthodox, and Catholic traditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of the Trinity was settled in the fourth century, and maintained, with only very minor disagreement or development, by all strands of the church--Western and Eastern, Protestant and Catholic--until the modern period. In the twentieth century, there arose a sense that the doctrine had been neglected and stood in need of recovery. In The Quest for the Trinity, Holmes takes us on a remarkable journey through 2,000 years of the Christian doctrine of God. We witness the church s discovery of the Trinity from the biblical testimony, its crucial patristic developments, and medieval and Reformation continuity. We are also confronted with the questioning of traditional dogma during the Enlightenment, and asked to consider anew the character of the modern Trinitarian revival. Holmes s controversial conclusion is that the explosion of theological work in recent decades claiming to recapture the heart of Christian theology in fact deeply misunderstands and misappropriates the traditional doctrine of the Trinity. Yet his aim is constructive: to grasp the wisdom of the past and, ultimately, to bring a clearer understanding of the meaning of the present.

Book excerpt: Drawing upon a decade of research and a background in Literature, Linguistics, Biblical Studies, Reformed Theology and the History of Philosophy, Dougherty seeks to uncover the biblical doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Dougherty considers the doctrine from a biblical perspective, from a historic perspective, and from a philosophical perspective, drawing upon such thinkers as Augustine, Aquinas, Calvin, Owen, Edwards, and Cornelius Van Til.While Dougherty challenges many contemporary and historic assumptions about the famous Christian doctrine, contrasting his position on many points with those of contemporary authors such as Robert Letham and John S. Feinberg, his conclusions are in line with the spirit of traditional orthodoxy: He writes, "The Father is wholly God, the Son is wholly God, the Spirit is wholly God. There is no God apart from or in addition to Father, Son and Holy Spirit."

Taking the late twentieth century revival of the doctrine of the Trinity as a context, doctrine from the biblical text to the present day. Book excerpt: This book surveys the ways analytic theologians have sought to understand the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. Applying the tools of recent analytic metaphysics, logic, and epistemology, they seek to provide a self-consistent and orthodox way to understand the trinitarian claims of catholic traditions. This issue goes to the heart of Christian belief, and is central to theological disagreements between Christians, Jews, and Muslims.Supplementary discussions survey the history of Trinity theories, unitarian Christian theologies, and Judaic and Islamic objections to Trinity theories. There is an extensive bibliography. This book is an authorized reprint of the article "Trinity" and its supplementary documents, from the online Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. http://plato.stanford.edu/
