This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new approach to explaining the existence of firms and markets, focusing on variability and coordination. It stands in contrast to the emphasis on transaction costs, and on monitoring and incentive structures, which are prominent in most of the modern literature in this field. This approach, called the variability approach, allows us to: show why both the need for communication and the coordination costs increase when the division of labor increases; explain why, while the firm relies on direction, the market does not; rigorously formulate the optimum divisionalization problem; better understand the relationship between technology and organization; show why the `size' of the firm is limited; and to refine the analysis of whether the existence of a sharable input, or the presence of an external effect leads to the emergence of a firm. The book provides a wealth of insights for students and professionals in economics, business, law and organization.

Book Synopsis Knowledge, Scale and Transactions in the Theory of the Firm by : Mario Morroni
Download or read book Knowledge, Scale and Transactions in the Theory of the Firm written by Mario Morroni and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firms in market economies vary enormously in size, nature and competitiveness. In this important contribution to the literature on the theory of the firm, Mario Morroni provides a fresh analytical framework which improves our understanding of the causes of this diversity in organisational design and performance. The relations between internal and external basic conditions, decision-making mechanisms and organisational co-ordination are addressed, as are the circumstances in which capabilities, transactions and scale-scope considerations interact. With the emergence of the knowledge-based economy and the increasing pressure of global competition, the development of capabilities is acquiring ever greater importance in boosting competitiveness. Morroni shows that long-term relational agreements enhance learning processes and offer powerful tools for improving competitiveness in a context of conflicting interests, incomplete knowledge and uncertainty.
Book Synopsis The Division of Labor in Society by : Émile Durkheim
Download or read book The Division of Labor in Society written by Émile Durkheim and published by Digireads.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: mile Durkheim is often referred to as the father of sociology. Along with Karl Marx and Max Weber he was a principal architect of modern social science and whose contribution helped established it as an academic discipline. "The Division of Labor in Society," published in 1893, was his first major contribution to the field and arguably one his most important. In this work Durkheim discusses the construction of social order in modern societies, which he argues arises out of two essential forms of solidarity, mechanical and organic. Durkheim further examines how this social order has changed over time from more primitive societies to advanced industrial ones. Unlike Marx, Durkheim does not argue that class conflict is inherent to the modern Capitalistic society. The division of labor is an essential component to the practice of the modern capitalistic system due to the increased economic efficiency that can arise out of specialization; however Durkheim acknowledges that increased specialization does not serve all interests equally well. This important and foundational work is a must read for all students of sociology and economic philosophy.

The contributors, all specialists in their field, highlight the emerging conflicts between the users and the providers of industrial premises; conflicts that may undermine economic potential. The need for flexibility in the use and provision of industrial premises is explored in three contexts: the transformation of the urban fringe; the development of hi-tech premises; and the redevelopment of old or derelict premises.
