Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the summer of 1969-the summer Americans first walked on the moon-musician and poet Patti Smith recalled strolling down the Coney Island Boardwalk to a refreshment stand, where "pictures of Jesus, President Kennedy, and the astronauts were taped to the wall behind the register." Such was the zeitgeist in the year of the moon. Yet this holy trinity of 1960s America would quickly fall apart. Although Jesus and John F. Kennedy remained iconic, by the time the Apollo Program came to a premature end just three years later few Americans mourned its passing. Why did support for the space program decrease so sharply by the early 1970s? Rooted in profound scientific and technological leaps, rational technocratic management, and an ambitious view of the universe as a realm susceptible to human mastery, the Apollo moon landings were the grandest manifestation of postwar American progress and seemed to prove that the United States could accomplish anything to which it committed its energies and resources. To the great dismay of its many proponents, however, NASA found the ground shifting beneath its feet as a fierce wave of anti-rationalism arose throughout American society, fostering a cultural environment in which growing numbers of Americans began to contest rather than embrace the rationalist values and vision of progress that Apollo embodied. Shifting the conversation of Apollo from its Cold War origins to larger trends in American culture and society, and probing an eclectic mix of voices from the era, including intellectuals, religious leaders, rock musicians, politicians, and a variety of everyday Americans, Matthew Tribbe paints an electrifying portrait of a nation in the midst of questioning the very values that had guided it through the postwar years as it began to develop new conceptions of progress that had little to do with blasting ever more men to the moon. No Requiem for the Space Age offers a narrative of the 1960s and 1970s unlike any told before, with the story of Apollo as the story of America itself in a time of dramatic cultural change.

Book excerpt: Greek and Roman tales of deities and demigods, what we call myths, are twisted versions of true history: Zeus is Satan, the Titans are the sons of god who came in to the daughters of man, and the heroes of the Golden Age are the mighty men of old-the Nephilim. If you were brought up in church, there's a good chance you were taught that the pagan gods were imaginary. But God Himself calls them gods. Not only that, He's judged them, found them wanting, and proclaimed a sentence of death on these rebels. But they're not dead yet. They're angry, and they're coming back.In Last Clash of the Titans, you'll discover:¿The Titans, the old gods of the Greeks, are the Watchers, the angelic sons of God who created the monstrous Nephilim by taking human women as wives¿The Nephilim, later called Rephaim, were the heroes and demigods of the Greeks¿Satan is lord of the Rephaim-and he'll lead them in an end times army against Israel¿The pagan Amorites worshiped the Rephaim spirits and believed they were ancestors of their kings¿The pagan prophet Balaam foretold the final destruction of the Nephilim by the Messiah¿Ezekiel's prophecy of Gog and Magog tells us when and where they'll be destroyed¿Gog won't be human, Magog is not Russia, and their war ends with the Battle of Armageddon¿The spirit of primordial chaos, Leviathan, will return from the abyss-as the AntichristAs Baudelaire wrote, "The finest trick of the devil is to persuade you that he does not exist." Recent research shows that nearly 60% of American Christians have fallen for that lie.Zeus, Hercules, the Olympians, and the Titans are real. They hate us, they want to kill us, and they're coming back.Get ready.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book explores the representation of Helen of Troy in Hollywood film and television, with a particular focus on her defining features: transcendent beauty and transgressive erotic agency. The first chapter, on early Hollywood, sets the scene by explaining the importance of ideas about Greek beauty at the beginning of cinema and highlighting some of the problems that continue to bedevil this topic, especially "realism" and the representation of supreme beauty. Blondell argues that the problem of Helen is baked into Hollywood from the start. In subsequent chapters Blondell examines specific screen adaptations in which Helen is featured. Each of these case studies locates a particular work in its historical, cultural, and generic context, as a framework for addressing the ways in which it approaches a range of interlocking questions about beauty, its representation, and the cinematic uses of myth. The second chapter is devoted to the sole Helenic feature film of the silent period, Alexander Korda's Private Life of Helen of Troy (1927). Part II moves to the big screen epic, pairing one film from each of the two great waves of ancient world epic spanning the latter half of the 20th century: Robert Wise's 1956 epic Helen of Troy and Wolfgang Petersen's more recent extravaganza, Troy (2004). In Part III she turns to television, with a chapter on episodic tele-fantasy followed by a study of the 2003 miniseries Helen of Troy. In some of these works Helen is the central character (or "hero"); in others she is at the periphery of a masculine adventure. But in all of them she represents the threat of superhuman beauty as an inheritance from classical Greece"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our world is alive with fascinating new ideas, discoveries, and technologies. But for Christians this can also present problems-especially when the values of postmodernism and secular university life conflict with basic Christian principles. What should Christians do when their beliefs come under attack in the classroom or the public square? Loving God with All Your Mind shows us that the answer is neither wholesale rejection of intellectual life and culture, nor blind acceptance of it. The answer lies in understanding that Jesus is Lord of all of life and that everything in life must be carefully viewed in the light of what Christ's lordship means. Gene Edward Veith unfolds a dazzling critique of the postmodern intellectual world and culture. He affirms the part that is good and true, but he also shows crucial weaknesses that have such a hold over contemporary thought. This book shows Christians how to survive and flourish in a postmodern world while affirming the truth of the Christian faith.
