The present volume compares the development of liberalism in both countries - which took place under quite different conditions and without much mutual interaction - from the early beginnings in the nineteenth century down to the twenty-first century. It tries to explain why Dutch liberals are nowadays doing better than their German counterparts.

Book excerpt: This book documents the wide range of contemporary communes and other intentional communities providing sanctuaries for like-minded people to pursue cooperative alternatives to media-stoked consumerism and the relentless tempo of change that characterizes mainstream life in 21st-century America and Europe. Common Purse, Uncommon Future: The Long, Strange Trip of Communes and Other Intentional Communities explores the many new types of communal living being tried in America and Europe today. A growing number of people disenchanted with the pressures and demands of mainstream lifestyles are drawn by the nostalgic appeal of traditional, mostly agrarian and artisanal, lifestyles as practiced in residential communities where liminal rituals of membership serve to validate pacts to live and work together in cooperative social and economic relations. Manzella focuses on the ways in which today's most innovative and controversial ecovillages diverge from the hippie communes of yesteryear's counterculture and from older communal forms such as kibbutzim and arts and crafts colonies, and how today's nonsectarian spiritual and volunteer service communities differ from traditional religious communes and ashrams. He reports his field investigations of a whole new generation of communal living experiments, such as residential land trusts, survivalist retreats, urban cohousing, green housing cooperatives, student co-ops, and New Age organic agrarian communes.

Book excerpt: A story of contemporary Chile by one of its most prominent novelists, An Empty House depicts the dissolution of an upper-middle-class family against a chilling background of exile, return, and discovery. The stark and moving narrative suggests the enormity of the horrors perpetrated in Chile over the last decades, horrors that resonate through the culture to this day. Cecilia and Manuel accept her father?s gift of a house, in hope of repairing their unraveling marriage along with the badly scarred building. Instead, the couple?s efforts expose the horrifying truth about the building?and reveal the subtle strands of complicity, responsibility, and indifference that bind them to each other, their country, and its dark past. ø With its deftly drawn characters, play of ideas, and vivid dialogue, An Empty House gives English-speaking readers a memorable portrait of Chile today: honest, brutally realistic, but with a redemptive touch of lyricism and hope.

There are two basic starting points from which to answer that question. One is premised on ideas of rational choice and intentionality, while the other is a process of evolutionary dynamics. Both are well-defined and operate as powerful intellectual attractors. Using the ideas of Gregor Mendel as a useful touchstone, this book aims to construct a middle-ground between these two conceptions. The image of the "Mendelian" executive shows how we might effectively balance the ideas of godlike rational design on the one hand and evolutionary dynamics on the other. The perspective developed in this book is anchored on the two key primitives of path-dependence and artificial selection. The intentionality of the Mendelian executive allows for the conscious exploration of opportunities, rather than the happenstance of random variants, yet the constraining forces of path-dependence may lead these moves to adjacent spaces. This perspective also highlights the role of intentionality with respect to the selection and culling of strategic initiatives. The organization operates an “artificial selection” environment, as firms receive profits and losses and, in turn, mediate how these environmental outcomes are projected onto underlying elements and actors within the organization. In this spirit, exploration can be considered not merely as the distance in the underlying behavior from current action, but also as changes in the dimensions of merit by which initiatives are judged. The Mendelian executive is a catalyst and cultivator of promising pathways to unknown futures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the final day of the 2002 / 2003 football season Chelsea Football Club recorded a famous 2-1 victory over Liverpool, thereby qualifying to play in the following seasons European Champions League competition. Resigned to losing Gianfranco Zola, who had recently been voted the club's greatest ever player, and with no money available for Chelsea's charismatic coach Claudio Ranieri to strengthen the squad, the prospects for the coming season looked to be self-limiting. That had been the general consensus of Marco, Young Dave, Ugly John, Ossie and the rest of the Chelsea Gate 17 boys as they frittered away the summer months waiting for the new European campaign to begin. Enter Roman Abramovich. The billionaire Russian oligarch purchased the club and financed a spending spree unprecedented in the history of the game. 'Glorious unpredictability,' that's what Marco called it ...that Chelsea factor, you just never knew what was going to happen next. Whatever it was, the Gate 17 boys had no intention of missing any of it ...they'd even planned to make a spiritual pilgrimage to Sardinia to watch their hero Zola. Over Land and Sea re-writes the current trend in depressingly violent football literature.
