Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Distillation of Stumpwood and Logging Waste of Western Yellow Pine In the beginning the stumps were arbitrarily classed as rich when the top showed a marked resinous exudation, or, if burned over, revealed decidedly resinous wood when out into with an axe, as medium when it showed but little of such exudation, and as poor when, although apparently sound, it was devoid of any resinous exudation. All stumps containing little if any resinous wood are classed as bull pine, despite the fact that this term is usually limited to the western yellow pine less than 24 inches across the stump. Selected stumps of each class were removed by blasting, and only enough of their heartwood was taken to make, with wood from other stumps of the same quality, a cord sample of that class. This cord, or a smaller sample selected from this measured cord, was then shipped to Moscow for the experimental work. Download or read book Transport Processes in Wood written by J.F. Siau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has a similar subject content to the author's previous Flow in Wood but with substantial updating due to the abundance of research in the wood science field since 1971. Several different concepts have been introduced, particularly in regard to wood-moisture relation ships. The role of water potential in the equilibria between wood and its humid and moist environments is considered. Two theories are introduced to explain the nonisothermal transport of bound water in the steady and unsteady states. As in the former text, the wood-. structure relationship is emphasized . . The author is especially grateful to Dr. C. Skaar for his careful and critical review of much of the manuscript and for the productive dis cussions of many of the concepts. Dr. T. E. Timell, the series editor, rendered major assistance in the preparation of Chap. 2 and in his editing of the manuscript. The author wishes to thank Dr. W. A. Cote, Mr. A. C. Day, and Mr. J. J. McKeon for providing electron micro graphs, Mr. G. A. Snyder for his photography of much of the art work, Dr. C. H. de Zeeuw for his advice in the field of wood anatomy, and Ms. Mary M. Siau for her careful rendition of the art work. Apprecia tion is extended to Miss Judy A. Barton and Mrs. Stephanie V. Micale for their work in typing and checking the manuscript. Mr. J. A.

DPC, DPM, FFL) Lists acronyms of common institutions such as the ICE, JCT and ACE Examples of definitions: Modular construction A modern construction method whereby the building is constructed using prefabricated or pre-assembled building sections or modules. The three-dimensional building sections are typically fabricated and assembled in an enclosed factory environment and then delivered to site, ready for installation. Modular construction is aimed at minimising construction time by standardising design components, providing consistent quality and allowing site preparation and building activities to commence concurrently with the construction of the factory-made modules. Snagging The process of formally inspecting the construction works to identify any incomplete works or defects in completed works. A snagging list (or ‘punch list’) is a schedule of defects resulting from this inspection. These items typically need to be rectified prior to the issuing of a completion certificate or handing-over of the works although in some cases a completion certificate will be issued with a snagging list attached.
