The Distance between Hopes and Dreams seeks to bring out the poet and dreamer in all of us. If Dreams Were Keys Thered Be No Locks Door I If dreams were keys thered be no locks, All prisons empty, true love run amok! Fat angels would smile with rifles, and socks: To target the banana-strawberry heart. Door II Without any locks, lions would hunt Like beasts, to pounce, thus reinvent pun, Or breed like citizens for sport, and court: Under the vanilla paper bag sun

Book excerpt: Perception of the Navigator is a collection of poetry, that's entertaining! A fascinating read! This book's about living, bearing witness to time, and seizing one's destiny! Lobaito sets to establish an identity all his own, with such poems as, "Whatever's the Cost for Love I Accept" a romantic villanelle, which he proclaims, "I'll climb a thousand mountains, of a thousand skulls, / Just to reach your fair feet, and kiss your sweet lips!" expressing emotion at its consent. In, "A Painted Emotion" he writes, "Ambition / Has lost her mind / To a drug called knowledge / For the fruits of wisdom / In a dream beyond cypress and sonic ash, / Booming through a field of wild heathers" in a jazz-like state of consciousness. With the poem, "Hope is a Weapon" Lobaito becomes more punctual, with lines, "Hope is a weapon that is used to create destruction, / That is, if you believe in the miracle of life / And justification of death" using pessimism's fatalistic views. And in, "Guiding Principles" he writes, "Thou shall not be oneself in public, / If it requires justice to be correct! ... Be kind to bugs: ants, roaches, / Headlice etc! / You never know if reincarnation's real!" A true poem of satirical wit! Each poem chisels itself onto the page, as if lightning was a mechanical pen to use! Lobaito personifies passion with pizzazz, and grace with conviction! If you never bought a volume of poetry, this is the book to start!

Book excerpt: At the end of a century of unfathomable suffering, societies are facing anew the question of how events that shock, resist assimilation, and evoke contradictory and complex responses should be remembered. Between Hope and Despair specifically examines the pedagogical problem of how remembrance is to proceed when what is to be remembered is underscored by a logic difficult to comprehend and subversive of the humane character of existence. This pedagogical attention to practices of remembrance reflects the growing cognizance that hope for a just and compassionate future lies in the sustained, if troubled, working through of these issues.

Hope is increasingly being acknowledged as an important factor both for people's resilience and for positive therapeutic outcomes. In considering this and many other questions, this evocative textbook introduces the reader to the repeated shifting, or 'dance', between hope and despair that is so often encountered by practitioners working with profoundly traumatised individuals. This book brings a sharp focus to the ways in which therapeutic relationships can draw individuals out of the constant oscillation between light and dark. It provides an insightful and thoughtful discussion not just about despair itself, but about how to be with despair. Informed by the author's own years of experience in the field of psychotherapy, this engaging and stimulating book provides practical guidance on how students, trainees and practitioners can inspire fresh hope in deeply troubled clients.

Seaberg explores through a fictitious story, historical facts and his own ink drawings the architectural development of a special place called Hope Town in the Bahamas. In Part 1 of the book Sarah and The Goat, the reader is brought back to the late 1700s when the Islands of the Bahamas were first settled by Loyalists and relives a way of life that may even be similar to our present day. In Part 2 of the book, Older Houses of Hope Town, the dreams of building a new life are connected with the building of houses that created a community appropriately named Hope Town. The Reality of a Dream has been realized by many in search of a new life in Hope Town from the time it was originally settled until the present. "The tropical setting of swaying palm trees and inspiring blue green waters is like living on the untouched edge of the world." Richard L. Seaberg

Book excerpt: In this inspirational and unflinchingly honest memoir, acclaimed author Reyna Grande describes her childhood torn between the United States and Mexico, and shines a light on the experiences, fears, and hopes of those who choose to make the harrowing journey across the border. Reyna Grande vividly brings to life her tumultuous early years in this “compelling...unvarnished, resonant” (BookPage) story of a childhood spent torn between two parents and two countries. As her parents make the dangerous trek across the Mexican border to “El Otro Lado” (The Other Side) in pursuit of the American dream, Reyna and her siblings are forced into the already overburdened household of their stern grandmother. When their mother at last returns, Reyna prepares for her own journey to “El Otro Lado” to live with the man who has haunted her imagination for years, her long-absent father. Funny, heartbreaking, and lyrical, The Distance Between Us poignantly captures the confusion and contradictions of childhood, reminding us that the joys and sorrows we experience are imprinted on the heart forever, calling out to us of those places we first called home. Also available in Spanish as La distancia entre nosotros.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to change the world, or at least some part of it? Mountain Majesty: The History of CODEP Haiti Where Sustainable Agricultural Development Works takes an in-depth look at a unique organization that has improved the lives of thousands of rural Haitians through sustainable agricultural development. Together, Jack and Evelyn Hanna embarked on their dream retirement. They outfitted a boat to cruise the Caribbean islands and planned to do volunteer work where they could. But a chance encounter with a desperate Barbadian woman challenged their assumptions and ultimately changed the course of countless lives from another island in the region. Rural Haitian kids often go hungry. They wear tattered clothing and have no shoes. Many people suffer from malnutrition and severe poverty. Hurricanes, floods, deforestation and soil erosion, coupled with political instability, high unemployment and a lack of infrastructure conspire to prevent them from being able to grow enough food to feed their families. In Haiti's Cormier Valley, Jack saw the terrain - huge patches of completely barren land no trees, huge gullies, no soil incapable of sustaining life, plant or animal - and recognized that the only way to help the people of the Cormier Valley was to address the whole watershed area through sustainable agriculture. CODEP was brought to life by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), working with local Haitians and NGOs. They embarked on an ambitious reforestation and erosion control project to ultimately improve the economic conditions for rural Haitians in the Cormier Valley. Sustainable agricultural development is challenging work, but locals saw first-hand just what it could do for their community. They dug ditches and bolstered mountainsides. They germinated, grew and planted trees. They overcame interference from goats, insects and embargos. They upgraded infrastructure and slowly secured additional land for planting. CODEP has encouraged responsible ecological stewardship and reaping the benefits of long-term rewards. Their project solutions are more attractive than the common practice of cutting down trees for charcoal and some quick cash. As a result, CODEP is one of the more successful agricultural development projects in Haiti, and possibly in the world. Nowadays, beautiful fruit trees grow in the forest shade and the people of Cormier Valley are healthier than ever before. Mountain Majesty: The History of CODEP Haiti Where Sustainable Agricultural Development Works documents this fascinating change from environmental degradation to habitat redemption, where environmental rehabilitation led to the restoration of human dignity. A deeply personal story, Mountain Majesty profiles leaders and participants like the Haitians Edvy and NwÈl and project architects Jack and Rodney, exploring their lives, motivations and actions. It also addresses the management issues that non-profits and church mission projects often face. How can we really help the people we want to help? How do we secure more funding? How do we ensure stakeholder participation? How can we identify and develop local leaders? How do we adequately set goals and measure progress? How can we keep donors happy? How do we balance competing interests? How do we keep moving forward when the founder leaves? How do we ensure sustainability? These are some of the questions that keep nonprofits awake at night, and some of the lessons offered by this book.

Do you need to find more of His peace, love, and mercy? Do you want more strength to face the challenges and trials of life and emerge victorious? God is so awesome it is impossible to confine Him to mere words. No two people relate the same way to God, and God is fresh in His dealings with each individual. Yet His character is constant and eternal, the same yesterday, today, and forever. We glean foremost from His Word but also by the insights of others, inspired by the Holy Spirit, to discover His Workings in the lives of mankind. These can be beams of light on our own pathway through life. The first part of this book attempts to capture a fragment of Who God is in poetry and verse. The second part is stories from the life of the author and her ancestors which proclaim God in every day living. God is to be in every part and aspect of life, and this book relates stories of life's joys, sorrows, heartrending trials, triumphs, and special times with God, as well as the mundane and the funny happenings of living. There are also poems of God's hand in nature outside the author's backdoor. To proclaim God, you must also live God. This book presents not only His Word but also how His Word can be applied to real-life situations and God's faithfulness throughout generations.
