Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dispatches and Letters of Vice Admiral Lord Viscount Nelson, Vol. 1: With Notes Since the publication of the First Volume of this Work, the Editor has been favoured with many communications, which have caused some additional Letters to be inserted in the present Edition. Through the influence of a friend, access has been obtained to the Papers of the late Dr. M'Arthur, which are now in the possession of his daughter, Mrs. Conway; but they contain few original documents relating to Lord Nelson, and scarcely any of the Manuscripts that were used in Clarke and M'Arthur's " Life of Nelson." If no other Papers of Dr. M'Arthur are in existence, the suggestion in the Preface that his family had retained Letters which were lent to him is without foundation; and the Editor, therefore, willingly recalls it. The fact, however remains, that many of the persons who lent original Letters to Dr. M'Arthur, never recovered them. It is therefore possible that they may have been lost. Though the examination of Dr. M'Arthur's Papers was not attended with the expected result, some valuable original Letters, and Copies of a few others, have thereby been obtained. The original Letters were addressed to Lord Hood, during the Sieges of Bastia and Calvi, or to Dr. M'Arthur; and, (together with two Letters from other sources, ) are inserted in their proper places in this Volume. The appointment, of Lord Keith so deeply mortified his feelings, (for he did not expect that any Officer would be placed over him in the Mediterranean, after the retirement of Earl St. Vincent, ) that he determined to return to England, as soon as he had obtained the permission of the Admiralty.
