Book Synopsis Soldiers, Traders, and Slaves by : Janet Ewald
Download or read book Soldiers, Traders, and Slaves written by Janet Ewald and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Nuba Hills, on the frontiers of the Islamic Sudan, a dynasty of Muslim warrior kings arose in the eighteenth century. Their kingdom, Taqali, survived as an independent state, resisting conquest by larger empires, and coming under external control only during the twentieth century. Janet Ewald has written the first comprehensive account of the origins and development of the Taqali kingdom. Ewald shows how events originating far beyond the Taqali massif allowed local Muslim soldiers to become kings of the Taqali in the eighteenth century and then to hold on to their power. But the nature of that power was shaped by the highland farmers who stubbornly and largely successfully resisted the efforts of the kings to parlay their control over the means of production. In this struggle religion became an ideological weapon on both sides, as the Taqali farmers asserted their local beliefs against their Muslim rulers. Political confrontations also bore unintended economic consequences. Ewald's account of Taqali challenges current views on the impact of Islam, merchant capitalism, and Egyptian military administration in nineteenth-century Sudan.

Book Synopsis Dotawo: a Journal of Nubian Studies by : Dotawo Journal
Download or read book Dotawo: a Journal of Nubian Studies written by Dotawo Journal and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2015-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dotawo: A Journal of Nubian Studies offers a multi-disciplinary, diachronic view of all aspects of Nubian civilization. It brings to Nubian studies a new approach to scholarly knowledge: an open-access collaboration with DigitalCommons@Fairfield, an institutional repository of Fairfield University in Connecticut, USA, and open-access publishing house punctum books. The first two volumes of Dotawo have their origins in a Nubian language panel organized by Angelika Jakobi within the Nilo-Saharan Linguistics Colloquium held at the University of Cologne, May 22 to 24, 2013. Since many invited participants from Sudan were unable to get visas due to the shutdown of the German Embassy in Khartoum at that time, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation funded the organization of a second venue of specialists on modern Nubian languages. This so-called "Nubian Panel 2" was hosted by the Institute of African & Asian Studies at the University of Khartoum on September 18 and 19, 2013. This volume publishes the proceedings of that panel.Future volumes will address three more themes: 1) Nubian women; 2) Nubian place names; 3) and know-how and techniques in ancient Sudan. The calls for papers for the first two volumes may be found on the back of this volume. The third volume is already in preparation with the assistance of Marc Maillot of the Section française de la direction des Antiquités du Soudan, Department of Archeology. We welcome proposals for additional themed volumes, and invite individual submissions on any topic relevant to Nubian studies.TABLE OF CONTENTS // Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei, "Old Nubian Relative Clauses" -- Mohamed K. Download or read book Kordofan Invaded written by Stiansen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses economic change, regional politics and Islamisation in Kordofan, a large province in the Sudan. Kordofan's history is characterised by resistance and adaptation to expanding states and market forces causing both sectoral transformation and stagnation. The contributions in different ways examine the interplay between local and invading institutions, and include studies of Kordofan as a terra media between Darfur and Sinnar, international trade in the nineteenth century, the Mahdist revolt, the Anglo-Egyptian Condominium (with particular reference to land tenure and tribal identity), Kordofan in Sudanese nationalist poetry, local politics in the Nuba Mountains and the conflict between religious orthodoxy and local practice. The book will be of interest to scholars of Africa and Islam because of its novel focus on regional institutions and their relation to the state structures. This edited volume explores the history, social structure and economy of Kordofan in the Sudan. Representing several academic disciplines, each chapter is concerned with the long-term incorporation - through invasions - of the region into wider socio-political and economic structures.
Book Synopsis Transnational Transcendence by : Thomas J. Csordas
Download or read book Transnational Transcendence written by Thomas J. Csordas and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative collection examines the transnational movements, effects, and transformations of religion in the contemporary world, offering a fresh perspective on the interrelation between globalization and religion. Transnational Transcendence challenges some widely accepted ideas about this relationship—in particular, that globalization can be understood solely as an economic phenomenon and that its religious manifestations are secondary. The book points out that religion's role remains understudied and undertheorized as an element in debates about globalization, and it raises questions about how and why certain forms of religious practice and intersubjectivity succeed as they cross national and cultural boundaries. Framed by Thomas J. Csordas's introduction, this timely volume both urges further development of a theory of religion and globalization and constitutes an important step toward that theory.

Download or read book Sudan written by Abdel Salam Sidahmed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-11-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stretching between the savannah and the equator, Sudan is a microcosm of Africa, with one leg in the Arab world and the other in Africa. Sudan's development, however, has failed to address the differences within the country between its diverse ethnic communities. This has resulted in political instability and a lack of national consensus, ultimately leading to long-term civil war. This useful book provides a comprehensive introduction to contemporary Sudan, outlining the evolution of the state with emphasis on its post-independence experience. It includes chapters on the history, politics, society, international relations and economy of the country.
Download or read book Civilizing Women written by Janice Boddy and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civilizing Women is a riveting exploration of the disparate worlds of British colonial officers and the Muslim Sudanese they sought to remake into modern imperial subjects. Focusing on efforts to stop female circumcision in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan between 1920 and 1946, Janice Boddy mines colonial documents and popular culture for ethnographic details to interleave with observations from northern Sudan, where women's participation in zâr spirit possession rituals provided an oblique counterpoint to colonial views. Written in engaging prose, Civilizing Women concerns the subtle process of "colonizing selfhood," the British women who undertook it, and those they hoped to reform. It suggests that efforts to suppress female circumcision were tied to the continuation of slavery and the rise of commercial cotton growing in Sudan, as well as to concerns about infant mortality and maternal health. Boddy traces maneuverings among political officers, teachers, missionaries, and medical personnel as they pursued their elusive goal, and describes their fraught relations with Egypt, Parliament, the Foreign Office, African nationalists, and Western feminists. In doing so, she sounds a cautionary note for contemporary interventionists who would flout local knowledge and belief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on fieldwork largely collected during the CPA interim period by Sudanese and European researchers, this volume sheds light on the dynamics of change and the relationship between microscale and macroscale processes which took place in Sudan between the 1980s and the independence of South Sudan in 2011. Contributors’ various disciplinary approaches—socio-anthropological, geographical, political, historical, linguistic—focus on the general issue of “access to resources.” The book analyzes major transformations which affected Sudan in the framework of globalization, including land and urban issues; water management; “new” actors and “new conflicts”; and language, identity, and ideology.
