Book excerpt: The book investigates the theme of Modernism (1920-1960 and its epigones) as an integral part of tangible and intangible cultural heritage which contains the result of a whole range of disciplines whose aim is to identify, document and preserve the memory of the past and the value of the future. Including several chapters, it contains research results relating to cultural heritage, more specifically Modernism, and current digital technologies. This makes it possible to record and evaluate the changes that both undergo: the first one, from a material point of view, the second one from the research point of view, which integrates the traditional approach with an innovative one. The purpose of the publication is to show the most recent studies on the modernist lexicon 100 years after its birth, moving through different fields of cultural heritage: from different forms of art to architecture, from design to engineering, from literature to history, representation and restoration. The book appeals to scholars and professionals who are involved in the process of understanding, reading and comprehension the transformation that the places have undergone within the period under examination. It will certainly foster the international exchange of knowledge that characterized Modernism

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the digital revolution has shaped our language In the age of search, keywords increasingly organize research, teaching, and even thought itself. Inspired by Raymond Williams's 1976 classic Keywords, the timely collection Digital Keywords gathers pointed, provocative short essays on more than two dozen keywords by leading and rising digital media scholars from the areas of anthropology, digital humanities, history, political science, philosophy, religious studies, rhetoric, science and technology studies, and sociology. Digital Keywords examines and critiques the rich lexicon animating the emerging field of digital studies. This collection broadens our understanding of how we talk about the modern world, particularly of the vocabulary at work in information technologies. Contributors scrutinize each keyword independently: for example, the recent pairing of digital and analog is separated, while classic terms such as community, culture, event, memory, and democracy are treated in light of their historical and intellectual importance. Metaphors of the cloud in cloud computing and the mirror in data mirroring combine with recent and radical uses of terms such as information, sharing, gaming, algorithm, and internet to reveal previously hidden insights into contemporary life. Bookended by a critical introduction and a list of over two hundred other digital keywords, these essays provide concise, compelling arguments about our current mediated condition. Digital Keywords delves into what language does in today's information revolution and why it matters.

Trekking between villages in search of clues, the cousins encounter a plague of punctuation, a curious creature, a fog of forgetting, the Mistress of Metaphor, a panel of poets, and the illogical mathematicians of Irrationality. But when a careless Mathemystical reflects them across the border into the ominous Land of Night, their peril deepens. Kidnapped, imprisoned, and mesmerized--with time running out--will Daphne and Ivan find a way to solve the mystery of lights in the sky and restore the lost children of Lexicon to their homes?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Digital Dictionary is a compilation of easy to understand explanations for technical terms, abbreviations and acronyms that are used in our daily lives and on a daily basis. Not all of us know the real meaning when we talk about gigabyte, DSL or cable modems and USB connectors... but most of us wish they would know! Over nine years of research, hundreds of interviews and thousands of computer hours went into writing this book. With The Digital Dictionary the reader will have a simple way of accessing translations for the most common terms and he or she will finally know the real meaning of today's tech-talk. Since this book was written for the most common buzzwords, it can only contain a limited amount of information because our language, our vocabulary and our tech-talk grows every day. Therefore it is not unusual to come across a section in The Digital Dictionary, where the reader might think a word or abbreviation is missing... however... it is not... it was just not "common" enough to be included. The author does not warrant The Digital Dictionary to be error-free. However - this book was compiled by using due diligence and reasonable common sense, but changes, updates and additions may be necessary to reflect new terms or acronyms in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of new lexical units and patterns has been studied in different research frameworks, focusing on either system-internal or system-external aspects, from which no comprehensive view has emerged. The volume aims to fill this gap by studying dynamic processes in the lexicon – understood in a wide sense as not being necessarily limited to the word level – by bringing together approaches directed to morphological productivity as well as approaches analyzing general types of lexical innovation and the role of discourse-related factors. The papers deal with ongoing changes as well as with historical processes of change in different languages and reflect on patterns and specific subtypes of lexical innovation as well as on their external conditions and the speakers’ motivations for innovating. Moreover, the diffusion and conventionalization of innovations will be addressed. In this way, the volume contributes to understanding the complex interplay of structural, cognitive and functional factors in the lexicon as a highly dynamic domain.

Book excerpt: In 1991 publishers Uitgeverij De Buitenkant and Spectatorpers published a small book entitled "Romanée en Trinité: Historisch origineel en systematisch slordig". The author set the Dutch text by hand, using Jan van Krimpen's Romanée, and printed 500 copies on a Victoria platen press. Drukkerij Jan de Jong (Uitgeverij De Buitenkant's in-house press) printed the type specimen section in offset. By 1991 the Autologic phototypesetter had already been phased out, Enschedé having switched to digital typesetting. Fortunately the author was able to use the phototypeset positives for the 1982 type specimen. Enschedé had given Peter Matthias Noordzij the job of digitizing Trinité and in the second half of Romanée en Trinité the author was able to give a foretaste of the results. This book contains the full text of Romanée en Trinité, but it was technically impossible to include the hand-set specimen.
